The truth is that none of us knows what we'd have done if we'd been brainwashed while on LSD and a multitude of other drugs for months-to-years. I've done fairly in-depth research regarding Manson and the Hinman-Tate-LaBianca murders, and I actually believe that Leslie Van Houten at least, and potentially Susan Atkins and Tex as well, were/are not a risk to society outside of the context of Manson and his brainwashing. I don't think any of those kids would ever have killed anyone on their own.
In regards to the idea of Manson being an innocent who was wrongly accused by sociopathic hippie kids who murdered of their own volition - I find that completely absurd. Even Leslie Van Houten, who was given immunity in exchange for her testimony, has described the brainwashing techniques Manson used on his "Family". It's easier to distance oneself from that which makes us uncomfortable by stating "Oh, they must have had "evil" in them or they could never have committed murder.
Honestly, if Manson were in the same room with me and I felt compelled to mock him, I would. He doesn't frighten me. He has no power without his brainwashed hippie henchwomen. He's just a slightly built, manic, rambling sociopath. If he were a genuine tough guy, he would have killed people with his own hands rather than manipulating vulnerable and naive youth via drugs, isolation, and other programming techniques.
Now in regards to this clip, I think it's rather funny and clever.
Charlie NEVER killed anyone but if that's the delusion you want to carry around, so be it! I don't really give a damn because I have heard it all before!
@maxacorn he really never killed anyone, the whole healter skelter scenario was fabricated by vincent bugliosi and fueled by the media to make a whole crap load of money from the movies and books, which in fact worked at the expense of an innocent man spending the rest of him life in prison. Its never too late to stop being brainwashed by the media you know.
Yes, that is so right on! I saw a video recently where Vince actually admitted that Charlie didn't have "Helter Skelter" on his mind and that the killers had it in them already to commit murder which contradicts entirely the theory he got the public to believe during the trial. Not only that but it supports what Charlie stated in the beginning about the killers already possessing that ability before HE ever got a hold of them.
yeah because carving a swastika in his forehead and saying that i'm the crazy one is a total media creation. and stop bring some kind of BS social commentary into a spoof vid. it makes you look like a stuck up jerk ass.
jesus, think about it, this came out almost 20 years ago, its easy to imagine that charlie got to actually see this at some point in all that time. that makes me laugh my ass off. hahhahahhaha

I've been telling people about this sketch for years but have never been able to find it. It's not quite as funny as I remember, though. Great idea that could have been executed better.
I must have been under Timmy's rock all these years never to have seen this video. Bob Odenkirk is genius and quirky-perfect. Super production on all counts.
@blastingcaps, it's clear the boat left you at the dock!
Anyone notice that the name of Andy Dick's character (Van Hammersly) would later be a Mr. Show sketch?
So I'm guessing Bob Odenkirk wrote this? Or David Cross or someone who was on the Mr. Show and Bill Stiller writing staffs? (Maybe Dino Stamatopoulos?)
Horrible Manson impression. Could have been funny, just flat wasent. oh well, its ben stiller after all. The only thing funny he does is exist with that stupid look pasted on his face, you know the one...his face.
The moral of the story? Even an animal can communicate positive things if you can get past your ideas on how animals communicate. Cats bite the throats of those they love, right? Surreality, it works!
@VeroniqueDiabolique Hah! Good question, Charlie, but that doesn't make you special. We joke about all kinds of sick stuff when it's not actually right in front of us. It's part of how us normal folks make sense of the world.
I remember watching an interview that Manson did with either Barbara Walters or Diane Sawyer in the mid to early 90s. He kept saying "I walk a line, woman!" whenever he got upset and didn't know what to say. My sister and I were in hysterics. I love every line Odenkirk has in this. They are all reminiscent of that interview in a genius comedy way. It's great to see Manson as Lassie as a joke. Odenkirk is superb.
I could quote from this all day, just to make myself laugh.
I remember seeing this when I was a kid. I laughed so hard I was just wheezing. I went to middle school telling everyone I was a ghost of a phantom of a shadow in the hearts of their children.
Just hit the pause button any time Manson is onscreen. Every single frame of him is funny! Especially when he's going over that fence. I wonder if it works with the real Manson?
Comic Genius! Back in the early 90's. You had an amazing line up of shows on Fox on Sunday nite. Ben Stiller show, Herman's Head, Married with Children, In Living Color. Sadly, only The Simpsons has survived after all these years. Thanks for posting such a funny piece of material.
I'm sorry but Bob Odenkirk is one of the funniest people ever, not only are his physical performances funny but his ability as a comic writer are phenomenal. He wrote the matt foley motivational speaker bit for Farley. His history is amazing too due to all of the people he worked with including Farley, Robert Smigel, Conan, Dana Carvey etc. He does not get enough credit for the seminal work he has done. He also was a primary influence for the start of the Tim and Eric Awesome show.
@mafia67 Completely agreed. This sketch wouldn't be as great without what is clearly Odenkirk's astute character analysis of Manson and his hilarious replication of Manson's mannerisms. I love how he captures Manson's tangential logic, his strange non-sequiturs and his mysterious rage. This sketch is fucking genius in writing and performance, and Odenkirk is fantastic.
FOR ALL CONFUSED ASS TOOL FANS: This is Bob Odenkirk playing Charles Manson. Maynard isn't even in this sketch at all (however he was once in a sketch about manson)I'm shocked as hell that you fans don't know this especially considering that Maynard worked with Odenkirk on Mr. Show, when he first referenced Puscifer. C'mon people
I remember seeing this, I think the first time it aired, I was about 6 and didn't who Charles Manson was and I was like "Why do they have a caveman for a pet?"

It's Maynard ...
When asked in an interview which role was more difficult, Keenan responded, "Oh, Manson. Hes a real person. People know what he looks like, how he talked. With Satan theres so much gray area."

This was a "SKIT", people! Too funny! Lighten up - I was fascinated with the Manson family and the trial and Bugliosi and researched the hell out of it. This is meant to be funny; laugh a little!

All you Johnny Carsons and comedians that like to tell jokes about Charlie Manson, what would you do if I was standing right next to ya? Would you tell em then?

I love these artsy wannabe's with the "impeach Bush" buttons on their backpacks who constantly feel the need to post these comments on youtube. What's the matter? No one else will listen to you so you figure you'll rip apart a video with your nonsense. Your comparison of the president to Charles Manson is a stretch at best. Go play Guitar Heo or something.
This is also a spoof vs. the old Lassie TV 1950's show. The opening scene is directly copied from it. Also, much of Manson's dialogue is paraphrased from statements he made during his trial and in later interviews.
And this is THINKing to you? Where does the thinking part start: with the false causality of Bush v Manson? Or the fact that you IGNORED that Manson was there, and instructed his disciples on how to commit murder? Or what? Grow, dude. This vid should be viewed as the wonderful, inspired and politically-incorrect laugh-inducing bit of comedy that it is and nothing more. Politics? Send 'em to the Olympics...
maybe i know nothing but from the 5 minutes of the interview i saw where he told the reporter he could kill her and he wouldnt feel bad and his ramblings plus his little "jokes" about killing peole i think he is a psycho. Maybe your not a psycho but if you think he is okay then would you go and spend a week in his cell?
Hello!, i just start a research on this manson character. And i can't believe you people...and i'm not a fan or anithing, you make me sick people...all of you just laugh at something so disturbing. Remember the kills,Sharon Tate and allééyou act like ..i thinck this Manson familly try to kill people like you.
omg i love this sooo much because it is so Manson. I love it especially because of all those Manson lovers out there...this is what i hear when i listen to Manson. He's crazy point blank.
You guys are getting Mr. Show and The Ben Stiller Show confused. Maynard wasn't in this sketch, that was Bob Odenkirk, but Maynard did portray Manson in a sketch on Mr. Show.

No one else will listen to you so you figure you'll rip apart a video with your nonsense. Your comparison of the president to Charles Manson is a stretch at best. Go play Guitar Heo or something.

you and whoever you are fighting with need to stop using pages with funny clips for political nonsense

This is also a spoof vs. the old Lassie TV 1950's show. The opening scene is directly copied from it. Also, much of Manson's dialogue is paraphrased from statements he made during his trial and in later interviews.

to punkrock col23:
And this is THINKing to you? Where does the thinking part start: with the false causality of Bush v Manson? Or the fact that you IGNORED that Manson was there, and instructed his disciples on how to commit murder? Or what? Grow, dude. This vid should be viewed as the wonderful, inspired and politically-incorrect laugh-inducing bit of comedy that it is and nothing more. Politics? Send 'em to the Olympics...

Wow you are a fucking psycho if you think Charles Manson is alright to be around people if you like him soo much go to prison with him
notfunni 3 years ago
i am not a psycho.
you know nothing about charles manson.
you base your knowledge on movies and the lies told by vincent bugliosi.
punkrockcol23 3 years ago
maybe i know nothing but from the 5 minutes of the interview i saw where he told the reporter he could kill her and he wouldnt feel bad and his ramblings plus his little "jokes" about killing peole i think he is a psycho. Maybe your not a psycho but if you think he is okay then would you go and spend a week in his cell?
notfunni 3 years ago 2
yes i would spend a week in his cell.gladly.
the media created the myth of charles manson.
People like Dahmer,Bundy and in the uk Fred and Rosemary West are true psychos.
Manson is not.

Good god. I stumbled upon a link to this recently after not seeing it in years. Proof Odenkirk always had "it," even pre-Mr. Show.

omg i love this sooo much because it is so Manson. I love it especially because of all those Manson lovers out there...this is what i hear when i listen to Manson. He's crazy point blank.
aleigha0707 3 years ago
holy f*&k the way he runs at the start there....
always preferred d. cross but when I saw this show on dvd, I gained a real appreciation for b. odenkirk
no offense to b. stiller but he was the least funny guy on this show (just my opinion :P).....stiller was great in flirting
with disaster and then it was all downhill from there (not that you can find flirting with disaster anywhere)...
anyway, "you can't hear nothing when your head's in a bag jack!"
p.s.

You guys are getting Mr. Show and The Ben Stiller Show confused. Maynard wasn't in this sketch, that was Bob Odenkirk, but Maynard did portray Manson in a sketch on Mr. Show.
