It was invented (from what I read) by a German working in France who'd read books on the New World by an Italian, Latinised the Italians first name (Amerigo) and called the southern continent and the Caribbean islands "America" in his honour.

Oh my God, do Americans actually believe that 'The office' was originally American? If they do, they can go a f**k themselves. Im sorry, but I feel very strongly about this. @snottyxraygirl Because America is such a large continent with so many states that us Brits can only really take a stereotypical view on them. But because England is but a diminutive island, we seem to expect that Americans somehow know all about us and that we don't all attend public school and shoot pheasants (which I do both of, but thats not the point). And yes, there are many brilliant American shows, many of which aren't shown in the UK as our sense of humour is different.

@elvisfan22 It's called appeasement, our PM Nevile Chamberlain used this idea as he knew that we didn't have the strength to fight another world war and so used this time to re-build and that he could control Hitler. Funny thing is, was that when the Germans advanced into the de-militarised zone in the boarder next to France, Hitler gave specific orders that if they were stopped by the French forces that they were to retreat without question.

I don't think there is any statement about Americans that you could make which would really include "ALL" since we are so diverse, having various levels of education, cultural exposure, ethnic backgrounds, etc. I watch as much British tv as American and have been to London twice. @XAwesomerockerX you do understand what primitive means dont you? its like saying something is under developed... and just to point it out, england was part of the united kingdom which had an empire that spread over nearly a quarter of the world. and all even before the usa was even thought of as a concept

@Halonoobist First, you shouldn't even bother arguing with that troll. Trolls come in all nationalities, including both the British and Americans. Secondly, as for talking about "we used to have a huge empire" that's rather like saying "My family used to have a lot of money and we had a huge place in London, but now we are poor and live in a small flat in Essex." Not exactly a strong argument. And we won't even go into the infringement on civil rights perpetrated by both the UK and the US.

@germanamericanable yeah fair point i was just saying that theres a huge history so to say we are primative is quite a short sighted opinion. and about the intellect of humour i dont mean to call you stupid, you just need a level of understanding which you dont get unless youve grown up in England. for instance have you ever watched any of the Monty python films?
