If mutating this gene/genes is so simple and it helps the plants survive, why hasn't nature already done it? There must be a reason. In other words, there must be a downside to this.

I doubt if anything can be made truly "drought-proof". And it's a fair question to ask why grass wouldn't have already evolved to survive as best as possible in it's natural environment. Or perhaps that's the problem--a lawn in front of your house is not grass's "natural" environment. Where did our grass originally come from, by the way?
I like this with proper testing i would be a real help
positive:more food, more water, more plants for ethanol, and nicer lons(woopty doo)
negative:possible allergic reaction in large amounts of people(which proper testing would find and fix before becoming a real problem),hippies and religious freaks would bitch
I guess you forget Modern Day science still can't explain how ancient cultures built some of the most amazing things without these apparently we would die and live in caves yeah good one
Would be great to reduce water usage on lawns (a waste of water to have British style lawns in US western deserts, but hey that is just my opinion). Wonder if it could help make food crops or corn for fuel crops less water hungry too?
I wish you would use more of the actual science terms. It would take much more time to say, "Breathing holes called stoma" and would help create a more scientifically knowledgeable society.

i bet these "breathing holes" will cause some problem like 50% less oxygen released or something....stupid idea, juet leave the plants alone, stop being lazy, and water them every day

noo, you shut up ok, this stupid idea they have may save water but its still just putting chemicals onto the one thing that keeps us alive. READ A BOOK. i know a lot more then you do..
....ok i never said they were toxic but believe me we have all kinds of stuff like this that have bad results, end this ok dude i dont like fighting with other ppl, your right, im right, it doesnt matter

Allergic reactions? They're talking about changing DNA, not using chemicals to make plants require less water..
Weren't you guys listening...?

Ok uh Lets say we reduce your breathing tube to 10% how does that help again?
they already belive Co2 is killing plants and we the people are the cause and we need to be killed
I hate worthless science

if it made me more water efficient and didnt harm me i wouldnt mind
and if you hate science so much stop using your pc, computers are products of science
the only way you can live with out science is living in a cave eating raw meat that you killed with rocks

They don't put "chemicals" into the plant. They mutate the DNA structure. There are no toxic chemicals involved.
