@nljdj because he just does it the same way everytime... he said he did the obey andre the giant thing because he wanted to see how people reacted to this repetitious image they see EVERYWHERE.
Plagiarism of the worst kind...come up with something original Shepard. Just Google: Obey Plagiarist Shepard Fairey, A critique by artist Mark Vallen
I don't think it's plagiarism since most of the images he does use are under the public domain. (Most, not all. I know he's copied from non-domain artists.) I don't really see it as copying because even if it's the same image, colors are different, therefore it's really not the EXACT same. (Don't hate me, I don't appreciate that he doesn't credit, and I'm not saying it's right. I was just brought up on the more accepting side of the art world.)
@beradification I know we're all entitled to our opinions but open your head a little. Try actually going through the process of creating a stencil sometime and maybe you'll have a bit more appreciation for what he does.
Without a doubt the guy has an amazing sense for composition and texture. I'm sorry, but you can't discredit his work. You may not appreciate it for what it is, but is most certainly high quality, sophisticated work.
good interview content.. pity you couldnt have had a better quality camera. find it funny how he has his studio in his garage.. :) same as alot of people
oh i have an idea, lets take iconic images from history, make a mockerey of them and not ccredit the original artist, and we'll make millions! fuck you
there designer shirts. he put in the work, illegally n legally to get his name out there. props for any guerilla artists n graff artists who make it after putting in years of racking up global damage. most dont make it cause they aren't active or go out n bomb to much
@nerdboy123456 he sold the clothing company years ago even though he still gets money form them using his designs. He doesnt control the prices homie. On a side note, his shirts are pretty affordable, I get mine for 20-27 bucks from zumies and metropark.
He copies images, so did Warhol. But at least Warhol had something to saw about it other then " I like Obama" or "War is bad" Fairey's work looks cool yes, but it has no meaning beyond the immdeiate surface value. He is a figure head that has been raised to the status of fine artist in order to disarm the street art movement. Many street artists have complex concepts they wish to communicate. This is not his fault, he has been raised to this status by the art industry inorder to disarm streetart
Your totally right EcholnRed, but I think you know that typical youtuve audience wont get it. Fairey is a brand thats it. Very nice, visually appealing, but not art.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Fairey loves to rip off the art of people who are part of the counter culture, many times they are people of color, or groups who have fought for social justice, or radicals who have fought against their own countries. The fact that he feels entitled to do this points at his white privilege and white entitlement. When you rip off Cuban artists, Chicano artists, even groups like the Black Panthers - and you fail to give credit - that to me is an excercise of white privilege
that's so rad. I didn't know what Shepherd's art was or how it was defined until you did. Yeah as a white privileged man myself I sometimes need to be reminded of my place. Which is to not try defining what my own art is and let other non-white folks tell me what it is. Thanks again! Your rad! Keep educating the masses homie!
Hastaeltope 78 His actual art is to display his beliefs within images to the world WITHIN the world not in galleries. He ripped off freedom of speech of those who fought for Social Justice? You're telling me those who fought for social justice don't want their beliefs known and heard? Get Educated. Don't try and point out racism when your racist yourself. BTW whose art you think was one of the most significant in the Obama Campaign? Open a book and close your mouth.
Frank "officially" launched his posse campaign in 86--He really started to get noticed in 89. Yes he still skates...common its Los Angeles people...who doesnt?

So just get down with the exacto knife huh? No hot blade or saudering iron or anything? Why is it so tedious for me then? Mabey im using too thick of paper because the blade just doesnt cut it for a large peice to me (24x36 and up) ... my fingers start cramping up and shit.

@fretkills If his work lacks creativity, why is his style of works so distinct?

shepard fairey is a plagiarist,
I was at his exhibition in Boston last year and his works
are copied from photos taken by others whom he doesn't site or give credit to.
And the paintings themselves are tenth rate at best.
