interesting comment youve got to write the songs?? seeing as hugh wrote all the best ones and they chucked him out/pissed him off!!! ironic what have they done since hugh???? fuck all
@goodbyetoulouse77 Very well said my friend. Hugh WAS The Stranglers. Those tracks that MADE them in those early years, will always be The Stranglers to me.
roberts was alright, but he didnt write good songs like cornwell thats all. as a singer, he's ok. i prefer cornwells solo stuff to the stranglers since 1990 but their last 2 albums together wer crap anyway. neither are very consistent anymore and while id love to hear one more album, I think there best work is long gone. However the stranglers still sound great and cornwell still has ability now and then. would prob be good for both to hook up or at least shake hands!
Baz is a good musician and singer in his own right but agreed Roberts was out of place. If Hugh came back now and made it a 5 piece then we could all die happy.
agreed, terrible. I think JJ is a much better vocalist (though not as singular as Hugh, obviously), he should've taken over. not that it would have change much, they were dead and buried anyways
hugh cornwell had little musical input, he had to have a second guitarist live because he couldnt sing and play at the same time, not to mention he had tons of effects on his voice. I think its a little insulting to JJ Burnell and Greenfield to judge the entire band by their vocalist.
I'm still a huge Stranglers fan, I've seen them at least once just about every year since I first saw them in '78, but from this comment you obviously know nothing about the Stranglers.....
you don't know what you're talking about. hugh cornwell was the major songwriting force in the stranglers. oh, and john ellis was 2nd guitarist for the final hugh-era tour only. it seems hugh managed quite well without him for the previous 16 years he was in the band.
I undesrtand, but it is impossible because it is 10 years now. I have VHS copy of that only. But I guess that on Betacam original is same problem - interview and music are mixed up to both channels.

And I would say Hugh has never been the same without the entire band. The band as a whole made some really interesting sound back in their hey day.
They still sound good now but they're not nearly as dynamic as they're used to..

Not judging by the vocalist, but by the lyrics. Cornwell wrote great lyrics.

Paul Roberts was a terrible replacement singer for Hugh Cornwell.
polycera 3 years ago 3
the moment hugh left the band, they lost it, the replacement singer can't sing

Agree too !!!
This singer must sing pop !

No I disagree with the comments below-the Stranglers were and still are the BEST BAND EVER! and no one could replace you JJ!
