They're basically headphones, but each band member gets their own stuff (instrument and vocals) louder than the rest, so they can hear themselves/sing/play better. Wedge-shaped speakers at the foot of the stage (pointed up at the artist) used to be the only way this was done, but those aren't as forgiving on the artists' eardrums as they had to overpower the rest of the stage volume for the artist to hear them
