I am a Chinese American, I love Italy, Italy is the most beautiful country in the world! Beautiful country, beautiful people and the handsome Italian man I met on the train from Roma to Florence, I will always remember him as long as I live!
In 1938, Fermi won the Nobel Prize in Physics at the age of 37 for his "demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation, and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow neutrons".
Then arrive the "manatthan project" to build the atomic bomb witn Fermi in chief. This is official history..wikipedia for example. Bye.
Errata corrige: Fermi discovered atomic fission and not invented atomic fusion.
Fermi don't invented fusion. Chicago Pile (1942) was a fussion reactor. Fermi indeed played a crucial role in nuclear technology development, but not in fusion.
The theoretical foundations of fusion were worked out by Hans Bethe. The first appliance of that principle was due to the researchs of Edward Teller and Stanley Ulam in the late 40ies.
Thank you!:-)

The first atomic bomb was a German invention (not American).
However, Americans developed the hydrogen bomb first.
Please type "Ivy Mike"! (1952) Very cool detonation!

Atomic fusion was invented by enrico fermi in Italy..
