Shamrock was awesome - I attended my first SCI FI convention where when i was 11 - It was called "Ultimate Fantasy" and was held to kick off Star Trek 2 the Wrath of Khan - they gave shirts to me and my friend for a new Disney movie called "Tron" and showed previews for Blade Runner, Timebandits and everything else coming out - thank you so much for this movie - really brings back nice memories. I also spotted a 7-11 there - which are no longer in Houston and a Kwick Copy, also gone.
There's a great download from Radiolovers of a broadcast on the opening of the Shamrock Hotel featuring Ed Garner and Dorothy Lamour It's worth checking out.
Thanks for preserving this. I wish pictures were left of the inside. I am a native houstonian and wish more could be done to save our historic buildings. I have upto now only seen pictures. They do not do justice to the size of the structure. I have read in Houston Then and Now that the pool was large enough to host water skiing exhibitions.
Thank you SOOO MUCH for putting this up. I attended my first SCI-FI convention here when I was 11 (1981) and it was one of the best times as a kid. I always tried to remember the outside of the hotel and now I can see it - thank you again
I grew up about 5 blocks away from The Shamrock (on Glenhaven near Kirby) so this brings back a lot of great memories, especially seeing all the lesser-known yet familiar landmarks on Holcombe. Thanks!
very nice to see this footage. thanks!
