BRINGS BACK SOME GOOD OLD MEMORIES AND MY YOUTH AND WENT OUT WITH BRIAN A COUPLE OF TIMES WHEN I WAS AT HOME IN SYDNEY BEFORE COMING TO THE U.S.A THANKS FOR THE GOOD MEMORIES - AM HOMESICK FOR MY BEAUTIFUL AUSTRALIA.
Wow thanks for the details of Noel Wiederberg's death. I was less than five at the time though I grew up in nearby Monterey, I was told only that the lead singer of the Delltones had been killed in a "horror smash" outside Millers Hotel Bay Street Bright le Sands. It was years before laws against DUI so the assumption was that alcohol was a factor. It was the stuff of local legend you could say. Were there other fatalities?
The original lead singer - Noel Weiderberg - was killed in a car accident on or near General Holmes Drive, not to far from Sydney Airport I think in late 1962. He was replaced by Col Loughnan, who recorded with the group for the next few years. Their first hit with Col was the Lieber/Stoller song - "Come a little bit closer"

To set the record straight, Wiederberg was not affected by alcohol. He was retuning from spearfishing at Malibar with two mates in his volkswagen.

Thanks for the info, no matter how sad one. Just to correct a little misprint: Jerry Leiber and of course, Mike Stoller

"Come A little Bit Closer". Jan 1963.
Their first recording was 1958 or '59.
