Every metro (with the exception of Miami's) - NOTE: NOT light rail system - that has been built worldwide has become SO entwined in the transport system of locale that for persons who live there it becomes "why didn't we build this sooner"!
D.C.'s Metro and San Francisco's BART system were put in less than 4 decades ago and are now so entwined with the region's transportation systems that any breakdown of them are catastrophic..... L.A. will soon be the same with their rail system.
The transit system here in Los Angeles is a Joke! I have used transportation systems from other countries like Mexico and Germany, and we are atleast 100 years behind in terms of innovation, and professional service.
@Slayerfan84 Yes, we have a long way to go, but at least we are moving rapidly in the right direction. More new rail lines every year. I love the new Goldline extension to East Los Angeles!
@Slayerfan84 Well I'm from germany (live in Canada currently) and I was in LA last yr and it was a joke. But before L.A. can actually improve their bus systems, they have to do something about the constant traffic jams. It seemed to me that they make those traffic jams on purpose. When I drove on Lincoln blvd, one light was green and the next light red and the next one green again. This slows everything down. I heard they want to make a subway line from S.Monica to Downtown or so. is that true?
@raymuser LA's subway is only 20 years old. New York's is 110 years old. We won't be getting lots of rats for a while. Also, we don't have as big of a rat problem here in general.
@Slayerfan84 Mexico? LMAO. I am from Mexico and beleive me. The transport is cheap, but the service is shit. Actually I am living in California, using MTS.
@raymuser There is no rail service to the airport? I am really surprised. It sort of went through my head that the next time I land in Los Angeles, I could take the train to Santa Barbara! Obviously wishful thinking!
@alanheath Currently the best way to get from LAX to Santa Barbara by rail requires an express bus trip to Union Station downtown Los Angeles and take a train from there to Santa Barbara.
@raymuser Thank you! I will bear that in mind. It is of course nice that someone comes to pick me up but I do not really expect them to do a 350km round tour when there is a train service nearby!
Since this is the central hub of LA Metro Rail and MetroLink in Southern California, it will probably double in traffic within the next few years as the Metro Rail lines expand throughout the metropolitan area.
I have not taken the Gold Line but love the idea of no traffic on all of the lines.

@raymuser I have just looked up the price. The most expensive 2nd class ticket was USD30. That is very cheap compared to European prices!

@raymuser: The Purple Line extension to Westwood/UCLA or possibly Veteran's hospital is building to full steam now under 30/10.
