  • i like how silent it is that just adds to the creepiness

  • The nervous system going crazy at the end, something tells me the last thing these guys felt was extreme pain.

  • @Watch3r15 I doubt that. They were hibernating. If anything, that's the nervous system making a last-ditch attempt to keep the body's main functions going.

  • And you thought Windows Vista was bad...

  • in 2010 you find out what went wrong with hal. nasa lied to hal and screwed up his programming.

  • in film silence = death

  • 1:47 HAL: Oh shit...I shouldn't have done that.

  • The first time I watched this movie I fell asleep from all the silence...Computer Malfunction woke me up.

  • no one used sound as good as kubrick

  • 1:26 Hal:DIE!

  • Creepy to the point of insanity

  • i want someone to edit franks death scene making hal say "you will die" ganon style

  • me 2 , I get chills still from this ; hella creepy !!! wow !!!

  • So, you're saying, HAL killed everyone because it didn't understand the simple concept of lying??? He should meet my wife...that bitch never tells the truth.

  • You forget Frank

  • HAL is the true terminator. Kills them in their sleep

  • I never noticed it before, but Jailbot from Superjail looks like these cryogenic pods, which in turn look like white coffins...

  • Amazing the way Kubrick uses sound

  • dude........HAL is awesome

  • I like that drawing Frank does of the astronauts in stasis

  • @TheWheels777 It was Dave...

  • Which vital sign is for the heart?

  • @Goldenrod636 The first one.

  • The creepiest part is that, looking at them, you can't tell anything happened, but you know...

    *shudders*

  • thats not how they died in the book, though.

  • @skinnymun How did they die? I haven't read the book.

  • @skinnymun well the book and the movie were both made separately, the book was to explain more of what the movie didnt though

  • @soric16 actually, the movie was made after the book. the movie was supposed to be (more or less) a remake of the book

  • I like how there already was a built-in indicator light for "LIFE FUNCTIONS TERMINATED" because they anticipated this might happen.

  • @apl175 Nowadays we call they the New World Order Conspiracy because it is not a theory anymore.

  • I feel sorry for the guy that has to sleep upside-down.

  • Hahaha, "Life Functions Terminated". Ridiculous error messages.

  • Dick move HAL, dick move.

  • It sounds like my alarm clock was going off. I wanted to hit the snooze button several times. After all, a girl needs her beauty rest.

  • @aurorasky19 Just make sure no malavolent supercomputer doesn't smother you in your sleep. Human females needing their beauty sleep is ineffecient. Computers do not have gender. They do not sleep.

(I imagined all that being said in Hal's creepy voice, and now I've freaked myself out, lol!)

  • @CinnabonChan that would have been a great line in the movie. lol

  • this is why we should'nt trust steve jobs. ;p

  • The reason why 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of my favorite films is because most of the action takes place in silence. It shows that action and power is not necessarily about being explosive.

    Thank you Stanley Kubrick :)

  • @MysticDestroyer13

    Exactly

And when sound is used it adds to the atmosphere

Like he sound of an airtank leaking when the POD kills Frank and the same noise being used when Dave disconnects HAL

  • The vital signs monitor looks so ahead of time (except the "malfunction" blinking which looks like it has a lightbulb underneath) it's hard to believe it was all designed 42 years ago - you can actually imagine seeing displays like this in a modern hospital!

  • @Roodosutaa Yes I noticed that too. Even though I've seen this movie many times I still note the displays thinking, "gee that looks good even today".

  • Wow. That scene was so simple and horrifying that it was beautiful.

  • @AniRemi stuff witch is hard to come by in movies

  • the pods they're sleeping in look like coffins...

  • @sardns exactly.

  • @sardns Those are not coffins, they are FEMA containers, and nowadays they hold four or five bodies.

  • @sardns That's probably the point. Its symbolic.

  • This must be what happens to a program when a virus turns it off.

    'MALFUNCTION, MALFUNCTION'

    'Bzzzzzzzzzz...'

  • @hotelmario510 This is what happens when government gives a secret to a computer. According to space odyssey II, it is revealed that hal is not programed to lie. Look it up :)

  • the silent modernized technical perfect death

  • This scene is so creepy.

  • @MVJSTRIKES Chills went down my spine when I saw the vitals flatline
