Like the choice of music, but couldn't they have had Marvin Gaye or Diana Ross do a few songs or were they busy that day? Or maybe just too expensive? It was in Detroit after all.
I just wonder if any of the have the "track record of " Michael Jackason, or Pete Townsend. I heard that next year they have invited Gary Glitter Iif the UK promises to take him back after).
Somehow, I remembered this being a lot worse, but after watching it, I realize that these performers can actually carry a tune. So I'd have to say BETTER than BEP.
Hey, simontyrock: Very funny observation! I do love the unlimited exuberance of the Amway-type companies (just try this at "any old company"). Yours is the best comment posted! Thanks for the laugh.
This is actually 70's white bread encapsulated. Up With People toured for years as a analgesic for the Silent Majority to erase the horrific memory of the Woodstock generation. By the time it made it to the Superbowl it was very stale. Sid Vicious was dead for three years by the time this was filmed.
Song" in the sixth grade. The guy singing "Abraham Martin & John" reminds me of Tom Netherton from Lawrence Welk. He's pretty cool. And the blonde with the Toni Tennille haircut singing "All You Need Is Love" is so beautiful.
This show inspired me to seek out a the closet Up With People show to interview. I traveled in Cast D 83-84. This brought back so many wonderful memories. Thanks for posting it.
It may have appeared to a religious organization but not really. Yes there was a song, What Color Is God's Skin, but there's nothing wrong with striving for positivity in a world that is filled with negativity.
@tillmanism Actually, UWP's earlier origins did have a moral/religious fiber called Moral Rearmament. That's the copywrite on my music from Sing out Phoenix from the early 70's. Being a host family for almost 20 years we hosted every color, creed, religion -- and welcomed them with open arms. Still in touch with many around the world today.
Wow I miss the UWP 70's years. It was great to see Michael Knowles and Humberto doing their thing. Thank you Lynne Morris, Herbie and the Coldwell Bros. and of course Mr. Belk.

An icon of bad taste. If you had lit a match on that field, those polyester costumes would have gone up in flames instantly. And if you want to play a prank on someone, send them the "Up With People" song and see how long it takes them to get it out of their heads.
I wanted to join them too. I guess I just wanted to be that happy- haha
We had two of the girls billet with us in the 70's. One of them was brought home by police in the wee hours after getting in trouble at a bar. There ya go.
My kids love this,,,lol,,, OK so we just got done torturing them with this. I'm not sure they get it yet. I met my wife touring. 22years and still going.
Heh... I was on a nostalgia kick, and got to thinking about Up With People...lol.
When they were touring schools in the 70s, I saw them several times. Back then I looked at it as a chance to get out of class for awhile. I didn't realize how talented they were. That's quite a repertoire of stuff, packed into 9:57.
@woman4life They disbanded for a few years after the Denver move, but yes they are back as a one semester program with more focus on community service, and longer stays in communities. UWP still very much alive and well.
His dad, Bill Welch wasn't in this video, but was always part of the teaching side of both vocal & instrumental part of the many years and many shows!
So Great! This was the show that got me interested in UWP. I was lucky to travel in '84-85. We were supposed to perform at the Olympics in LA, but it didn't happen because of the boycott
omg! that is hysterical! i can't believe you were actually in it! i begged my parents to let me join/audition or whatever it was. of course of would of only been about 12 in 1982 butwho cares i was ready!! congratulations!!

I remember watching this halftime show in Tokyo. Sing Out Fort Wayne, summer 68 in Mackinac and Ft Slocum, and the tour in the States..
Up with People really made my stay so meaningful from 67 thru 69.
Does anyone have this halftime show video available. I sure like to watch it on a TV screen.
