The merger benefits T-mobile customers. Especially those still in contract. Remember this is a merger. So, the law with mergers is those under contract with the company being merged would keep their current contract. At&t would not be able to touch your contract until the of it anyways. Plus, you'd get more service in areas where T-mobile does not get coverage. And keep in mind those who want to keep their plans just go to at&t and have them write your contract manually. Bam contract kept.
At&t has the money yep. I agree. But, what I don't agree with is the doj's aim for 4 wireless carriers. T-mobile does not want to stay in america. So, look at it this way. People like me who are on T-mobile would lose money would lose my service if T-mobile move out. Think about it. Without this merger you T-mobile customers might as well cancel your subscriptions now otherwise T-mobile will do it for you if At&t doesn't buy them. I think I'd rather keep my phone and service.
All I heard from him was, blah blah blah I am taking lobby money from AT&T. And I would bet money that he is an AT&T customer. How the HELL can he say or anyone, that a Duopoly is good for consumers. For example: I was with Cingular for 3 yrs before "Ma Bell" acquired them, and I loved my service. I always got good CSR service and cell (quality) service. Then AT&T bought them. It all went down hill from there to date. AT&T are vampires and want to control it all.
It wouldn't be the first time AT&T has used their monopoly to crush the competition. A new PBS documentary details the history of unethical business practices in the communications industry, it's called, "Long Distance Warrior" and here's a preview:

I wonder how much they paid this congressmen idiot to spew all the lies for AT&T on this channel? Yet another attempt to brainwash the public in effort to calm down the situation that has not been welcome by just about anyone, including uncle Sam. AT&T can kiss my shiny metal ass!
This merger is BS. It looks like Mr. Boucher is a phone company shill. He's only spewing the same crap AT&T regurgitates. The amount of jobs eliminated will greatly outnumber the promised 5,000 jobs being brought back from overseas.
The problem with his argument about the 15 year history of mergers is that none of them were in the top 5, and here we have 2 of the top five wanting to merge. There would not be a significant amount of competition. Prices will rise and competition will be reduced.
I love T-Mobile all ways will. Fuck AT&T

If you are trying to better the economy, you should help expand Cricket wireless. There will be more jobs and more consumers.
