  • Response to: "...when you say its a lot of work, is it fun at the same time?"

    Answer:

Lots of work and LOTS of fun...

When you get paid to do something you love, sometimes it's hard NOT to work all day, every day...

In the long run, No Better Job in the World.

  • i hav no life, i hav nuttin else to b dedicated 2, the fact im up this late playing the playstation 3 with my over 200 game collection and my friend playing mafia 2 and watching this video in order to work on my own game shows i can put time in LOL

  • X-Files on Friday night???

    Jesus!

  • @0:18 Haha, Rod, you're so youngie-cutie. Such a complete difference from your corporate look today.

  • 2:28 thats some good true advice from Monte Krol. I downloaded the Left4Dead2 authoring tools from steam and started learning level design with Hammer Editor. Really gives me experience in level designing. You can train with Cryengine 3 or UDK.

  • subed!

  • What a load of bullshit ... Advices like follow yr heart, or some crap like that... I means nothing to someone more focus. Some good advice i think is if u want to become a game designer, u have to be proficient on these tools, and have some drawing skills naturally. After that do a portfolio and start to knocking on big companies doors. If the market is right, u will have yr job...

  • @JMeyN40 Using proper English is probably helpful, as well.

  • @JMeyN40 What the guy ment is when he said follow your heart is that follow your passion. You need to have passion for video games in order to become a video game designer otherwise whats the point?

  • @Titonicrupture What is the point to anything if u do not apply this to any other profession? What i mean is usefull tips is desirable. And this bullshit of loving what u do and stuff is an excuse to pay less than the market pay already. cause u just like what u do and wont change jobs... If an employee knows u dont have intension to change jobs, it doesnt apply to make better place to work, for example.

  • Can i ask a question? before i wanna take Bachelor of Graphic Games Design in any Universities, do i have to be good in drawing? or nowadays they use a computer to draw? Would be very appreciate it if anyone can answer :D

  • @runza123 If you are going into Game Art then yes you will need to be good at traditional and digital illustration.

if you are going into Game Design such as level design, world design, mission design etc, you don't really need to know much about drawing besides technical drawing for indoor levels and so forth which require a pencil, graphing paper and a ruler.

  • @SacredRageMedia Ooh i see, let say that if we already graduating from Bachelor in Graphic Games Design, will we be able to work in any company or games industry like CAPCOM, BandaiNamco, Konami etc? and will we be able to create a game with super 3D animation like Devil May Cry, Sengoku Basara, Soul Calibur, Yakuza etc?

  • @runza123 If you are a 3d animator then maybe so, just make sure you go to a game design school, even though some like full sail lack full country accreditation they focus most of your time on what you are there for unlike regular colleges that teach you things such as alg,eng etc. There are now even a lot of education sources made by people in the industry animationmentor (dot) com which has no accreditation but many animators are hired from there from pixar, disney etc.

  • @runza123 If you want focus is on Animation then i really suggest you check out animationmentor (dot) com cost about 18 thousand dollars for the full course but with the demo reel you can make from there you can more easily get any entry level (sometimes higher) animation job for games or movies.

  • @SacredRageMedia Daamn thank you so much mate! i really do appreciate your information & advices to me :D Because i really have an absolutely great idea to make another new evolution game for this game called "Sengoku Basara" but then neeeah i'm not good in drawing..thats the only thing that i really lack of :'( Ahahaha

  • @runza123 NP and there are many things you will find hard in the creation of games, it starts with just the idea/concept of game, then the art, then the programing, then the design/systems, sound, and then all the legal stuff (which is harder than you may think) the first five take a huge amount of collaboration though, if one slacks it can mess up the whole process

  • @SacredRageMedia oh GOD, thanks so much for the information mate...but if only i am good in drawing, i would have take this game design course as my major for my degree and if only i could show you some of my artwork that I've done recently :P..I would love to be a part of the game industry in sound, art and idea/concept of the game...Ahahaha

  • @runza123 If you really want to go into game art, you should major in game art not game design, there are many different types of game artists and it's easier to find a job as an artist than a designer, plus you can always fall back on to other industries that use traditional or digital art.

  • @SacredRageMedia Oh i see, so what if i take this course Bachelor of Arts (Digital Art), will the lecturers will be expecting us to be in good drawing on a piece of paper as well? or the lecturers will only teach us to draw on the computer itself throughout the course mate?

  • @runza123 I'm sure you will do some traditional art in college but in the industry most all is digital, even for concept artists. The only time you might need to do traditional is to sketch ideas out, (you can always do it on the computer but it takes longer).

  • @SacredRageMedia Wow! i see i thought even in the class we need to draw some sketches for character design or something like that..Is it possible to practice my drawing skills by using the "Bamboo Pen and Touch Tablet, Wacom Americas" on Photoshop and Illustrator before taking into the challenges of Bachelor of Arts (Digital Art) mate? By the way do you have facebook account? coz i thought i would like to add you :D Ahahaha

  • @runza123 Most places that teach for this industry just want your money :p and yes in college you might do that but not very much in the industry. And that's how it works on those the bamboo pen is about 2 times better than using your mouse but using a computer with an actual touch screen is 10 times better, i suggest you save your money up for a touch screen tablet laptop. one with a good graphics card and processor, at least 4 gigs of ram, and a long battery life. and yeah message me..

  • @SacredRageMedia Ahahaha oh really? now that's kinda unfortunately for those who taking game designs man XD.."Touch screen tablet laptop"...alright, I'll better save up my money for buying it..Is it most of the people are using the "Touch screen tablet laptop" for drawing some stuff mate? alright i am on my way to message you now mate :D

  • @runza123 a lot use tools like the bamboo pen, im just saying having the pen actually touch where you're looking at is a lot better.

  • @SacredRageMedia Programmers don't have to be good in art, do they? And what do programmers do in the gaming world? Design AI and Interfaces?

  • @dkmariolink No you don't need to be good at any art, but know the limitations of your artists and designers as they will know the limits of what you do, look into some basics of art and design. A programmer rarely designs, but a designer sometimes programs . There are many different types of programmers such as gameplay,ui,ai, etc.

  • @dkmariolink For example if you are a ui programmer you program what happens when the user clicks a ui button, you have nothing to do with how it looks besides where on the screen it goes, which is told to you by either the lead artist or ui designer. Your stress is not art as a programmer it is science, math, and engineering.

  • get a job in the fuckin 90s GTFOH

  • this is very old, games indusrty changed alot now :p

  • @tworaf very true... it has changed a lot. but that doesn't mean everything they say is complete bull

  • I'm a programmer and I'm proud of it :)

  • no facts, only perspect9ives i guess

  • I absolutely love nerdy people ( I'm not being sarcastic )

  • Are there any girls working in the game industry? o,o

  • @Reload25 Did you not see the writer.... and not really. The gaming industry is run by mostly males, but there are exceptions.

  • I want to do this. So many nerds. Guess I will be too! ^^

  • Some of these are very true especially when the guy said you need to know games I mean for sure it won't help you be a game designer but it will help you understand games more. College Em not important like some of these people said and how college is overrated and too much money now a days most famous game designers never even went to college. If I was a big time game designer I would tell everyone college ix not for everyone give it a try if you hate it then practice game design at your house.

  • @futureanimatior can you do that? like you dont have to go to college you can learn an practice at home then apply for a job

  • @crazyassassinkill That's what Hideo Kojima and what other game designers did. Although Hideo went to college he studied nothing towards computers or art so he was still a amature out of college. He bought a game design software practiced it for awhile and than started submitting his game designs to company he was rejected a lot but eventually with not giving up someone accepted him. Although it's much easier for college because they'll hook you up with a company.

  • @futureanimatior if your in secondaryschool what lessons would you choose to have and if ur in college what wud be the best things to choose?

  • @crazyassassinkill The best thing to go into would be game design and for like not college's probabily computers. Grades were never a big thing but to get a good job mostly it would be A's and B's.

  • @futureanimatior oh and what grades do you need high low medium, ya know doesnt matter?

  • This is helpful. :) I am doing a project about what my future career would be and researching information about it. Thanks.

  • The guy at the end framed everything perfectly. He put everything into a nut shell from what everyone else was saying.

  • How old is this?

  • @KiaraRawks exactly man! it looks dead old, cuz things have changed in the gaming industry:/

  • @KiaraRawks My guess is 1996'ish

  • Great video! i learn allot... is it good if i want to be a level designer to make maps for source games and so? or is it wasted?

  • Great advice! Thanks for this video, especially the comments about the value of a degree in this industry.

  • i like that ! thats good advice!

    1. get educated (check)

    2. build stuff (check)

    3.love games/know games (check)

4.Pound on doors it some one finally looks at a you ( check)

    5. any how get your foot in the door! (check)

    6. Sky is the limit !! ( working on it)

  • he meant no games or know games?

  • I've decided to go down the Artist route simply because it looks more fun, I was kinda put off by the maths and physics side to getting a game design course, you have to make up a lot of stuff and I can't make up stories or characters to save my life to be honest. But after what will happen on my Game Art course I could decide to look into Game Design afterwards. A career in the games industry has been my dream since I was like 3/4, its true, if you really want it you cant never give up!

  • I'm the kind of person that'll program for hours on end. For me, that's where the real story takes place.

  • I really want to be a game programmer, or designer. I'm thinking a lot of being game programmer, even if my friends tells me i have a sick fantasy. Can you guys give me some advices, or maybe mention some good programs that will help me achieve my goal. If I'm able to program before I search 4 school (3 years 4 university) I've come far, i believe. Right now, i don't understand a anything when it comes to coding. Thx.

Why do u have be good at math to do this stuff? x.x

  • I'm actually going to try start college with my marine corp GI Bill and am looking to do game design. I am excellent at math,i have great verbal skills, did 3 years of art,was selected to do murals for my school, created shirts for my battalion(I'm a grunt),I love final fantasy, sonic the hedgehog, dbz, yugioh and am always thinking to myself how i would make the game come to life much better. Alot of titles lately have been disappointing to me and hate when they base games off of movies just because

  • This is my ultimate career choice, and I'm not gonna back out, even if it takes the soul of a newborn child.

  • Yeah man, i'm thinking about it! It's cool to see somebody else agrees with me! Thanks!

  • I want to be a video game designer, but i cant draw. plus im terrible at math.

  • Do computing

  • you need to find yourself an ARTIST . . . . your game IDEAS must be MODIVATIONAL toward the DEVELOPERS, and the PUBLISHER . . . that way your math will be overseen . . . and the most you need is division . . . i hate long division . . but it not gonna get in the way of my games.

  • lol I agree. My games are a big chunk of my life. But yeah, i'll try it.

  • this is what i want to do for a living! you helped me a lot!

  • thanks !!!

  • You're very welcome! If you found this helpful, you may want to view some of the other "Game Designer" clips on the GameRefuge Channel.

  • Thankyou!
