i keep coming back to sarah's version of this classic. it doesn't get better than this. i love the 'playful' version on the 'gershwin live' album, but this is heaven. the understated emotion grabs you.
I agree with so many others that Ella is a great touchstone on songs like this. Ella has such a beautiful and somehow simple sophistication, and is rightfully a legend. It's just that Sarah has that something 'extra'. When the end of the world comes, I choose Sarah to sing to me without hesitation.
I remember listening to this as a kid on my parents big console stereo. Sarah Vaughn, Sinatra, Ella Fitgerald, Dinah Washington. I'll always love the standards.
Yeah, I had someone watching over me...taking notes, judging, then wacking me over the head with my faults...you can keep him, thanks. I'll watch over my own self.
This song is soul-deep and I have to admit. it makes me tear every single time I hear it... (Sassy has that effect on me....wow....would love to have seen her perform live.....)....I guess I'm a true to the bone romantic who loves happy endings....

If you loved this version check out any live version by Sarah during the 70s. I saw one on PBS. Majestic.

I thought Ella's version was my favorite. But after hearing this one about ten times....it's tough! Beautiful and unique talents...either way.

This song has been covered by so many great singers. There are many great versions, Frank Sinatra's and Ella Fitzgerald's are just two fine examples.
I love this one. It may just be my favorite.
