Lupes just an extreme pacifist which is alright by ontology and its standards. He just doesn't want to praise the military, etc and it would go against pacifism, the dude probably has a strict mindset in which his philosophy does not enable him to do that.
I can't even believe lupe & talib showed up for this non-sense. Having an illuminati puppet (bun B) running an ethics conference is like having george bush running a conference on political ethics
to go to the middle east & follow orders from the president on down thru congress to the officers on the ground to the Non commissioned officers. Lupe Fiasco I respectfully disagree with what yu have said. You say you have done shows but you don't know really what the troops go thru. PTS is huge cuz the soldiers coming home go thru hell.
Yo he ain't the 1 in the service to make a living in this shitty ass economy and yeah the military pays the bills but u gotta follow orders if that means you have to kill or be killed and yes sometimes accidents happen unintended civillian casualties take place. But to say not to support our troops really upsets me cuz these 18-19 year old kids are the ones risking everything
yo did anybody notice that the dude who asked the question said "its not common knowledge, but a lot of people know about it"...i dont think that guy is qualified to ask a question
OMG u people are morons, his point was to make people question the excuses the US and NATO give for bombing WHERE EVER they say there goin to bomb, libya was just an example.
He didn't answer the question!!! LOL The guy asked about hiphop and ethics not the gov't and politics. He was definitely beating around the bush. I bet the so called American "murders" listen to hiphop right before they go out and "murder" ppl SMH I guess he and his hiphop colleagues make the sound tracks!!!
Yes the reaction to the Arab Spring of the US government has been, to say the least, disappointing. Other countries deserve to be backed at least morally as well. As for the Libyans, they were protesting peacefully at 1st but facing the violence from the Qaddafi regime they had no choice but to fight back and DEFEND themselves. The intervention was a necessity. Without the intervention all of the people of Benghazi would have been SLAUGHTERED for having the nerve to stand up to their suppressor.
how is what he is saying wrong? what about the child that joins the military b/c he has money thrown in his face and never really gets what war is about? or how the gov't uses us a sheep for their own agendas and slaughter? yet the gov't won't do a damn thing to help those truly in need in our own country. his point was how we define right and wrong based upon how we have been conditioned in society.
When someone is attacking you, you have a right to self defence. but if you are the aggressor, like america in afghanistan, libya, pakistan, yemen, somalia and iraq, that is murder.fyi, the war on terror is bullshit to the fullest.
@nem700 wait i dont know if it sounded like i was supporting the war in Iraq, Afghanistan and any other countries bcuz i dont but my mom was in the military untill recently..she was lucky enough to not get deployed but from what i got from lupe was being in the military = being a murder, but like i said maybe i misunderstood what lupe was saying.
Lupe is pointing out the fact that when the West started to bomb Gaddafi, it was to protect armed rebels. There's no disputing the fact that they started out unarmed and peaceful.
anyone confused as to the point of Lupe's comments....LISTEN AGAIN! He isn't actually saying it's wrong to bomb qaddafi.....he's speaking on the hypocrisy of the U.S. govt.
Now, as for his comments about the soldiers, i understand his point of view but he is painting the SOLDIERS with the brush he should be painting the U.S. GOVERNMENT with.
the real point he is trying to make is why only bomb Libya as opposed to bombing Bahrain, Syria, and the others that are slaughtering innocent protesters? the only reason why the US hasnt intervened because those guys are the US puppets and they keep the US happy with oil. He is showing the double standard in US foreign policy. His statements are not ignorant but very eye opening.
what lupe says about libya is very ignorant and disappointing. u would think he would understand better the situation of the oppressed. and if he actually followed what was going on in libya, he would realize that qaddafi clear militarized the peaceful protests.. the people prefer and even tried to keep it peaceful..
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”
@mks989 No! You misunderstood completely incorrectly! Listen to the point he made at 2:28 carefully. He's making the point that innocent protesters are in many countries like Syria etc. yet the media doesn't show us much about it (because of the oil pipeline), if people saw what was happening the U.S. would have to intervene otherwise there's a double standard, yet when they showed us the innocent protesters on T.V. in Libya, they always showed them with AK 47's which made them look violent.
Lupe is just saying think about foreign policy and what the media is trying to justify. There is no justification for supporting one rebels cause and not anothers! why is the UN in Libya and not in Syria, Bahrain, The Congo, Zimbabwe.... there is always an agenda to murder indiscrimately.@mks989
@umarkhan999 Yea there's always an agenda. People are so stupid and gullible to think we do all this invading for the sake of the people oppressed. You gotta turn off the tv and think for yourselves.
@mks989 True some of them were legit peaceful protesters who advocated true reform in their government, but what you fail to acknowledge is that the United States Government helped put Gaddafi in power through a series of assassinations enacted through the CIA, and we subsidized him by giving him over $10 BILLION during his time in power to buy weapons and military technology from us. Lupe was trying to emphasize the absurdites and hypocrisies in US foreign relations/policy
@mks989 I think you are very wrong to criticise what Lupe says on Libya. He is completely right. The protesters were not completely peaceful. Where did all the gunz come from all of a sudden? They are rebels in the true sense of the word. Those in Yemen and Bahrain are true peaceful protesters , No guns ; but they are killed and the US /NATO/France and UK dont do shit. Where is the UN to pass a resolution on Yemen or Syria or Bahrain. All is a bunch of bullshit.
@kempess82 r u serious? did u not follow what happened in libya also? like lupe, u need to research n truly understand what happened before you make ridiculous claims. its an insult to all those who died peacefully in the first days. gaddafi was the most violent in his reaction to peaceful protesters because he is not a peaceful man. the people responded by taking over his barracks to get weapons to defend themselves from his violence. only after they took over the barracks, they got GUNS!
@kempess82 DUDE I AM from Libya i had to leave because Gaddafi soldiers came into my house and kicked us out. protesters started walking in the streets saying that they want Gaddafi to leave and he shoot fire on us first. What do u want us to do site there and watch our brothers and sisters die NO we fight for OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS.
"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”
People need to realize its NOT about SPECIFICALLY Gaddafi hes just putting in an example... while i MAY not know every little thing about the war (if it is 1 now) i DO know what lupes trying to get across... Try listening again and NOT focusing on the libya part and more of politically ok and less morally wrong but yea WTF this was supposed to be about HIP HOP o_o
i disagree about the war and murdering of the innocents, throughout the history we saw how war is not the answer..it has worked for some countries and that should been an example for other countries..
I've never listened to Poop Fiasco, but now I shall make it my mission not to & make sure no Free Libyan ever does.
It's laughable when he is speaking and reaches an epiphany about the 'AK47s' - completely disregarding the month-long beginning of the PROTEST where men, young adults, and kids were protesting Gaddafi's concentration-camp-rule and were shot down with 14.5MM Machine Guns (ANTI-AIRCRAFT: HUGE BULLETS - RIPS HUMANS TO PIECES) and SNIPERS and TANKS! Really?? Quite the FIASCO, fiasco.
@BarcaFeb17 man you are really ignorant... lupe is not trying to antagonize the Libyan people. if you ever listen to his music its all about peace, and positive messages.
@solis176 Well, that's some positive message he gave us.
The last thing I want to hear is some privileged kid talk down to us like we are the cause of a problem; while at the same time I am seeing and hearing my people get cut down like sheep at slaughter for saying the word "freedom" holding nothing but cellphone cameras for weeks - Where was his moral compass then? I assure you it is not me that is ignorant; but this pretend-human-rights 'fiasco'.
Do these guys have only have a 1 month memory span? 2 months ago, we DID have peaceful protests, and we were shot with 14.5 mm Anti-Aircraft bullets! What do we do? Just sit there like Ghandi and take it? Fuck no. We stand up like some men and defend ourselves. The guns we have are mainly the weapons we TOOK from the government and defected soldiers on our side. And the "plane" that lupe speaks of was shot down on MARCH 19 to DEFEND Benghazi
What did you think the ethics of hip hop were.....? Lupe is just saying think about foreign policy and what the media is trying to justify. There is no justification for supporting one rebels cause and not anothers. why is the UN in Libya and not in Syria, Bahrain, Yemen The Congo, Zimbabwe.... there is always an agenda to murder indiscrimately. I'm sure protests in Libya have justification but why is the UN there, why spur violence and suffering. Divide and conquer ring any bells? @afaraj
What we as the people are to do is to then try to understand what would make Lupe make such a statement, and then intellectually discuss the how and why of neither extreme being 100% true in all cases, but also how and why either may be true in some cases, and which other cases fall somewhere in between. Generalizations about the soldiers aside, he makes a very valid point in saying that many things that are politically correct are arguably morally wrong.
Yes, it's a generalization on Lupe's behalf. But he's saying it in that way to be concise and direct and to make his perspective easy to see at first glimpse due to the fact that what he's saying is an extreme. It's radical insofar as it's very different from the mainstream perspective: which is that all soldiers are to be honored regardless. Lupe gives the extreme at the other end of the spectrum, that all soldiers are murderers.
At first they were protesters not using violence, then once Gaddafi started killing them they began to gather arms. Arms were acquired also from Gaddafi's forces along side others. Lupe denounces murdering, though I'm curious to know if he deems it necessary or not. The way he's talking, I imply that he partially doesn't agree with what soldiers do -protect ones people, and assets.
Lupe can be the first to die a martyr when the Japanese advance their bombings into mainland U.S. and not Hawaii..
@TheApparentHead I'm not even going to pretend that I'm some kind of an expert on international affairs, because I certainly am not. But my question to you would be this: Wouldn't you consider the intent of these soldiers before you label them all "murderers"? Could it be that this isn't so black and white and that you would be guilty of an over-generalization if you were to label them all in such a manner? And what about cops or doctors that specialize in abortions? Are they murderers too?
He also claims that soldiers are murderers and murder is wrong. Murder is, by definition, wrongful killing. Therefore, he's begging the question. Are soldiers really murderers? Don't get me wrong, I really like all the music I've heard of Lupe's, but if you're going to make such controversial statements, you better be ready to support them.
At 4:21 Lupe says, "Most things that are politically right are morally wrong."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he only gave one example...
In addition, I feel like he didn't even answer the question at hand. The question was, "How do you hold rappers accountable when they're wrong?" and Lupe responds with, "How do we hold soldiers accountable for being murderers?" Red herring, maybe?
@thedreamisreal7 No, its just going back to the real question of what is right and what is wrong. How do you know when rappers are doing something wrong when "wrong" is such an ambiguous and twisted thing?
@BXKilla85 I definitely see what you're saying. Personally, I don't subscribe to such a subjective version of morality, but as I've already stated, sometimes things are not as black and white as we'd like to believe.
