  • two people are fucking fagg0ts

  • two people are fucking faggots

  • I wondered why he wasn't playing his Gibson F5.

  • Beautiful... jam bands at the best

  • How can anyone not like this??

  • j ' adore ; ... et leurs couennes aussi

  • most awesome performance on youtube thanks

  • Excellent!!

  • Warner Music has just issued a spectacular 6 DVD set (11 hours) of Vitaphone shorts which includes several selections by Apollon. Only $40.

  • Great set - zhanks. Where did you find that for $40 ?

  • Excellent !!!!

  • C'est l'excellence même , génial;

  • This is well epic.

(I thought it was a Martin Mandolin...)

  • @WillShade: That is definitely a Lyon & Healy mandolin. One of my students has one exactly like it. (I am a mandolin teacher, btw). I've seen them before.

  • Great video!

  • This is my favorite version of Sweet Sue.

  • Aw man and he's playing a Lyon and Healy mando! How sweet is that!??!

  • Do you mean the leader? He hits some low notes near the end that indicate it's a mandola rather than a mandolin.

  • @dbadagna : Dave Apollon is playing a Lyon & Healy mandolin. He later played a Gibson F-5.

  • @mandoalbee

Thanks, how does that explain the notes he hits near the end that are below the mandolin's low G?

  • @mandoalbee

Near the end he goes down to a low D, four notes below the mandolin's lowest note of G. I think he is playing a mandola, not a mandolin.

  • @dbadagna: You're right, it's a Lyon & Healy Mandola! The look just their mandolins just a little bigger. At first I thought maybe they were just "syncing" to a recorded track with Apollon faking it on mandolin. When I looked at the closeups of him from straight on, I could tell that the neck and body are bigger than a mandolin and the low notes are on the C string. So, definitely a mandola. How do you like that. I found this because I'm learning this song on mandolin to play with friends. Nice.

  • Thats my great-great uncle for ya. Thanks for posting this dude =)

  • @Louisnodell92 That might be my grandfather at 37 playing the black colored guitar. Do you have names of the musicians?

  • @Louisnodell92 That's cool to see someone you know in an old film.

  • terrific- thanks for posting!!!

  • Sublim

  • Is that a Tipple being played by the seated gentleman?

  • Which seated gentleman?

  • If you mean the tiny mandolin-like instrument at 0:47, I think that's a Philippine "bandurria," an instrument of Spanish origin that is used in the Filipino "rondalla" ensemble.

  • awesome video great to see. the best mandolin player of all time.

  • Dave Appolon,

Was one of the best Ukranian-Russian performers and mandolin player in the North America.

  • @RomaniMusic : Yes, I'm glad you pointed out "Ukranian". Kiev is the capitol of The Ukraine. I've known Ukrainian immigrants and they don't like to be referred to as Russians.

  • Great stuff. Any more like it?

  • So that's the great Dave Apollon. I've heard alot about him, but have never seen him play. Pretty cool stuff.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I'm afraid there are, unfortunately, very few existing videos of Dave Apollon.

  • WOW!!!!! BEAUTIFUL.. really really classic... who posted this video...your an AMAZING fellow... this is really great..

  • lucky show it's not a Dobro, it's a National tricone. Sounds smoother, less buzzy than a Dobro.

  • why do they always clip off the end!!!?

  • Vmuy bueno apollon!!!que maestro!

  • I am without speech!

  • The little instrument has 14 tuning pegs, 14 strings. The "steel" is a Dobro, right?

  • Is it sol hoopi on the steel ?

  • How about that giant bass guitar? I've seen a couple of those on eBay that went for a fortune.

  • Who is the steel player?

  • The other mando like thing is a taro patch or tiple, I think.

  • The other mando like thing is a bandurria, a 12 string mandolin from Spain.

  • Hot doggie!!

    Cooking on the mandolin!!

  • Wow this is amazing for Something that was made way back in 1930s. Nice tune, too.

  • ..And, all the coolest instruments- the square neck Tricone, the Nick Lucas guitar, and Dave's Lyon and Healey A!

  • That's what I call entertainment! Dave Apollon was one of cleverest vaudevillians of the whole era. He was a man with real talent, musicianship, comedic timing, and a firm grasp of American humor (he was born in Russia). Entertainment reviewers of the 1930s couldn't think of enough positive adjectives to rate his stage act. Fortunately for us, good samples of his routine survive on a few film shorts.

  • great music

  • bellissimo....great!

  • woooooooooooo!

  • W W W OO W W W !! WW WW O O WW WW !! W W OO W W !!

  • Wow! so that is what it looks like. I've had the recording for years. never saw the images that go with it. Marvellous, merciless swing! Thanks a lot

  • Wonderful Hal thanks !!
