  • It's not like its the first time this has happened. Come together by the beatles . Lennon considered it a tribute to Chuck Berry. How many folk and blues songs have been covered or remade with no credit to the originals. who cares. music is like any art and has it's influences. many artists start off drawing or painting their own take on already existing art. evolution wouldn't exist if it started from scratch every time

  • Who cares, it's just one riff.

  • One of my teachers bashed Nirvana for "stealing" Killing Joke's riff. I came back and said Killing Joke "stole" it from this song, then played this song for him. He shut up after that.

  • Come as you are is bollocks

  • @iangarnettify Whoever created the music owns it, it's their intellectual property. You're making it seem like no artist has ever created an original riff or melody ever, which is not true, if it was cases of plagiarism would pop up constantly, which they don't. Check out bands like The Residents, SPK, Idiot Flesh and try and tell me that they manifested their ideas from somewhere other then their own imagination.

  • 3 songs, 3 variations on a riff. Killing Joke wins.

  • @YoPappee *coughnirvanacough*

  • No one comes up with anything. Everything is copied. Whether it be taken from an influencing song, or something someone saw, ideas do not come on their own. All songs pretty much come from other songs. Don't get pissed off because this time it's a bit more obvious. Good artists copy, great artists steal.

  • @iangarnettify I completely disagree and i think that is a terrible and lazy attitude. If you´re being influenced by someones sound or style its fine, but if you plagiarize someones riff you´re a hack. How about this, mediocre artists steal, great artists innovate and create?

  • @PullingTeeth1 You can't plagiarize. No one owns music. No artists create something completely new. They just manifest other ideas in new creations. Did Nirvana steal the song? No. Did they take a similar riff and make a new song from it? Exactly. Same thing.

  • @iangarnettify If we take single note to copyright thing then noone will be able to create on their own. Some guys didn't realised this paradox. Life goes on and who cares what fools say? Music is about 'art', not money nor copywrights or smilarity.

Also where is difference between getting influenced by someones style and making smilar sounding intro? It is same thing for me. Someone just getting influenced by (copies) style to 'steal' fame of great artists that are on wave now?

  • Yeah but captain its gone wrong... there's no cows to chase anymore, The fools have taken over the ability to be young.

  • sublime

  • "OMG you bastards stole my box-riff!!" pointless

  • To put the whole riff thing to rest it was invented by the beatles like all other music was invented by the beatles full stop! The song you're searching for is Money by the beatles full stop.

  • @jim7684 in addition to my last comment Kurt was a also a big beatles fan as are most musicians of that era!

  • @jim7684 full stop.

  • @jim7684 fuck the Beatles.Velvet underground owns the fuck out of the beatles, and had a bigger impact on punk/post-punk then the Beatles did.

  • @pankclaw beatles baby! so great. don't cry.

  • @jim7684 Actually, Money was a cover of Barrett Strong's "Money (That's what I want)" which was released in 1959.

  • the germs lexicon devil makes black flag nervous breakdown, louie louie makes wild thing, in the city makes holidays in the sun...on and on...

  • the damned already, knowingly, took that opening "is she really going out with him?" on "new rose" from "leader of the pack" from over a decade earlier, and they themselves didn't in turn complain when joe jackson did his own song with that same line two years afterward. the ramones never sued all the punk bands doing songs totally identical in some cases to theirs. compare beach boys' "surfin usa" with chuck berry's "sweet sixteen".

  • Thanks to Nirvana I discovered this song. People can bitch all day but we all know all the three songs are fucking genius and great.

  • One of the finest songs ever written.

  • When three guys are basically playing the same riff, I believe protocol involves hating on the guy who made the most money with it... especially if he also made the worst song of the three. However, I'm sure a lot of kids were taken to this song after following Nirvana here through Killing Joke, so it's all good in the end.

  • Killing Joke took this riff and made a far better song. Fuck anyone who thinks The Damned are better than Killing Joke.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila and then nirvana took it and made even far better song. Fuck anyone who thinks killing joke are better than nirvana.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila Yeah! Fuck everyone who has a different opinion than me! They all are douche bags because they think differently. You are so thick.

  • @AssDroidz Funny you say I'm thick when you think I said "fuck everyone that has a different opinion to me". At least I can read dipshit.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila You do realize that I was interpreting what you said, dipshit.

  • @AssDroidz Yes and it wasnt a very funny or intelligent interpretation was it? Moron.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila Shut up or GTFO.

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila And Nirvana took it too and made a far better song than Killing Joke's.

  • Sounds like to me Nirvana has to copy songs from other people well now that just blew my mind.

  • LOVE IT! Reminds me of sitting in my basement flat in the early 1980's listening to 'Strawberries' and drinking lots of beers in the morning after a night shift!! Who ever said The Damned couldn't write interesting music - AWAY THE CAPTAIN......

  • killing jokes 'eighties' brought me here

  • Life Goes On, Eighties and Come As You Are have two things in common; similar riffs and fact that they all suck completely. No offense just opinion.

  • Nirvana's song is the better.

  • @TheAnaValesca Whatever you say scooter :)

  • OMG!

  • what a great song...Strawberries..fav Damned album

  • It's just a coincidense, when I messed around with my dad's guitar at age 9 (when I had no clue who Nirvana, nor who The Damned were) I came up with a similar intro.

  • @DanManThePurple funny you say that - when I was in a band back in the early '80's, I wrote a song I thought was just brilliant until I threw Strawberries on one day and realized that the guitar bit to my masterpiece was exactly the same as Life Goes On. But I don't actually think it was a ripoff, it's just a pretty logical little riff every guitar player probably come up with some variation of.

  • Does anyone know exactly where the woman/mirror/skull image was used? I don't recognize it as an album cover.

  • It's an image called 'All is Vanity' drawn by Charles Allan Gilbert in 1892.

  • @LongHairedLoser

Got that much, I actually own a vintage print of it. I just want to know how, when, and in what frequency The damned used it. Was it an album cover I haven't seen? random poster? Was the text just put on it by the author of the video?

  • Google images shows a few T-Shirts with the image and the word 'Damned' on it. I can't find anything else.

  • @LongHairedLoser I googled it myself, but didn't see anything. It's cool nonetheless, having an original print that both The damned and I thought was cool. I got real excited when I saw it as a thumbnail in the suggestion list. Thanks for the info.

  • @GoTorino It's from the single ”Stretcher Case Baby”. A giveaway at a couple of concerts in 1977. Costs about £50 on ebay.

  • @PrinsBengt Couldn't find any vinyl on Ebay, just a tshirt, but I'll keep looking, thanks for the info.

  • day tripper

    life goes on

    eighties

    come as you are

its just the evolution of rock n roll

  • Play this at my funeral please

  • Needs more cowbell.

  • I'm a big fan of both The Damned and Nirvana, and when I first heard this I figured Kurt had to have heard this. Kind of ironic since this is an anti-suicide song.

  • There's so much music in this world , that it's quite hard to do music that don't sound little like some other song , and the nirvana come as you are is much better than this .

  • It seems that everyone on this song likes all three, but go to eighties and everyone argues about the similarities

  • the nirvane version sounds more a copy of this one than killing joke...killing jokes' eighties songs has more speed and sounds gothic

  • the comments are so much more pleasant compared to the ones on 80s

  • Life Goes On, Eighties and Come As You Are are all fucking great songs so everyone shut the fuck up

  • @evildogheretic Couldn't agree more!!!

  • The guitars have similarities, yet they all have a different tune, and I wouldn't say any of them are copied, cause thousands of songs sound similar, look at louie louie and more than a feeling, they just do, no copyright infringements... just music.

  • Tjank you damned, thank you killed joke and thanks nirvana for 3 awsome tunes

  • COWBELL!!!!! WE NEED MORE COWBELL.......

  • NO I DONT HAVE A GUN...wait, hold on a sec...

  • i still love the damned !!!!

  • This isn't better or worse than Nirvana or Killing Joke. It's about the fucking same unless you're deaf. Or you're just an insecure poser who doesn't want to be associated with one of the other bands.

  • Better than Nirvana's bullshit.

  • great song... it really gets you through the day. life is hard but theres always reasons things go wrong, if we never learn from our mistakes theres no telling what we would turn into. theres a reason to everything.

great song, love this track. ive heard the opening guitar in quite a few other songs, killing joke and nirvana used it. but if im right the damned originally did the opening guitar idea, theyve been around longer than ya think.

  • This is a totally shared tune by 3 of the best artists ever. The fact we still listen to them all proves it's not about upmanship but about the fact we love music and the fact this riff has stood the test of time.

  • shut up trolls

  • Heard this opening riff and wanted to bust out screaming "EIGHTIES! I'M LIVING IN THE EIGHTIES!"

  • @wrecktem me too

  • Lol. So many good songs so far with the same guitar riff. I should do the same. :D j/k

  • rip off?? not necessary most of the time musicians, artists borrow from others...its kool as long as they dont act as if they dont...GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE...but sometime you actually dont know a riff has already been done...

  • I fart in my bed and I'm punk... gee who ripped who off and why punk was about being a rip off...

  • MY DAD CAN BEAT UP YOUR DAD.

  • Heard the version from "fresh Young Fellows? Anybody? I find this quite good..

  • killing joke borrowed from the damned, nirvana borrowed from the killing joke. result: three pretty cool and different songs.

  • I borrowed the riff from this song. WMG are releasing the single worldwide next week. I hope nobody notices.

  • Melancholic, but life-affirming. Helped me get over a few teenage moments in the '80s. Not deep, but just enough.

  • Strawberries..yeah got to agree,fucking superb album.

  • This is off of Strawberries... amazing album, its easy to get lost in it

  • Hmmm is it just me or does this song sound like Come as you are, and Eighties? XD

  • So Nirvana borrowed from Killing Joke, and Killing Joke borrowed from the Damned..

It'd be funny if the Damned had copied some other song, and that other song another one and so on.

  • @cometogether21 actually there is people that says the first was day tripper from the beatles

  • @federerules ... and the Beatles got it from... Jesus!

  • loving it.. as you grow older you realise that its all pretty nasty but its been like that since time immemorial ..you come in on yer own and piss off much the same..just got to keep it together and respect one another or dive off if you want..today is the happiest day of your life

  • "Come as You Are" is a chromatic lick. "Life Goes On" is pentatonic.

The bass just has the same tone in both songs. And they both kick ass!

You want two licks that are almost identical? Check out Dream Theater's "Endless Sacrifice" and Michael Jackson's "Give Into Me". :P

  • i met captain at the croydon ents centre[where he used to clean the bogs]while the band i was in [cooara]supported the stranglers. He had been a massive influence musically and i must say you could not hang with a nicer geezer..

  • the bassline also sounds exactly like 'Olsen Olsen' by Sigur Ros!

  • @yenbadcito I'm not alone!

  • @yenbadcito Just listening to "Come As You Are", "Eighties", "Life Goes On", and "Olsen Olsen" right now!

  • The riff, the beat, the lyrics, the vocals, the soloing... oooh, gives me goosebumps. It's such a beautiful song...

  • HUMANS are A total RIP off FROM monkeys SOMEDAY the MONKEYS will SUE us

  • Comment removed

  • @Big Jim... Well put it this way, I was playing similar bass lines aged 14, it's not that hard.

  • Nirvana's song made me want to jump up and down, Killing Joke's song made me want to punch someone in the face, The Damned song made me want to rub one out, knock someone out and THEN celebrate.

  • any band that pays some bloody legal wanker to sue another band needs to be shot and shoved up a ducks arse, it's music for fucks sake

  • @paranoidnutter It's also a cut-throat industry. If an artist has a legitimate case for plagiarism then they should sue to get what's rightfully theirs.

  • And soon or later we'll discover an older song with the same cused riff...

  • Life goes on, Eighties and Come as You are are three different but brilliant songs. I don't care if their riffs are the same.

  • The Damned should sue both fucking bands for ripping them off.

  • Man, I'm SO pissed Courtney Love drugged Kurt Cobain and forced him to write Come As You Are and make it similar to this son and Eighties. Because, after all, Kurt never did ANYTHING wrong according to Nirvana fanatics. That evil bitch strikes again!

  • @Jonathannovak1 when Kurt wrote Come as you are he even knew Courtney, lol.

  • i know that it is anoying narvana ripped these guys off but at the end of the day come as you ar is a shitty song written by an over hyped shitty band

  • @BigishJim1 Killing Joke ripped this off. Get your facts straight idiot.

  • @RebelThoughts ur the fucken idiot they both ripped this song off get ur facts straight dumb ass

  • who wrote this? the Capt?

  • I thought it was Tum of Mult...............but that answer speaks novels of just how multi-faceted The Damned truly were.

  • Timotheus of Miletus (c. 446-357 BC) ,Greek musician and dithyrambic poet did a similar bass riff but he never gets the credit he deserves.

  • @spagnogulan He must be lolling in his grave right now... And that's not a typo.

  • @spagnogulan can u point me to this riff

  • @roejogan8

I farted this riff the other day, I made me a million dollars off it.

  • @tubbythug92 Fag say sumthing pathetic n make me laugh like how u did in the morning lolol

  • @FukNirvana

  • @FukNirvana

No sir bro, you brought the fight here so here I am bitch. You video game playing, brainless, pointless, terrible at trolling, stupid little runt.

  • @spagnogulan

    are you being sarcastic

  • its good to see that people commenting on this video have a sense of humor about the Killing Joke/Nirvana thing. im sick of hearing people bitch about the whole thing.

  • its good to see that people commenting on this video have a sense of humor about the Killing Joke/Nirvana thing. im sick of hearing people bitch about the whole thing.

  • wonderful. Well, considering Eighties and Come as you are are some of my favourite songs ever its cool listen to the ORIGINAL riff :)

  • This is a rip off of a song by Mozart, LOOK IT UP!

  • damn dude im glad people have turned me over to the damned and killing joke, i needed a change of scenery music wise. all ive been listening to is crossover and thrash.

  • all three song accualy have diffrent riffs

  • @benirvana1 yeah but they are simmilar enough to each other than fans will bitch anyways

  • this is a rip off of that Damned track 'life goes on'...er

  • let's go through the history of music and see how many riffs are similar from 1 band to the next...thousands. but their completely different songs and that's all that matters. everyone shut the fuck up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is a rip off of come as you are :O

  • @000TwistedFreak no mate its not, Kurt Cobain took the Come as you are rift form Killing Joke's - ‘Eighties’ and I’m assuming that Killing Joke in turn took the same rift from this track. There’s no way that either Killing Joke or The Damned could of ripped Cobain off as these two tracks were written in the 70s and 80s, Kurt admitted that 'come as you are' was influenced the ‘Eighties’ song which is probably why Killing Joke tried to sue Nirvana ha ha ha

  • @donkey2883 I know dude, i was making fun of how everyone can't stop discussing who ripped off who....Theyre all great songs, and actually not that similar except for the riffs...And even they are different

  • @donkey2883 this song came out in 82 i thought?

  • wow someoe listen to caome as you are and this the riff is lik the same

  • @yomama69ist duh.....I hope you are joking... The dammed would have to have a time machine to rip the riff,

  • @ronniesoak2003 no this was released in the seventies

  • @yomama69ist 1982.

  • omg that guitar riff that start at 0:33 is just so nice

  • i hear this for the first time in my life. oh my god.

  • @Inbetrieb same i just thought wtf !

  • No, Nirvana ripped off Killing Joke's "Eighties" riff. Check it out and u tell me.

  • i don't think any of these bands are one hit wonders... and theres no price on getting a new generation of rock n roll bands going... music yes just music

  • This song is a total rip off of a Damned song called Life Goes On.

  • @Kelly14UK Yeah, it reminds me of the Damned.

  • @Kelly14UK yeah but you have to have the follow through and kill yourself just for authenticity ; )

  • @Kelly14UK what are you talking about this is the damned

  • @wipers86

    Somebody didnt get the joke.

  • @Grunge4ever1993 ok I just thought you got confused about what band was doing this song lol

  • @Kelly14UK What? This IS the Damned!

  • @siriuslili ever heard of sarcasm?

  • @Kelly14UK this is the DAMNED you smacked ass!!!!!

  • This song is from 1982. Killing Joke's song is from 1984. I think it's safe to say that Killing Joke wouldn't have made their song "Eighties" without The Damned existing and Nirvana wouldn't have made "Come As You Are" without Killing Joke existing. Either way, you can thank The Damned for the existence of all 3 of those songs.

  • I can understand fully well why Kurt ripped the riff off. It is really great, but it is rather funny how three bands have written songs based off it....LOL.

  • I know it's a fine line but I think Killing Joke had a case, The Damned probably didn't.

  • your piont is misunderstood, yes the majority of people call cradle of filth of goth rock and its not and goth rock is awesome without a dout

  • This is real gothic rock, not like craddle of filth shit or bmth.

  • @BPECA1 "This is the happiest day of your life."

    GOTHIC!

I kid, the Damned are a class band. Just not the first thing that comes to my mind when "gothic rock" is mentioned. Usually its Christian Death or Pornography-era Cure. Oh well. Great song!

  • @BPECA1 goth rock is good but how the fuck can you confuse black metal or progressive metal with goth rock cradle of filth isnt shit get your genres right

  • @codyism666 everybody thinks old school gothic people listen to cof and shit like that. they don't.

  • @BPECA1 your piont was misunderstood, yes the majority of people call cradle of filth of goth rock and its not and goth rock is awesome without a dout it just seemed you were bashing those bands and i know everybody has there own taste in music

  • @BPECA1 cradle of filth is not goth , they are black metal , and they are not shit also

  • Killing Joke are the biggest frauds ever. They almost sued Nirvana for "borrowing this riff, yet they did the same thing when they stole it from The Damned. Killing Joke are the biggest posers in music history. Fuck them.

  • @RebelThoughts your right, because they had one, 2 songs that were not original we should forget about everything they have done and call them a horrible group, moron.

  • @RebelThoughts ah yes - the biggest posers - far worse than britney spears and coldplay- jesus get some perspective- if they nicked it from th
