  • It doesn't get better than this! The talent assembled here and the music, wow. Thanks for posting. I'd love to find the DVDs for these sessions somewhere!

  • Man, every time this song gives me the chills. The best bluegrass/irish folk music I've ever heard!

  • Judging from the smiles on Dan and Jerry's faces I would say they DO like it when they start going Irish/ Scottish with the flute. The flute has a long tradition in Irish music, and bluegrass derived from Irish/Scottish music.

  • MUSIC BONER

  • Thank goodness this music is still alive and well

  • This might offend a few.. I really don't like when they start going Irish\Scottish with the flute and everything. It doesn't work well.

  • @PhiloAmericana it doesnt offend me but thats where blue grasses origins come from

  • Dan is from the town right next to mine. It's nice to see a great musician from Vermont making it big. If want to check out another Vermont artist, then check out my channel MrMattRocker. If not just keep watching this Vermont artist do what he does best.

  • Does anyone else think that Dan looks like Lotzo Huggin' Bear from Toy Story 3? In a good way.

  • Perfection from start to finish

  • Just amazing.

  • Does anyone know what the drummer is holding they look so odd

  • Absolutely Awesome!!

  • dan is loving that flute lol i cant blame him

  • I love the flute. Gives the music an Irish flavour

  • @guyhifi you said it. The flute solo got the look from both Dan and Jerry. Brilliant!!!

  • dan is a great musician/writer, they did this song justice-I like it much better than union stations! (jerry missed the chord change at the last) thats alright he picked it up where he was supposed to be!...Great job guys!

  • My last name is Tyminski Im polish!

  • @swatbandit Lots of Polish immigrants headed to America.

  • the best acuostic musicians in the world.

  • I love their expressions. Dan seems happy like a child in a toys shop, while Jerry looks at his dobro all like "What I'm playing is fuckin' amazing"...and yes, he's right...

  • Tyminski loves that flute

  • Don't know about you folks but that's the best damn bluegrass I've ever heard.

  • @Oturian Ja man!

  • @Oturian Traditional Irish influence is very strong around the 3-5 minute mark!!

  • I can't think of anything to write. I'm dumbfounded by the insane amount of awesomeness I just watched. There's only one criticism I have. How am i supposed to enjoy other music after this?! So FANfreakingTASTIC!!

  • Isn't this great pawlawlum. Thanks for identifying the flutist. Many years ago I used to play that instrument; it's harder than it looks. The flute is a hollow tube with no reed or back-pressure, so breath control is one of the hardest things. I'm an Irish American with relatives in County Kilkenny, and I love Bluegrass and Celtic, (mostly Irish, actually) music.

  • The look Dan and Jerry give the flute player Michael. That's the look of pure respect from a great musician to another.

  • could autotune have made this any better? no.

  • @cjm2005 They dont need it lol

  • Wow, great version! I never heard a flute rock like that on bluegrass, but I like it!

  • @pawlawlum That, sir, is a Mr Michael McGoldrick from Manchester.

    Unbelievably good.

  • @pawlawlum Actually Bluegrass got it roots from Celtic music. Hense why it works well wit hthe flute and such. very celtic feel actually.

  • the worst part was at 5:52

  • An amazing song, executed by top musicians working together in perfect accord -- with feeling and honesty. What's not to love?

  • why it stops there?

  • G..g..goo..gooo..ddhh..goodh..j..j..joo..job.. hard to say it cuz i rarely say it on youtube

  • Incomparable.

  • it's remind me about montana...

    BEAUTIFUL SONG)))

  • this is nothing but just flat out wonderfull , only the best of musicianship.

  • No one rips the Dobro like Jerry Douglas.

  • @mark1964boss Actually, dobro means "good" in Serbian. :)

  • great track

  • Where can I buy this video? Is this a DVD?

  • OMG I know what the breakdown is it's "The Mountain Road" by CrossCurrent

  • Soooo, the breakdown is SUPPOSED to inspire an Irish jig?

  • @CuttyMonsta It's a reel.

  • Astonishing what music like this does to you. If it don't, you ain't human!

  • This is without a doubt one of the best pieces of music i have ever heard in my life..... apparently 3 people dislike music altogether!!

  • I cannot fucking like this enough

    Holy christ

  • Absolutely wonderful! Thanks!!!

  • Great piece of music, can anyone tell me Whats is the Irish traditional tune, at 3mins 35secs in this session?

  • @Gsharkie77 I think it is "Julia Delaney's".

  • @PipersGrip But the B part reminds me also The Musical Priest, doesnt' it?

  • @MasterLindus Yea it does lol.

  • @PipersGrip Its Julia Delaney´s, indeed!

  • @PipersGrip Its Julia Delaney´s, indeed!

  • Dan's voice is like warm honey dripping into my ear.

  • makes me proud to be atleast half scottich half nordic viking...

  • I liked the song when I heard it on the album. But, this is even better than I imagined.

  • I like the mixing of the two styles, especially considering that Bluegrass is descended from Celtic folk music.

  • Stirs the soul

  • 3:37 my fav part :)

  • Simply Amazing!

  • Transatlantic Sessions 2 is to be officially released on DVD in September 2011. You can pre-order it at Music Scotland.

  • @sawtine I'm aware that Bluegrass gets it's roots from the Scots and Irish. I enjoy both music styles very very much. In this particular case i meant the Irish dance 'jig' sounds a little too upbeat in the middle of this song. When i hear AKUS perform this song they play it more slowly...with a sad, sort of melancholic longing to match the lyrics. Perhaps i prefer the slower version because i'm more familiar with it. BTW, I LOVE the TransAtlantic Sessions and could watch 'em all day long!

  • @jaksspring97 i get what you mean about the melancholic tone vs. upbeat. Then d

  • coolest part of the song... Jerry Douglass's slap on the Dobro at 3:35. Very cool que.

  • I get pretty cheesy with music sometimes, but something about the quality of this song and this version brought me to tears. Good god, how proud these guys must be to make something so beautiful together. I wish I could clearly hear what Jerry Douglas said the end. I can't help but think he was impressed with what they just accomplished (eventhough he's done this song many many times before).

  • @HELPTHEKELP Although I may just be being ignorant and not picking up on the humour but it is actually Dan Tyminski singing in O'Brother Where art thou

  • This is by far the best version of this tune that I've heard. The chaps on the fiddle and flute add that special twist.

As of my current viewing there are 400 likes and 2 dislikes.

So it still appears that .5 % of the the population is dyslexic.

I believe Alison Krauss wrote this song. .

Does anyone know if she has been on any of the sessions?

  • Sweet jazz flute.

  • the Irish lick starting at 3:35 sounds odd in this song...but i was pleasantly surprised that the flute actually sounds pretty good in a bluegrass song.

  • @jaksspring97 I couldn't disagree more.. the irish kick was a really nice addition to this song... as it turns out, this song demonstrates how traditional irish music and bluegrass are quite complimentary. That's just my opinion (and the musicians on the take obviously).

  • dan is great wow

  • Could be that I just don't know enough, but how the hell does this guy play slide guitar with just his fingers?? Forgive me for being a retard ;)

  • @CaraminTim Its actually called a "dobro" or resophonic guitar, not slide guitar. But he has a metal slide in his left hand and picks on his thumb, pointer, and middle fingers on his right hand. His name is Jerry Douglas. Look him up. He's ridiculous.

  • FANTASTIC !!!!!!

  • Dan is clearly impressed and loving the magnificence of Mr McGoldricks flute.

    Pure genius!

  • bluegrass kix ass!!!

  • you can hear "shady grove" in here, and Grisman's rendering of it in Opus 38

  • Words fail me. I think that might just have been the best piece of music I have ever heard!

  • how can singing about CORN sound that good??? they/he could sing about pancakes and maple syrup and still pull it off....

  • One of my very, very favourtites

  • This is so freaking unbelievably awesome !!!!! Those celtic melodies fit perfectly with the bluegrass sound !!!

  • @SteveHarrisLagoudaki So Bluegrass met its grandad.. Maybe we could call it " Greengrass"? ;)

  • @KapteinOpel "bluegrass met its grandad".... I don't think it could be put any better. A lot of irish, scots, welsh, and english up in those Appalachian hills... where do people think bluegrass got its roots? One commenter on here even thought the "irish kick" sounded odd with this song... they couldn't be more wrong. I don't think Dan and Jerry could have been more pleased to hear this collaboration of this song. You can see it in their faces while they play. Simply moving.

  • One of the best interplays by Dan and Jerry at the beginning!

  • Awesome! Great combination of skilled artists. Celtic and bluegrass are a great blend!

  • Rory McIlroy on drums...

  • It sure kicks the shit out of rap !

  • Two people couldn't hoe corn!

  • NEXT TOON. I like that

  • There is Jerry Douglas, and everyone else

  • Where's the love button?

  • Can you buy this on DVD, if there is, does anyone know the name of the DVD ?

  • @Faroefolk Its on the BBC 4 transatlantic sessions (the moast recent series I think so probably not on DVD just yet) have a look on the BBC website

  • @tjwfiddler i will do that. Thank you very much ! :)

  • what's that flautist's name? I saw him play in Mark Knopfler's band last tour when he came to Michigan, it was exquisite.

  • @SlickSmooth22

That's Mike Mcgoldric. (Flook, Capercaillie, Early Lunasa, The Michael Mcgoldric Band, and God only knows how many other bands)

  • why do they always describe him as 'bearded?' yes, he has a beard, but don't define him by his beard. That's way shallow.

  • this is truly amazing you can see on his face that he's putting so much emotion into this song

  • This is absolutely awesome.

  • Fantastic. I am being VERY picky when I say this but I swear they get a bit excited and speed up! Amazing though.

  • @rivermandrake1 that means theyre vibing off eachother being real musicians making real music.

  • bugger

  • WOW!!!! Switched on BBC 4 last night and heard this. I am now a big fan.

  • Dan Tyminski, with Jerry Douglas of course. Thanks for uploading. This is wonderful.

  • 2 justin bieber fans watched this

  • "The country is laid out in a haphazard, sloppy fashion, offensive to the tidy, organized mind."

    -Alan Brien

  • gotta love that mysteriously dissonant IV Chord at the end

  • love this song, but dan and the guys also played a version of Down in the Willow Garden on this episode but the original posters page has been removed. Anyone one know where i can watch it??

  • Transatlantic Sessions - S04E01 (BBC4 13th September 2009)

  • Dan has an amazing voice. The flute adds a great sound to the melody

  • B - E - A - U - T - I - F - U - L

  • goddamn that steel guitarist can play

  • @callmeic this is the legendary Jerry Douglas

  • thank U! For what?.....fuck you!!!!!......

  • Holy smokes this song gave me goose bumps! Real American music!

  • 'Tis Russ Barenberg on the mandolin..

  • Michael McGoldrick on flute, Aly Bain on fiddle, looks like Phil Cunningham has taken to the piano, Jerry Douglas on resonator guitar. To me, it looks like the bassist is Conrad Molleson who played with string sisters, along with James Mackintosh on drums. And of course Dan and a guitarist I cant recognise.

  • @androssl Todd Parks is the bass player. Apart from that, the rest of the list is correct. The only guitarist on the video, besides Jerry Douglas is, of course, Tyminski.

  • @Trunchisholm

    Russ Barenburg played as well.

  • @sinjin480

Damn, I mistook a short glance and mistook the mandolin for a guitar... Am I not a twit?

  • Brilliant

  • i love it, one of the best i've heard

  • Wow!!!!! Magnific!!!

  • Stunning :-)))

  • Who is it plays dobro on this again? I'm not normally a fan of it but he's definitely the exception.

  • @Derucolindo Jerry Douglas

  • GOD DAMMMM!!!!!!!! that was fuckin badass!

  • I saw Dan Tyminski with Ronnie Bowman in Blacksburg, Virginia on a night that I had intended to see a Virginia Tech basketball game. When I realized that he was at The Lyric that very night, I ate the price of the basketball tickets in order to pay money to see Dan. I was not disappointed. This fella can PLAY. Guitar, mandolin, banjo, it doesn't matter - it's a wonder his fretboard doesn't spontaneously combust. His skills are THAT good.

Oh yeah, he can sing too.

  • THIS IS SOMES REALS GOODS BLUES TOKI!1

  • WOW...amazing!

  • The repeat button has officialy been raped

  • I listen to this on my phone all day

  • Is that Brian O'headhra on the drums?

  • @loriscotia It's James McKintosh. He plays with lots of acts, but I think Shooglenifty is his main gig.

  • lyrics are hilarious.

    musicianship is amazing.

  • Great stuff

  • January 31st, Royal Festival Hall - can't wait!

  • Mighty fine pickin' and a grinin'!

  • WOW.... why am I surprised.... Dan ROCKS

  • Maybe the greatest song/version i've ever heard!

    Incredible!

  • @iunesd you're right! Incredible version.

  • Would have loved to have seen Tyminski and the late Hoyt Axton team up

  • A fantastic version of this song done by incredible artists. One of my favorites ever!!!

  • Anyone know what the tuning the slide players using?

  • @DanMeagher If your talking about Jerry Douglas on the dobro more than likely hes using open D but dont hold me to it.

  • This is absolutely sublime

  • And that's Michael Mcgoldrick on the flute ... What an incredible band!

  • unreal!

  • George Clooney wishes he could sing like this.

  • @HELPTHEKELP at great number of people wish they could sing like this, including me :)

  • Wow how lucky are we to be given this? i am blown away thankyou for uploading it.

  • this is a good song but its bad ass when robert plant sang it on crossroads, the best!!!!

  • will this be released on dvd by any chance ?

  • @Krehyv It already is, It's calle Transatlantic Sessions 4. it's brilliant! =)

  • @Longhill7 Thanks mate, i'll be sure to pick up a copy! :)

  • I saw this when it was broadcast originally by chance. I loved it and got the tv to save it to memory before re-watching it over and over. This one song got me into bluegrass and opened up a whole new world of music to me.

I do like the single with Alison Krauss but this version has the amazing breaks that blew me away originally.

    Thank you for upping this.

  • That guy on the flute's from lunasa...or was....Dan Tyminski and lunasa member.....what an epic combination. I love when two different genres collide

  • Great guitar playing and great singing! Dan just sings wonderfully for a Yankee!!

  • Great guitar playing and great singing! Dan just sings wonderfully for a yankee!!

  • flux's thumb should be in the hall of fame! the smile on Dans face is priceless when the flute player takes a break!!

    amazing musicians all!

  • flux's thumb should be in the hall of fame!

  • They quietly play their music without fanfare and us wise ones relish their absolute

beauty. This is why God gave us the ability to play.
