He is not as good as you all here think. Look at his facial expression - very tense all the time and this is very serious mistake. Unneeded tension of facial muscles is a sure sign of unnecessary tension in the body. If somebody is so tense he should not practice with hard (yang) weapon like sai at all.
His performance is amazing! The ki, the kime and the atami is incredible! I wonder, how can open karate styles compare this to their creative or musical weapons forms?
I agree tat there are things that should remain secret, but those that hold secrets also sell videos at places like karate depot. While the movement need to be translated for some fold, I too think its easy enough to find sources to watch. But as it relates to Sai handling some seem to think that watching and imitating a female superhero is the way to play.
I don't see the need for secrecy. Give someone a knife and he can either gut fish, paint, eat an apple or stab an old lady 300 times. The evil comes not from the blade but from the handle. Whether it's sai, knife, fork, chisel or sharpened screwdriver, it's evil lies in it's use. To say that secret techniques could be learned from watching youtube is like saying I learned Karate from watching 'Karate Kid'. In an interactive class, a sensei sees our mistakes and corrects us. Vids are just an aid.
This is a great kata. I have kind of an off subject question though. What are the best quality of sai that I could buy? I'm looking for a new pair and was leaning towards Kensho but I really want a SUPER nice pair. I have unbalanced cheap sai and i'm ready to upgrade.
@lukkiop im not an expert by far and if ur question was answered im sorry but i would choose one with modest length if you are actually going to hurt somone with them but if not im sure you can perfect oyur technique with shorter ones. mine go from the the tip of the finger to roughly half an inch past my elbow. thats baleced for me but it varied per person.as for quailty i say just get steel ones from any company that professes in selling them. i got min for like 20$ from my sensei
Where most Karate teachers go wrong nowadays is they fail to realize that we are living in an age where "secret" techniques can be learned by simply turning on the internet and going on google.com. You want to withhold "secret" techniques? That is fine, I will just walk down the road and pay someone else to teach me. Tradition ruled long ago, today the all mighty dollar rules. Karate teachers should remember that point.
@victorwang777 bro, good luck learning techniques on the internet. Maybe below dan level, you can "copy" movements but the subtleties must be taught. the trained eye can tell if you learned the technique or simply doing the movement. the opponent will also let you know real quick.
@victorwang777 I think you'll find that actually where many Karate (and any other martial art) instructors go wrong is that they share your point of view. They believe that you can learn techniques just from watching Youtube videos or just paying someone to teach you. You can only learn real technique (not to mention the culture, history and philosophy) from experienced sensei who have dedicated themselves to their art and are willing to impart all of that knowledge to you.
I agree with Jesse. He was stepping back to replace that missing part. It says, he purposely drop that part. But, still people can film his kata when he was performing at tournament. haha.. No video policy hasn't worked :((
No wonder he is a champion, awesome performance.

I am a menber of Bunbukan.
Jesse `s comment is right. Sometime Mamoru&Nakamori sennsei use a contracted kata. they do`t forget it.
