  • I just read Gozo Shioda's Aikido Shugyo, and what you're demonstrating is, at least according to him, the secret to atemi, and what makes it aiki or not is whether nage is focused and intent on capturing uke's aggression and dissipating it. In the moment you begin that sayu undo/sokumen movement, if you really connect with uke to show him the opportunity to take ukemi, it doesn't mean you got evil if you redirect uke's resistance back on him. You gave uke a moral choice. That's very Aiki IMHO.

  • @aphor Rei!

  • @ironfisteagleclaw Onegaishi masu!

I really disagree with the idea that techniques which are stronger, or more destructive, are not Aiki. If you are facing an attack which is focused and destructive, you should blend in with it. Aikido does not, IMHO, seek to dominate an attacker, but rather to give pause and reflection in a heated moment. The best way to deal with a real hothead who will not see the futility of pressing the attack is to help him appreciate all of the consequences of violence.

  • "Titles are unimportant to me, what is important is teaching the art."

One of the best phrases EVER.

  • "Not very Aiki, but I find it street effective." Well said. Thanx 4 posting this. Haymakers can be very disconcerting if you don't prepare for them. Also, love the way you stop them from completing their move.

  • @shniddles Thank you. Peace!

  • LOL!

Quote "by gosh, you better hit them first." Unquote. Those are very wise words, even though I knew this already, it opened my eyes O.O! Lol nice video =P.

  • Nice tekniques! How many are your student now? If I can ask.

    Have a nice day!

    Yngve

  • hi. This is another stunning technique and I love it. However, it can only be used when we are not blocking too late. How can we determine if someone is going to attack early enough?

  • This can be done from a shirt grab as well. Trust me you hook that elbow hard even if you are blocking to slow it will still work. It just takes work but it can be used. My best to you. Peace!

  • your Uke Loves it...LOL

  • LOL

  • Great move, this resembles Mushadori in Ninjutsu. Thanks for the quick lesson sir. I appreciate your posting. Peace be with you always friend.

  • Thank you kindly ShinobiMystic. I did train with Hatsumi back in the day so I can't help but use what works from all the arts I have trained in. Have a great one. Peace!

  • nice video

  • Great, love your videos that I've seen so far, very well explained, thanks

  • Your welcome! Peace:)

  • soy de mexico y yo estudio aikido y lo admiro mucho peace

  • Gracias mi amigo. ¡Paz!

  • Hey, some really good advide here. You seem to honestly know your Aikido,.which is a relief, after finding so many artists (especially on youtube video's) that have learnt a few techniques but have no idea about the theory, or technique involved in what they're doing!

  • Thanks. And I agree there are some very strange people out here on youtube! Peace.

  • Well it depends on the student. Everyone learns at a diffrent rate. I would say this. It would be about 3 or 4 months of training to start to get the idea of the movement. And many more years to start to make it your own.

  • Great video! Thanks for showing YouTube viewers some of typical Aikido techniques for dealing with "realistic attacks" (not my words). The largest criticism people have with Aikido is we don't learn to deal with "realistic attacks" and we don't have Atemi. Thanks for dispelling these myths.

  • Thank you! Peace.

  • Great technique! Thanks for sharing. You're also the biggest Native I have ever seen..lol I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. My only request is I wish I could see your legs & feet.

  • I love your stuff, however I find that many of your demonstrations are done to someone who is a smaller size than you... I'm just curious... how many of these techniques that you show us give a different story depending on one's size?

  • In Aikido size should not matter. but of course it does. I am 6ft 5in tall so not many of my students are as tall as me. The Aikido is applied the same, be they tall or short.

  • waesome !

  • Thanks. Peace!

  • Another good demo, thanks :)

I gotta ask, what 'style' do you practise? I want to take up Aikido and I have noticed at least a few schools don't seem to be as realistic as what you teach.

  • Well My teacher was Bill Sosa Shihan. He was a direct student of Koichi Tohei. Who was chief instructor of Aikikai Honbu Dojo and gained 10th Dan from the founder of Aikido O'Sensei. Some would call my "Style" Ki Aikido. But keep in mind if you go to a Ki Aikido School your not going to see them teaching like I do.

If you let me know what part of the country you are in I could put in contact with the best Aikido teacher in your area. Hope that helps. Take care.

  • Ah well I'm stationed in Sweden. My main options seem to be

1.Tomita academy, with Tomita Sensei who studied under O'Sensei and who founded his own style to be more traditional.

    2. Iwama Ryo based on teachings of Saito Sensei.

    3. Ki Aikido, headed by Kenjiro Yoshigasaki (who only visits that club from time to time).

    4. Iyasaka Aikido, Inspired by Kobayashi Sensei

I guess one would have to know about the Senseis who actually conduct the training.

  • If I was you I would go with Iwama Ryu Aikido. Great stuff! Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice :) I understand that Iwama Ryu and Tomita Academy are a result of Tomita Sensei and Saito Sensei choosing separate paths, each of course claiming to be closer to the source, but I never quite understood what the actual difference is.

  • Your very welcome. Good luck!

  • sweet thank you for that

  • Your welcome. Thanks for watching.

  • Your very welcome!

  • I tired this technique at the Dojo today. It works like a charm. Thanks.... Do you do any seminars? Are you eveer in Western Canada? I'd love to train with you.

    Paul

  • Great I am glad you made it your own waza! I do Seminars but I have not been to Canada at all.

I would be glad to talk with you about a seminar just send me your dojo info and we can go from there. Peace, Robert Lara Sensei 5th Dan Aikido IronFistEagleClaw

  • I belong to a very small independent Dojo so a seminar for us only would not be faasable at all. If you were allready scheduled somewhere clos, I'd be willing to take a trip just to train with you.

  • At this time I do not have any seminars coming up anywhere near your location. But I will keep in touch in case I get called up that way.I would be happy to train with you. Peace, IronFistEagleClaw

  • quick question, do you train in random attack resistive randori? I have began training this type of randori agains more realistic attacks (ie. hook, haymaker, kick, jab, upper cut) and I find myself really struggling even at half speed attacks. I find that I can not time it properly and perform a decent technique the majoruty of the time. Any ideas, suggestions? Do you train this way?

  • Yes I do. My suggestion is that you slow down both you and you uke and break it down. Speed with the Waza will come as you train your mind, body, spirit. As My Late teacher Bill Sosa Shihan would say."practice makes permanent " train over and over the same waza and you will get much more control over any attack. Peace, Robert Lara Sensei IronFistEagleClaw

  • O There for a minute I heard a POP! and thought someone broke somthing lol! Did u get a new cam? The pic is clearer this time! =o)

  • Yeah I think I poped him shoulder. He pops alot. NO we were using his cam. My cam works well but my video capture card always makes my videos grainy and not this clear. We did it on his Pc.

Loading another as we speak. talk to you later friend. Peace, IronFistEagleClaw

  • remind me never to piss you off

  • lol. Thanks for watching brother! Peace, IronFistEagleClaw

  • Now generally when I street fight I don't come across many people that swing there right punch out so far. Usually it's one up to block the other pretty much straight punching.

Was he maybe exaggerating the punch?

And you know, I've been brought up to fight like this never knowing it was an art. AMAZING!!

    LOVE IT!

  • that hook punch is from Choy la Fut Kung Fu. the one hes was useing. We picked that strike because its easy to see on the cam. I might do another video with a very close hook and jab like a boxer might try.

Glad you liked the video. Peace, IronFistEagleClaw

  • Very cool. I enjoyed watching. I'm sure you've seen Steven Seagal and his Aikido training films. It's truly an amazing art. Thanks

  • Thanks. Yes I know Seagal works. Hes cool. Peace,

     IronFistEagleClaw

  • Awsome!! I'm going to practice this ...THANX!!!! Your a good teacher!! :)

  • Thank You very much. Peace, IronFistEagleClaw
