What's funny is that the people, who consider themselves "liberal" today, are not liberal at all, nor are they progressive. Real liberals, like Thomas Jefferson, are classical-liberals and are for absolute freedom both economically and socially. We have had freedom for about 200 years give or take, before that we had completely centralized totalitarian rulers for 7 thousand years; wanting to go back to that is neither liberal nor progressive.

I agree and great point. The only reason public school systems are even around is because the government won't let them fail. They would fail miserably in the free market if released and something much better would take its place. Nevertheless, we continue saying "It's for the children" or "It's for the elderly" when it hurts them more than helps them.

It is not a direct democracy, is not representative, it is not centralism.
Why? The idea have to be distinct there, and that harsh.
The form of governement in USA also have to be distinct Federal centralized, since USA is a decentralized federation by the mean of the constitution. So, the good term should be a federal constitutional republic, but that a pain in the ass.

I like to think if myself as a financial conservative, but a social liberal. The public school system:throwing more money at it isn't going to do much more. Public health care isn't really feasible. The fact that the government is bailing out Bear-Sterns..'nuff said. Still, it doesn't mean I have to like that slimy little shit. can only speak for myself, but I don't want the government running my life. I've seen what a 'conservative' government goes and I can only say: Leave me the hell alone.

Tsukishijin: Bush is a watered down conservative, McCain even more so. They are both fairly liberal and have comprised their values away and are under the idealistic spell of liberalism. As bad as they are I don't think they are as bad as Hillary or Obama. I don't think that the US will soon fall, no matter who is elected. The US still possessess astounding political influence and power in conventional warfare, so the apocalypse is not upon us.
I don't mind Obama because even though he's full of shit, he's decent at hiding it. I think McCain because he's at least competant, and between him and Hillary, I choose him.
I don't see either ignoring every scrap of intelligence before invading being insanely worried about apeasing zealots in any form.

The flaw in the argument is there is socializing tendency on both the right and the left or maybe I should call it creeping governmentism. It is really about concentration of wealth and power. This tendency exists in every society and usually groups that try to resist this concentration are marginalized. The Republicans like to talk about small government and personal responsibility but they like to concentrate power in the hands of the military and president.

durco01: I witnessed and participated in school desegregation. The vast majority of Republicans supported the desegregation and many of us marched in support of desegregation. Whereas a disproportionate amount of liberals protested desegregation. For the most part the protests were along party lines, for the most part the Republicans supported desegregation, whereas for to most part most of the people protesting desegregation were liberals.

One of the first small Japanese islands that we invaded that had a significant civilian population, the women and children were so brainwashed that they were jumping off cliffs to keep from getting liberated. Hitler like many fascist dictators used pseudoscience and pseudo religion to try represent himself as a messiah like figure. There are similar types of tactics practiced in almost all dictatorships, communist and socialist countries that are used to promote fascism and bigotry/hatred. It's not as bad of a problem in the US, however it is growing in the US at an incredible rate.

In the past it usually has been more subtle, however lightly it is becoming more overt and extreme as the indoctrination becomes to be considered more politically correct.
