@ItaiMiller if you lived in Cleveland in the 70's you where always around your radio at this time just kicking back and burning one just for this song.
0:00-6:39 brain was swollen from music assault, 6:40-7:34 every hole on head blood began to gush out; 7:35-8:03 brain matter replaced flowing blood; 8:04-8:28 spine shattered....this song fucked me up!
I heard that sososostoned....LOL I have an incomplete version on here. Gotta get more memory for my camera and loop it better. I guess it wasn't bad for a first time but i kept playing cause i didn't know it had stopped recording so its not that much. Next time gonna practice some before i record it.
the best live version recorded has not shown up here on youtube yet, all i know is that it was done in ATL in the seventies and everything was done so good the sound and recording was done right i know the video is out there so i keep searching, it has been released on a greatest hits cd already
Thanks for posting...this brings back some very fond memories :)
Before hearing this song back in the 70's, I had though that the greatest guitar solo was anything by Ace Frehely....then I heard this, and it blew my mind.
this is the best guitar solo ever. i saw this video about 4 years ago and it made me want to start playing guitar. now...after 4 years i see it again and i still think that this is the best guitar solo i've ever heard in my life
Please excuse my ignorance, but originally did Eddie Hazel play Maggot Brain or did Michael Hampton or was it both with Eddie on lead? This song almost shouldnt be called a song, it is a mood all by itself. It is a daydream or maybe a nightmare, or soul or feeling but calling it a SONG doesnt embody the power conveyed in this piece. incredible!!
man if dont listent to this shit every day.. then ur not normal.. ive been listen to this song everyday since it was put up on youtube.. all the versions... i have to, or my day wont be complete... shits godly..
Thanks. I was going to post the same info until I read your reply. Folks need to understand that there are a lot of great guitars past & present that aren't Gibson or Fender.
thats M. Hampton playin in the video. its Eddies song tho. the only reason Michael Hampton is known for maggot brain is becuz when eddie had to leave the group, G. Clinton needed a new lead guitar and M. Hampton got hired on the spot becuz he played the original maggot brain note for note.
Kinda some heavy funk to suggest to a newbie..I think S"tanding On The Verge of Getting It On" or "One Nation Under A Groove" would be a better choice and then get deeper!
Friend of mine let a female newbie borrow Electric Spanking of War Babies...needless to say she returned it the next day saying, "WTF was that??!!"
you can't mess with realness of this solo. You can't doubt the emotion he put into this. You can practice and regurgitate what you hear, but you can just feel the soul in this song. I love it because of how beautiful it is, not necessarily because of how complicated it is.
This is a guitar song hence lots of players can and have torn it up. this is a spotlight solo epic......but I have to say Hampton's tone doesn't blow me away, eddie hazel's did.....at any rate it's gold. one of rocks truely great guitar work-outs.
actually its referring to eddie hazel's maggot riddled brain from the copious amounts of drugs he did...george's brother doesn't have anything to do with this song...george told eddie to play like he just found out his mom died, then half way through this amazing solo he told him that his mother was in fact alive...the song tells the story, you can hear it. listen to the one i posted, it has eddie and hampton in it.
yea its also a tribute to georges brother they walked in his apartment and saw him dead on the floor where he had been lying for 2 weeks hence the title
fuck.... im speachless right now, that is by far one of the most....beautiful, straight from the soul things ive ever heard in my life! sounds good cause he is improvising on an E Penatonic
hahahaha you do know that the "idiot" who whistled wasz George Clinton, right? Listen to all their live stuff; Clinton used a series of whistles he would use for their live shows to direct the musicians through songs, like by telling them when to improvise or wrap things up
I know of PF and maggot brain. But this version with michael hampton is just off the scale. Im looking for this specific version with M hampton. If you can sort me out thanks!

The Live version of Maggot Brain is on the 1978 album, "One Nation Under A Groove" by Funkadelic. The Studio version is on the 1971 album, "Maggot Brain"
Michael Hampton has not got the credit he deserved over the years with pfunk. George would call him out during many of the live shows to do a lead solo. Be it Maggot Brain, Cosmic Slop, Dr. Funkenstien, Bop Gun, Red Hot Mama, Comin Around the Mountain and many others, Mike was up for the challenge. He was also an excellent rythm guitar player holding down the rythm during most of the live shows.
Ya he is a really good guitarist, its just he plays way tooo technically. Thats one thing that Eddie had over Mike, Eddie played from his soul. Every note he played had emotion.
Youtube assholes click dislike to get attention and take away from this masterpiece. I post it to facebook once a week.
