Buckie was a class act, I can recall Richard Pitman saying in commentary, Silver Buck is making a move, and this animal has a wonderful engine, he was right, he hit the front and was never headed as he stayed on superbly well to win a high class entry in the 82 Gold Cup.
Silver Buck was a very sensitive, nervous horse and had it not been for the wonderful patience of the Dickensons and Robert Earnshaw the horse would have never been any good but he overcame his temperament and was one of the best post war chasers. Sadly, he met a tragic end, he took fright on his own yard and galloped into a high brick wall, shattering pelvis and ribs and he died of an internal haemorrhage before the vet could arrive. His last race was on St George's Day at Wetherby, he won it.
my 1st horse i saw was when i was 10 at chepstow it was inter view think fred winter was the jockey anyway class win as regards to silver buck he was class always top weight in handicaps what a jumper total class made 1 lenght at each fence loved the horse, full stop.
a year before that he gave Sunset Cristo nearly two stone in a match race at Catterick and went down by a short head. He is one of those horses that will never have a higher rating because he wasn't ever flashy. Just did the job. Michael Dickenson always had him at #1 in his book.
Remember this like yesterday- come on BUCKET! He was a favourite of mine and I saw him in the flesh running one of his last ever races at Haydock. Apparently, he was an nasty-tempered old bugger, but who cares?
A real pleasure to watch and a real legend

Does anyone know how old Tied Cottage was in this race? To my reckoning he was 14. Am I right?

Agreed. The most consistent, most reliable horse I've ever seen, and top-class.
I'd love to see Silver Buck's full racing record...
