To be honest.. Dennis DeYoung had a better voice for the band. Lawrence does a great job on the keyboards, but his voice is not very good. I like Lawrence, just not as a singer for Styx. True, he is keeping Styx alive, but he just doesn't have that same singing style Dennis had that made Styx sound like Styx. I do apologize for comparing the two, but it's just an honest opinion is all.
I don't really care who sings this song as long as they do it justice. I have to say that this is better than what I expected. I just don't like how they were trying to do it in the old style. And you can tell that is what they are going for here.
Styx should combine the two volumes of Regeneration to make a complete cd to sell in stores. Styx are robbing us people who don't go to their concerts of a chance to hear these great versions.
@patriot4friendship The verdict, they blew it away. They were so happy while performing it showed. Our little about maybe 3,000 person crowd sounded huge, like a true concert hall. You I'm guessing were probably in a much larger crowd of people, the crowd I was in would be able to compete with your crowd ~ on noise, with ease. I can't blame a single person, it sounded great, hands down. Even though Shaw was a little sick and he couldn't sing all the way, they all put on a hell of a performance.
I'm a long time loyal STYX fan. I like the "regeneration for this generation". I'm also a fan that has continued to purchase and play STYX music. Looks like the paying customers (and I might add the crowded concerts as well) should say something about the bands success. Go STYX to 30+ more years !!!
@patriot4friendship i think it just me but i KNOW they could make well over 1 million Dollars if they had a return to paradise tour with dennis like 1996 OR JUST ONE FLIPPING SHOW SO I CAN SEE THE REAL STYX!1
@SnareForLife1995 I was hooked for life from the early STYX on ...It would be Absolutely Fantastic for some sort of "Reunion" with Dennis (dare imagine even a tour !!!) but until that day and beyond (even if it never comes) I'll stay "Forever a STYX Fan ! Still love seeing the band live in concert (especially with my wife and teenage daughters).
@patriot4friendship dude thats epic, ive loved styx sence i was 4 ( i found a kilroy was vid and was hooked) i love going to see them with my dad and my aunt. I got to see them on my 16th birthday and the guy let me back stage to meet them epic. If dennis comes back i would go to every show...no matter the cost
As a DDY fan. He is the only person that can do the songs justice. I've seen both act live and there is no comparison. This so called Styx group is a tribute band with a couple of orignal guest players. (You can also make the argument that this is really truly only a tribute band becasue the only orginal memeber rarely plays anymore, and JY and TS are definitly not orgianl members.) Again, thus only a tribute band. Nothing more.
@legasimusic no your just mad that dennis left they are still styx they just wanna please fans. Tommy was there for most of it, jy was there for almost all of it, there for Dennis and his band the music of styx is more of a tribute band but i think me and you can agree, they NEED to reunite
BOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Man, i really miss Styx...the real Styx!! Don't like the vocals here at all and Todd is an amazing drummer for sure, but it is just a little too much "chops" playing for the song, i mean so what,so you can play a lot of notes, play for the song. Sorry, this is not good, and that is just my opinion!1
This just plain sucks, and even worse... I just saw the "Styx official website"... In the description of the Band's history Dennis Deyoung is never even MENTIONED, neither is the song Babe. What do these "band members" think??? Can somebody tell them what time it is??? They go around using the name "Styx" and profiting from it while denying what and who actually made that name profitable. Don't like the guy? fine, but at least act ethically.
Gotta say it again→ 4:48 is a better 'explosion' than the original thanks to TODD.. He Is incredible, how he improv's just about every song- adding to what Chuck made good...he makes it awesome.. Best STYX addition→the Drummer.!
I love this version. Very different from the original though, but I don't hate either at all. To me, they're completely different and really can't be compared. But maybe that's because I've only seen Styx live with Gowan, and DDY was gone from Styx before I could even walk...
This version doesn't exactly suck, but Mr Gowan and company just don't have the same heart in this. I'll see this group soon, but I so miss the Paradise Theatre days, and before. I'll be front row, so will enjoy Tommy and JY hopefully bringing it!
Ok, these are my views. I, personally, love this version just as much if not more than the original. However, if Dennis had been involved in this it would be better still. But all you out there saying how much this sucks, you fail to elaborate. If you really think it sucks, you must have some sort of reasoning behind thinking so. This version holds very true to the original. So, I'm not telling you that you're wrong, I'm just asking you to elaborate on why it sucks.
Love Gowan and so happy he is keeping Styx alive! A lot of you are disappointed Dennis is no longer singing - Yes, he was wonderful but shit happens! Any one of you out there would jump at the opportunity to join a famous rock band and hope to be accepted! Queen did it and many others too because we all love to see good things continue. Don't compare Gowan with Dennis - if you took a new job anywhere, you wouldn't want to be compared 10 years later to the employee before you.
@1sequoia Oh Dennis still sings, he is just not in Styx anymore. He tours just as much as Styx does, if not slightly more. and he does perform this and the other Styx great songs.
i came here willing to give this a chance. i really did. it sucks. plain and simple. my mouth just hung open at how bad it was. what exactly does “Styx” plan to acheive with this? i thought when a band re-records music they would bring back the feeling of when it was released and modernize it. well, they failed. MASSIVELY. i'm sorry, but this is insulting.
OK how Long Has Gowan Been in Styx? about 10 years?
Thats longer then most singers today last, i never hear about most groups after about 1-3 years
Yes they only had 1 album (Cyclorama) but its hard to please the public these days...
Do i think this version is better then original? No. Do i think this version is worse? No. Each version has something unequal like the ending to this has a small part to the live version then fades out. The older one just sings for about 1 min then fades
@llazyart Not BAD -Yeah but Live → even 25 years ago.► That's the way they ALWAYS ended it.. except for DDY faking he was throwing a baseball. ! Who remmebers that..?
Oh my God...how pathetic does the version of Karioke Styx have to be to try to redo this classic Dennis DeYoung song? The vocals are truly awful....its almost like they are trying to destroy whatever dignity's left of this once great band...
How can anyone say that gag mouth gowan sounds like Dennis? They sound NOTHING alike.

This is pretty good and Todd's drumming is amazing (as usual) and I'm glad they lengthened it a bit from the original.

Lawrence Gowan does a great job singing this song. But I really wanted to hear Styx rerecord this song with Eric Cartman guesting on vocals.

Yes Gowan isn't as good as Dennis, but since Dennis isn't a possibility anymore I think Gowan is a worthy replacement
