Uh, scuse me. I've been with the series since MGS1, and I certainly don't hate Johnny. I'm glad he got a chance to go from nameless loser mook to slightly 'less' loser mook who kicks ass and gets a girl.

He's like a sneaky, loser version of Cloud.

Besides, Meryl and Snake were never going to work out. She deserved to be with someone who appreciated her and Snake couldn't because he was off saving the world. That was clear in MGS2 from Snake's dialog about 'Tomboys'.

I am a long time MGS fan, an trust me - hardcore fans hate him. People who have played the other games know he is one of the biggest retcons in MGS4, and an awful plot element.

Yes - I watched all the cutscenes, got the BB emblem and played them all countless times, including MG 1 & 2 and PO.

Well, I'm an hardcore fan too, I've played every single game of the whole saga since I discovered the first Solid game - ten years ago - and I love him, and how it came out to be a good character during MGS4. He's not Snake, he doesn't even deserve to be like him, but is a good character. Not a hero, not a legend, but a good character, this, yes, he is.

I think it's just a a matter of personal taste, just like what happens with real people: someone would like him, someone would not.
