My parents always told me that Santa wasn't real. They never lied to me about any make believe character. Instead they taught me about St Nicholas. A real saint in "the book of the saints" Check your local library. It tells of a man who remained anonymous (but revealed later) leaving presents at poor people's doors and windows. He wasn't rich himself. His church took care of him for a while. He gave ALL year long, not just one day. Read about him and St Valentine (valentines day).

Shockofgod. I think you should watch the full video. I was surprised at first, but it soon turns out that the video is a work of comedy. The video's creator is drawing a comparison between Santa and God so as to lampoon the aspects of faith which rely on trust and feeling over knowledge and reasoning. We are not able to give a philosophical diagnosis on a man based on his attempts at satire, which would themselves be insincere.

Santa has it's origins in Europe, to be more precise in The Netherlands. There is this nationwide festival in from around 20 November to 5th of December, that is so called the birthday of Sinterklaas. The Dutch colonists described this festival to the native people of America, and it somehow transformed into Santa Clause. There are quite a few similarities. But even further back in time; Sinterklaas (or rather Saint Nicholas) was the bishop of Turkey way back in the 1400's.

This reminds me of the first Christmas I remember. In the old country one Christmas, my siblings and I each only got 20 pesos in our stockings; my mom told us "Santa said 'sorry: all the presents got wet from all the rain and floods.'"

I started to get suspicious, but I never said anything.
