It doesn't get better than this! The talent assembled here and the music, wow. Thanks for posting. I'd love to find the DVDs for these sessions somewhere!
Judging from the smiles on Dan and Jerry's faces I would say they DO like it when they start going Irish/ Scottish with the flute. The flute has a long tradition in Irish music, and bluegrass derived from Irish/Scottish music.
Dan is from the town right next to mine. It's nice to see a great musician from Vermont making it big. If want to check out another Vermont artist, then check out my channel MrMattRocker. If not just keep watching this Vermont artist do what he does best.
dan is a great musician/writer, they did this song justice-I like it much better than union stations! (jerry missed the chord change at the last) thats alright he picked it up where he was supposed to be!...Great job guys!
I love their expressions. Dan seems happy like a child in a toys shop, while Jerry looks at his dobro all like "What I'm playing is fuckin' amazing"...and yes, he's right...
I can't think of anything to write. I'm dumbfounded by the insane amount of awesomeness I just watched. There's only one criticism I have. How am i supposed to enjoy other music after this?! So FANfreakingTASTIC!!
Isn't this great pawlawlum. Thanks for identifying the flutist. Many years ago I used to play that instrument; it's harder than it looks. The flute is a hollow tube with no reed or back-pressure, so breath control is one of the hardest things. I'm an Irish American with relatives in County Kilkenny, and I love Bluegrass and Celtic, (mostly Irish, actually) music.
@sawtine I'm aware that Bluegrass gets it's roots from the Scots and Irish. I enjoy both music styles very very much. In this particular case i meant the Irish dance 'jig' sounds a little too upbeat in the middle of this song. When i hear AKUS perform this song they play it more slowly...with a sad, sort of melancholic longing to match the lyrics. Perhaps i prefer the slower version because i'm more familiar with it. BTW, I LOVE the TransAtlantic Sessions and could watch 'em all day long!
I get pretty cheesy with music sometimes, but something about the quality of this song and this version brought me to tears. Good god, how proud these guys must be to make something so beautiful together. I wish I could clearly hear what Jerry Douglas said the end. I can't help but think he was impressed with what they just accomplished (eventhough he's done this song many many times before).
@HELPTHEKELP Although I may just be being ignorant and not picking up on the humour but it is actually Dan Tyminski singing in O'Brother Where art thou
the Irish lick starting at 3:35 sounds odd in this song...but i was pleasantly surprised that the flute actually sounds pretty good in a bluegrass song.
@jaksspring97 I couldn't disagree more.. the irish kick was a really nice addition to this song... as it turns out, this song demonstrates how traditional irish music and bluegrass are quite complimentary. That's just my opinion (and the musicians on the take obviously).
@CaraminTim Its actually called a "dobro" or resophonic guitar, not slide guitar. But he has a metal slide in his left hand and picks on his thumb, pointer, and middle fingers on his right hand. His name is Jerry Douglas. Look him up. He's ridiculous.
@KapteinOpel "bluegrass met its grandad".... I don't think it could be put any better. A lot of irish, scots, welsh, and english up in those Appalachian hills... where do people think bluegrass got its roots? One commenter on here even thought the "irish kick" sounded odd with this song... they couldn't be more wrong. I don't think Dan and Jerry could have been more pleased to hear this collaboration of this song. You can see it in their faces while they play. Simply moving.
love this song, but dan and the guys also played a version of Down in the Willow Garden on this episode but the original posters page has been removed. Anyone one know where i can watch it??
Michael McGoldrick on flute, Aly Bain on fiddle, looks like Phil Cunningham has taken to the piano, Jerry Douglas on resonator guitar. To me, it looks like the bassist is Conrad Molleson who played with string sisters, along with James Mackintosh on drums. And of course Dan and a guitarist I cant recognise.
@androssl Todd Parks is the bass player. Apart from that, the rest of the list is correct. The only guitarist on the video, besides Jerry Douglas is, of course, Tyminski.
I saw Dan Tyminski with Ronnie Bowman in Blacksburg, Virginia on a night that I had intended to see a Virginia Tech basketball game. When I realized that he was at The Lyric that very night, I ate the price of the basketball tickets in order to pay money to see Dan. I was not disappointed. This fella can PLAY. Guitar, mandolin, banjo, it doesn't matter - it's a wonder his fretboard doesn't spontaneously combust. His skills are THAT good.
I saw this when it was broadcast originally by chance. I loved it and got the tv to save it to memory before re-watching it over and over. This one song got me into bluegrass and opened up a whole new world of music to me.
