  • he is such a genius... =)

  • i like the way he start his talk, cos he was attract me to listen what will his going to said!!

  • this man stinks!

  • @paulineAA why? he's such an amazing man and designer

  • he is brilliant men...

  • Awesome

  • This guy is incredibly clever. French people are real philosophers, so great

  • cocaine is a helluva drug

  • some good points (which are partially mentioned in the comments) and some bad points as well...

I didn't get what he means by " we are the god" ... if he literally means what he said I disagree cuz as he said we are limited. the ideology of God is that God isn't limited. It's possible to change the definitions like to say God is the powerful one. but it just cuz confusion and sometimes insults some people.

  • @khashayar8913 I think what he's saying is that God as a concept, is something we've traditionally used as an answer to questions we didn't know the answers to. Now more than ever we're able to get answers to (or look for) things ourselves. We want to know more about the universe, so we look at it, and explore it, rather than just settle on the "word of God" that there's something out there. We want to know WHAT is out there, or even if it IS in the first place.

  • zis iz awezome!

  • he is so spontaneous, i loved his demonstration of lighting creating life :')

  • "Ze desaaaaaign muzzt be goudd"

  • fatasctic ...

  • WOW !!!

  • 也有中文翻譯喔~

  • @GrudgyDiablo

You obviously don't know who this 'douche' is or what he has done or what he has achieved!

  • is there english version or subtitles for this ?

  • Come again?

  • I was waiting for him to have a heart attack :|

  • My ears are bleeding

  • Haha, this guy is such a cool dude.

Starck, like many other speakers on TED, i would like to meet, not to discuss with. Just to listen.

  • crazy guy but brilliant... absolutely a genius

  • love this french accent it is so funny!!!... today to not do it is more positive than do it :)))

  • BULLSHIT. everyone has a blank piece of canvass, the story is finished at any point. Stark is grasping for an excuse to continue because he fears the blank canvass.

  • @mnewlyn What do you mean whit a blank canvas?

  • @Dumass88 I mean that no of us has an obligation to 'finish this story' as Starck puts it. He wants to finish the story because he is scared of the blank first page of a new story. He is old, and that is what happens when you think like an old person. "Our story" can end now, this second, if we want. Each of us is responsible for the timing; the story can only end on an individual level.

  • @mnewlyn Somehow i don't think that i what he meant. Although his english is far from perfect, so who knows.

  • @Dumass88 what do you think he means?

  • @mnewlyn I think he refers to our species and all our problems ahead. I think he means that mankind have to unite to reasch our next evolutionary step and avoid killing our own species for short term gain.

  • @mnewlyn I believe what he's been trying to say is that we are not done yet, we shouldn't think that we reached the top of our potential, there is always room to evolve and mutate and expand so we should give our children and the next generations the room to advance without the troubles or mistakes of the past. Man looks at life on Earth from a narcissistic viewpoint, all for the personal gain, immediate satisfaction of needs, wars for current issues (the ups and downs between light and dark)

  • @kyproula88 but what is really important is to look at our place on Earth as another point in the billions of years to follow and that we should progress having in mind that we are fighting not only for the person, the country, the civilisation, but for the whole species, mankind in general.

  • I love his accent, makes me laugh everytime. He's a genius on design, though.

  • Starck could say anything, and in that lovable accent, and with his adorable humility, people would find him compelling.

Add to it that this fellow is brilliant and wise, and you have a man in demand.

  • This guy is freaking awesome.

  • i liked the analogy between different ways of walking and thinking

  • What a fucking clown!!!!

  • @zorg610 He's not a clown, he's just smarter than you.

  • @zorg610 you're the one

  • Nice concept!

  • horrible language

  • @Michb3ck And here he is breaking the conventions of design, speaking at TED and you sitting at home watching him. Oh, and how's your French?

  • wow!

  • Achtung Bangkok Calling!

    Does Starck need captions/ subtitles?

    Yes.

Even the Mumbai Indians and S'poreans

have captions when interviewed on BBC.

Yes captions. 'Cause their beuatiful accdents are so hard to understand.

  • Wow! Check my designs on youtube:

    jeroen wesselink

  • I like it...

  • Good design is a process that takes vision and incorporates the ideas of the designer, things they've picked up along the way in life. He rants, he even tells you in the beginning that he doesn't speak well. I still appreciate his ideas and being a designer is dealing with being misunderstood most of the time, because your work speaks for itself. TEDTALKS isn't for everyone apparently. Some people are a little thick and learning new things isn't an option for them. Cheers!

  • I like his ideas, but I'm not quite sure about the things he designs

  • i wish him would be a muslim :D

  • pls put caption closed English. I am deaf.. pls pls

  • @sevpipien I believe you can find the transcript on the TED website itself. I haven't checked specifically for this video, but I know many have them.

  • @sevpipien check here!: blog(dot)ted(dot)com/2007/12/04/starck/

  • he's a genius as designer, but as a speaker..., was terribly hard to understand him

  • the bigger comes thicker and thicker!

I mean how will an ipod nano look in 10 years keeping the same options?

it will come thicker, maybe his size will be divide by 3, ...

it's still design but I really think that one day technology will permit us to have that's what I was tryign to point

I know there will always be designers, we need them I was exagerating a lil bit, i'm not crazy

  • caceta, que lixo de ingrêis!

    não entendi lhufas!

sou nota máxima no TOEFL com meu poor english.

    vaipa!

  • Microsoft don't know anything about uncluttered interfaces that they haven't learned from Apple's success, that's why they can't sell the Zune.

Nevertheless, if you can't see the amount of design that has gone into the products in the video you mentioned, then you are a lost cause.

  • I only see beautiful interfaces, and a lot of thick surfaces

and yes I know it's a project but microsoft or not, that's what I see when I'm talking about the future of design, these thick tactile surfaces with well designed interfaces are already here

  • So thick equal bad design? I think you're underthinking function and focusing on aesthetic.

  • nah I never said that sorry

  • It's all about WHEN you incorporate design into the process.

  • But the fact that it is so simple is purely BECAUSE apple have invested so much money into it's design. Look at the original iPod, then compare it with the current model. Jonathan Ive and his team have been working hard DESIGNING to make the interface as clean and simple as possible. The fact that the design is invisible is testament to the amount of design work that has gone into this product.

  • Philippe Starck

  • @poushk

That's hilarious, name one instance where technology has superseded design. Design and technology are not competitors, they are collaborators. Without design, our technology would be awkward and emotionless.

Good design is not simply making something look pretty after it has been fully developed technologically.

  • When I said design will be dead soon, I was talking about the minimalists lines of an ipod for exemple! I can draw just a cube with 3 buttons and sell it as an mp4 device.

Starck said himself, design is useless, yeah he really said that, he also said that he will stop design in two years, publicity stunt? I don't think so

  • Are you trying to say there is no design in the iPod? Minimalism isn't the absence of design, it's the absence of embellishment. Embellishment DOES NOT EQUAL design.

  • nah that's not what I was trying to say

its form is so minimalist you can't do it more simple...

check the video "Microsoft sustainability" that's all I got to say about this...

  • Atheist asshole. How dare he clown on someone else religion f him

  • At least he describes his claims

  • Continue to ramble on,so that all may know you mad

  • design will be dead soon, technology is killing it, i meanin a good way just like the oled technology (a screen on a surface as thick as paper!!)

  • You need design for technology.

Stop talking about things you don't know about.

  • haha I would be glad to show you my portfolio, and in the same time take look at yours.

  • @poushk i would be very glad to see yours! i've lost all my 3 years of foundation up til 1st year degree of work due to my hard disk crashed. to retrieve back will cost me few thousands. my parents would kill me. i even lost the design i did for starck. :/

  • i'm an architecture student, this semester, we were assigned 'client'. I got philippe starck as my client. We are to design a dwelling/habitat for our client. I have came up with Elegant, minimal and powerful for the concept of his dwelling after doing some research to try to understand Starck..

  • Interesting assignment

  • Phil Stark = Un Tosser

  • I graduated from a product design course with a BA and I have to say, its such an up its own arsehole subject. Loads of his designs are non-functional, superficial crap that shouldn't exist. He's a hypocrit if I ever saw one.

  • people who are famous but crazy They are called Genius. howver people who are Genius but unknown are called crazy....there is a mutant in craziness and there is genius in Mutant. maybe God is crazy? genius? creator?... maybe earth was mutant that cross the line...then became a life. mabe we crazy enough to say there is a God. thats wat i learned from him... n i would like to be called crazy.

  • Modest...too much? :)

  • If degs iss a cynicall and fantasy disaigneg... it is Stark himself! And He is pretty good at it. I do value the contribution of flamboyant irreverent designers such as Stark. But "entertrainment" design can only go so far. I find it hard to see the long term contribution that designers such as Stark could make not only to fashion, but to industry itself. He is actually one of the most arrogant designers I have heard.... even for a French man!!!!

  • I study Industrial Design and I admit I'm not a big fan of Starck and there is things I dont agree with him. But this was a very good speech, very funny, he shared is ideas. very good.

  • i was going to say the exact same thing. i'm just finishing my ID degree now :)

  • do you think there's a future in design?

  • We [designers] work FOR the future.

And design is about Fashion, graphics, products, etc etc

    so... absolutely.

  • i want to become an overall designer, specialized to car design, but the industry is going down now so i'm worried about it.

  • I see... well, this is a moment of crisis and in any moment will change completely, so... you should do what would you like to do.

do you like Design? Join the club!

  • i am Design! which club?

  • I also studied ID, I always enjoyed Starks communication through his work but today was the first time I actually heard him speak.

For all the stuff that is produced in this world I still don't understand why there is a shroud of mystery around the design profession.

  • THIS guy designed my watch huh? Well today, I have realized that there's hope for everyone

  • i love his watches too :D

  • my favorite quote, "No one is obliged to be a genius, but everyone is obliged to participate." Brilliant

  • loved it

  • Is that a surprise? No, I know beyond the shadow of any doubt there is God behind beauty and all of creation - it's the most fundamental point every one of those "genius" scientists, designers, and other professionals at TED miss so badly - the obvious intelligence behind the most complex and beautiful natural world including ourselves.

  • I'm sorry but I have to desagree: I'm not a beliver, I'm an atheist and I respect all kinds of religions. The fact that I found not right is that you have the tendendency to see God, or every other entity, in all the human achievements. You are not able to separate the two things: it doesn't mean that if a designer or an architect or a painter makes a great, beautiful and astonishing work that's because of God: it's just because of the person's ability and hard work.

  • Saying that God is behind behind beauty is disrespectful for the work of these people.

I'm not accusing or saying that you being a beliver, or for that matter anybody else being a beliver, is a bad thing!Just want to point that out, totally respect your ideas and belives.

  • I respect your point of view. However my statement below has nothing to do with disrespecting designers' work. Notice below I'm talking about the creation, i.e. the natural world, the VERY beautiful world from which these very designers take inspiration (ever seen Ross Lovegrove's work?) and give 0 credit to the source of all nature - God the Creator. I believe it was Sir Isaac Newton who said that he only needs to look at one finger to understand that God is behind its marvelous design.

  • regardless of all this, the simple fact remains that God is so many things to so many people. If some want to attribute design and existence to God/muse/etc., then so be it! same if people want to attribute it to their own talent and skill, again, so be it! in the end, we all are viewing the world through our own filters and lenses. I say this: bravo to those who are willing to think about these things, for their ideas give us inspiration to further ourselves, for better or worse.

  • And another perspective: "Pantheism" aka all the world and all the beauty of it, could be called a "god" meaning all the people are also part of this one "god" (- our very existance ). Then you could say "god's will" is the sum of activity of all that exists(including ours). I think atheists/religious people are essentially talking about the same thing but labling it slightly differently.. Its really pretty useless to disagree/agree in this debate, so lets just get over it and get on with it.

  • You clearly know neither the fundamentals of science nor the brutally primitive qualities of religion.

Describe your deity in natural terms and provide empirical evidence for his existence. Otherwise, your god is supernatural, and real or not, is not worth considering.

  • I agree. Look at how the religions all around the world look like. So many differences can't come from "God" not the same God anyway. That's a proof that God is basically a human creation related strongly to local culture. Which religion are we going to consider the "real" one is the problem for believers.

  • Wow, what a MAJOR dissapointment. The legendary design "genius" turnes out to be a godless evolutionary atheist, and preaching it too. How sad.

  • What, you thought to find God behind beauty?

  • Please, leave Jesus at the gates. Go to the God channel if you want a sermon.

  • Well you're free to do just that - and you have a pretty simple choice: either open your mind to the obvious intelligence in created things all around you, or remain the "God police" that you decided to play.

  • Did you thumb me down? I thumbed you up. So what's your favourite of god's great designs?

  • comedy classic!

  • I love you Philippe.

  • And may you thank America for choosing Obama.

    Reconsider your racism.

  • Philippe Starck is the Jesus of design! :)

  • @sweetandtasty he spread like poison yea

  • Philippe Starck is a genius. He is one of a kind. He is not the best designer, though he is charismatic. that is why he was chosen to be the French head of design for imperial courts.

  • i got a -7? wow people are stupid, does nobody know what sarcasm is these days?

  • Nobody wants namecalling and negativity like that. You want to be popular? Don't be sarcastic or aggressive.

  • Howdie, sexboywonder! Well, I lived in your "great" country for a while, and then left because I didn't like it! And yes, Americans are lazy, fat, stupid, and racist with a horrible taste of music. Sorry, I don't smoke anthing: never have, and never will. I don't drink Coke, either; I drink only green tea. I live happily in a nice, small, unpolluted European country. Satisfied?

  • you´re right! :-)

  • you are my idol!!!

    a bon entendeur salut

  • Les designers sont les philosophes d'aujourd'hui...

    Thank you Mr Starck

  • ma che lingua parla? :)

    I like him ;)

  • truly a genius!

  • nice and deep!

  • totaly himself, authentic!!!!

  • i understood everything...funny guy....

    loved the video

  • i cant hear completely what he says.. is there a subtitled version of this vid?

  • I disagree with him, though: when we have descended into the shadow of barbarianism is when we need art and beauty most of all. What else will inspire us to rise out of it into the light?

  • wish i could understand what hes saying..

  • heh

  • I LOVE THE FRENCH. beautiful people. love love love.

  • NOT THE BEST TIME?

(Dude, if you do not understand, go ahead google trad! :)

  • Interesting stuff! 5*

  • I am glad this was posted here on youtube.. because this is amazing.

  • OUTSTANDING !!!!!!

  • pretty good speech from a designer...

  • He is on the pulse of the current consciousness pervading the globe. I sensed this myself.

It is clear with are in a regressive couple of decades, this trend will continue. Yet regression brings re evaluation .

This will become more evident in the year 2012, when the 80's influence will become very very apparent.

  • why 2012? the aztec end of the world?

  • Mullets and Dallas re-runs.

"he is on ... this myself"

That was the most sickening thing I've read in some time.

  • By looking in the right direction (forward) and acknowledging our role as mere mutants in the history of the Earth, we can possibly create a civilization that is civilized. Beautiful.

  • I found the first minutes a little more small talk, he takes a while to get going to me, but in the end it's good.

  • very envisioning i recommed to watch

  • Funny guy. :)

  • The idea of giving each generation a clean slate to do what they want is a powerful one. Even one of the american founding fathers said that every generation should have its own revolution.

It is a shame that the rule of law tries desperately to force each generation into the status quo in almost slavery/servitude way. Break free and life the way you want to live.
