The first "slapper" was Larry Graham (of Sly and the Family Stone and later, Graham Central Station). Larry played in a trio w/ his mother in Stonestown and in order to make the sound more robust, he started "slapping" the bass. Jack would have seen Larry and picked up the idea from him.
I have never seen nor heard Jack Blades play slap bass before, but man.....he's DAMN good at it! But, I have to admit....he's the reason I use a thumb pick when I play bass....he is THE MOST underrated front man in RnR history....along with Ed Roland of Collective Soul too.
Sorry to hear that Max passed away. Over the years I have met Jim Pugh, Jack Blades, Brad Gillis and just recently met Jerry Martini and expressed to each of them my love for the group. I agree with the rest of the comments, it's a shame that the bass and drum solos are missing and Jim's dance. Jack was such an awesome slapper. I asked him backstage at a Night Ranger show why he doesn't slap anymore and he said "times change"
There is probably more video out there of Rubicon. I saw Max Haskett playing with David Martin's House Band some years back and he said he'd send me a copy of his collection of videos. I didn't hear from him for several months and then was shocked to learn that he'd passed away. If you check out the album from this concert, there's two more songs (which aren't on either of their two "official" albums).
FINALLY!!! Thank you soooo much for posting this. This single performance has been stuck in my head forever. I love you for this...Ehh...I love you anyway :D
I just wonder where the rest of the footage can be found. dfung60 is right about Blades and the bass. Flea and Claypool couldn't hold a match to Blades.
SOOOOO disappointing that Jack's bass solo and Greg Eckler's drum solo were but out. Rubicon is still one of my favorite all-tme band and I still listen to their stuff regularly.
Awesome! I remember all the Cal Jam broadcasts back in the 70's and this was one of the true nuggest of a great show. Jack Blades was an awesome slapper, something that didn't show up much in the rest of his career.
@dfung60 I agree. Jack Blades early in his career showed that he was a great bass player. Unfortunately, he and Brad Gillis went from the hard funk of Rubicon to the corporate rock of Night Ranger.

I wish somebody would put the bass solo up - Jack Blades was the most amazing thing I had ever seen when this was on TV.
