I think he had a real crush on her. After watching Conan do interviews for a long time, you can tell when he doesn't really mean it when he "flirts" with actresses. In his interviews with her, though, he really did seem disappointed about her engagement. He dropped a lot of pretty heavy hints about their chemistry and how much he really liked her. It's actually kind of sweet. ;-) His mock yelling of "STAMOS!!!!" into the mic became kind of a recurring bit on the show.

However, I love the fact that once Selma Hayek, Kate Beckensale, and Sophia Bush started appearing on the show, that Conan's crush for Rebecca just went away, and there was new crushes. And when he got married to his beautiful wife, there was no trace of her whatsoever. It is clear that Rebecca's handlers got to her. They changed a once fun gal in 97, to a stuck up bitch in 98.
