Tony Rice is a good ole boy, totally not a Borat! (Neither is Wyatt :P! ) I'd love to see one of those amazing Japanese fingerstyle players try to tackle some of Tony Rice's stuff. If anyone can send me a link of something like that, I'd love to see it. Seems to me that they have so many amazing technical guitarists over there, would love to see them tackle the true soul of Bluegrass.

Love this guy! On his 1st Homespun Tapes series (cassettes in 1983 or '04), Tony laments that "both of my hands are kinda small." Oh, now! I'd pay big bucks to have hands 'that' small. Haha.
@chillichomper like the song, but all A in the base. the first part... Am11 sound, then a quick Bb to C /all over A bass. then quick D/E (d with e in bass) to Am9 (Am with c on 5fret gstring with open bstring too)... then Db7#9 (hendrix chord) to Cmaj9 w/open e string to F... to a quick D to Am9, then that part again... Db7#9 to Cmaj9 to F... to D to Am... then a lick into the Dm modal vamp then straight to the bridge of the song in the relative major key F... then to the Csus2 top.
Love Tony, love Doc, love Norman......the best acoustic guitar i have ever heard is an old duo--Batdorf and Rodney----granted it's not bluegrass...check em' out.
Sorry Ded... Tony does own one of the most famous of all Martins, the highly modified (enlarged sound hole, Gretsch blank fretboard, unlabeled headstock) Clarence White D18. But in this video he is playing the Santa Cruz Guitar Company Tony Rice signature model, which is modeled after the White D18, in every detail. His brother Wyatt also appears to be playing one of the Cruz Rice models.
Don't be sorry! You are 100% correct! Thanks for setting me straight. However I do believe he owns more than 1 Martin. Ever heard the album Tone Poems? Tony & David Grisman play a bunch of songs on their vintage instruments. It comes with a booklet that pictures each instrument & gives much history on each. It's a beautiful album with a great booklet!
double check the liner notes... they do not own most of those instruments. The Tone Poems series is GREAT, but like the Tone Poets 2cd set, which spins the concept into various players on two instruments, for the most part they used instruments they borrowed for the recordings. That being said, Rice probably does own more than one Martin. He does have a few of the Cruz guitars too.
Didn't know. NOt really a Phishhead. They have tried some interesting concepts. The costumes were a bit amusing when they started out. To be honest I haven't followed them much since. Their album reproduction covering concepts were well done. He was less than enthralling on the clip that I happened upon. I am guessing he is not their lead vocalist. Curious... what drew you to their music? Somehow they attracted a lot of deadheads. I just wasn't one of them.
I love everything from Frank Zappa to Bill Munroe! It took a minute to click with Phish but the more I listened, the more I understood their music. Pink Floyd was also like that for me. I had to listen a few times before I got it. Now I love it! I really think you might enjoy Mike Gordon's first solo album called "Inside-In". He has a lot of great players on there with him. Bela Fleck, Col. Bruce Hampton, Vassar Clements, just to name a few. Try to Google it & see if they offer a few tracks!
thanks for the heads up... I saw your comment on Zappas early 70's band w/Ruth Underwood,Napoleon, Duke, Fowler(s), Thompson, etc. I agree completely by far my favorite Zappa band. Saw them with Waits (solo) as the opening act. He also had Ralph Humphreys as a 2nd drummer awsome show. Ah the dear Vassar... lucky enough to see him with O&ITW for the Boarding House sessions. Probably among the few there, who knew he was the real star of the band. The guys in the band all knew.
To be honest I like Phish's music best post Billy Breathes disc. The earlier stuff is a bit weird but still a lot of good jams. Mike Gordon's music rocks from the get go. I love every solo project he has done. Forget Google! They only offer lame samples. Mike has done 2 albums with guitarist Leo Kottke. Both are available on Myspace audio player. You can listen to the entire albums. Just search myspc music for Leo Kottke! The albums are called 66 Steps & Clone! Hope you like it!
Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice have a very similar solo style! Especially on their CD The Pizza Tapes with David Grisman, I could barley tell who was soloing!
Maybe I need to hear more stuff, but on this video and the Pizza Tapes they sounded really similar. I tend to think Tony Rice sounds a little more refined than Jerry though.
I hear a little blues in Jerry's soloing style and not so with Tony. But like what else do you observe as a major difference in their style? Because I still think they sound sort of similar with the notes they choose...
I think their tones are definitely distinguishable. Their technique, etc. is a big part of that. I can hear a guitar break and tell that it's Tony Rice, can't say that same for Jerry though.
wow... that guitar has such a warm sound to it... im watching this just to listen to the guitar cuz lol.. im not near advanced enough to learn this yet haha...
if you find the right one. they've come down a bit over the years, i think. And then they make models for upwards of 30,000 dollars and higher more so for the expensive overdone inlay work. Like any acoustic, you have to go for feel ,intonation, and resonance above cosmetic design and the price tag. I've switched to Breedlove's O-model non-cutaway type and find them exquisite. Martin has nothing left to prove these days but Breedlove does, so every guitar is made to a higher standard.
theres actually a ton of small custom luthiers out there today. But i chose Breedlove in a sort of blindfolded test. Turns out he's been around for about 20 years building for other guitar makers and now has a shop in Bend, Oregon. Even the Korean models are pretty fantastic, although i wanted a heritage model. it's the exact same thing as an OO-model Matin with no fancy inlays and cost 2,200. got it for 1,850. Oh, BTW don't buy those $15 strings either. they're no better than the $5 ones
All this arguememt?? If you have followed bluegrass over the years you would know that there is not one bluegrass band today that doesnt draw influnce and imperation from Tony. He is the best because he is loved and respected by all. Stops argueing and turn on The Bluegrass Album vol.1. Tony is the Bill Monroe of the future. He is admired by all and coped by many! The best is who will be rembered in 50 years like Bill hes a intovator and leader!
Stunningly beautiful. it seems that the guitarist on the left is standard tuning and Rice has dropped the low E to a D. that's usually as far as drop tuning should go for the most part. just enough drone on the low register without turning your sound into a dirge where you use only one or two fingers to "find" easy consonance. But then it's down to the imagination and fluidity of the guitarist himself i suppose.
@flatpikinguitar Actually, Tony did NOT do a lot of cocaine in the 70s. In his recent biography he states that he ALWAYS stayed away from coke. Beer, reefer, and coffee, now that's another story. Not sure what your source is for the coke comment, maybe you just assumed that because everybody else was doing coke in the 70s that Tony did too.
Don't forget Bryan Sutton, David Grier, and Kenny Smith!!! So many great players... how can one truly be the best. And of course, if it weren't for C White, would Tony Rice be who he is?? Happy pickin... S
Tony was around 26 years old when he recorded the "Manzanita" album. I first heard this album from a relative 20 years ago. It is an amazing album. Streets ahead for it's time.
Doc played more melody, but Tony played cleaner. I don't think you can compare the two because they have two completely different styles.
Don't forget to throw Cody Kilby, Mark O'conner, and Tim Stafford into the mix of great flat pickers. I think Cody Kilby is the best guitar player Ive ever seen in person.
I checked the winfield site and I saw no mention of JP ever in the top 3. If I'm wrong, let me know. Not sure if Tony ever entered a Winfield contest. Winning a contest proves the winner is really good, but some of the greatest flatpickers have never won winfield. Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, David Grier, ect... Even Mark O' Connor says that he has lost more than he's won.
without a doubt the best flat picker in the world I caught his act with Allison Krauss in chatanooga while on vacation and this guy is the reason allison got into bluegrass...
Are you kidding? that makes me laugh. Cormier is a hack compared to T. Rice, who is the most innovative player since Martin started making guitars. Best ever, case closed. You must be from Canada.
I agree totally, Tony's one of the best--I just love his style. I just wish he could still sing, I loved his voice. But if we're gonna choose the all time best flat top bluegrass pciker, hands down it's Doc Watson.
This is a great clip and Tony is fantastic but for all around best flat-picker, I'd have to give that to Norman Blake. The sheer complexity with the combinations of rhythm, melody, and cross-picking of the stuff he plays puts him above Doc (who I think is great) in my opinion. Check out "Norman Blake, Flatpicker" on Youtube. I hear a lot of Norman in much of what Tony Rice plays.
Beautiful piece of music. I just picked up this video and it's amazing. Wyatt is great. If you're looking to expand from basic folk/bluegrass rhythm guitar playing to something more advanced, then this video is wonderful. Even if you just want to watch some masters at work, this is a great pick-up.
Amazing. Long live Tony Rice! I would love for any Tony fans out there to comment on the clips of my original music. I'm a flatpicker inspired by brazilian rhythms and bluegrass. Thanks.
I wish Tony and Wyatt would make a Cd of guitar duets like this, just them two, as Tony and John Carlini did a few years ago. Wyatt backs Tony better than anyone.
im just getting to acoustic guitar im a electric shredder, ie eddie van halen, but these acoustic bluegrass guitar players are da bomb. check out zane fairchild and his picking partner greg english on you tube 2 more awesome cats. can any one recomend other guitar players in this style? Thank You Richie Britt
Awesome. Tony's my favorite acoustic guitarist. Wyatt is very high up on my list as well. Together, they're about as good a duo as you will ever hear.
T rice is the bomb. he borrowed from Clarence, and pracitcally every picker out there borrows from T. Sooooo tasty and technically sick. what more is there to say.
Manzanita- For my money one of the most elegant and lyrical flat pick pieces written. One of the best traditional albums ever made with the best acoustic line up of players ever, ever assembyled. Tell me somethng better ever recorded.
I wanna see Devlin!!!

>>> JP Cormier BEAT Tony Rice in the Winfield...Championships,
And what year was that? To the best of my knowledge, TR has NEVER entered the Winfield contest.
I like JP, though- he's a great picker.

I've heard JP. Good. But something about Tony's smooth effortless playing makes me never tire of hearing him. He's the best as far as I'm concerned

Manzanita- For my money one of the most elegant and lyrical flat pick pieces written. One of the best traditional albums ever made with the best acoustic line up of players ever, ever assembyled. Tell me somethng better ever recorded.
