it was a sad day for me when i heard the news that Grover Washington Jr passed away i still can't get over it . such a great lost to the music world . R.I.P Mr Washington.
I try not to respond to other musical tastes (due to the philosophy "if it sounds good, listen to it"). But since "qu505" posted here, he made himself fair game. My brother once bought "Back In Black" and we both came to the conclusion if you're gonna listen to heavy metal, try Aerosmith. AC/DC sounds exactly like them without the style. Even rappers cover Aerosmith (Run D.M.C.). Plus AC/DC guitar solos were kinda suspect.
If you listened to this song on stereo, you could hear Eric Gale hum along during his guitar solo. Major Holley and Toots Thielemans also performed solos in this fashion. Just FYI.
Why do we loose the best and most talented??? Heaven must have on hell of a band!!! RIP Grover Washington Jr. and thank you for sharing you music with us.
If you listen closely, you can hear Eric Gale vocalize as he plays. This was also a method employed by bassist Major Holley. And Steve Gadd's snare fits this piece. Otherwise Bob James wouldn't had recorded it. Fantastic post.
@SequenceII ...thats dope.....man... r.i.p. to the god guru....now im going have that jam FEEL THE MUSIC in my head today...i have double copies on vinyl but nothing to rock in the ride...glad to have met the gods guru and premier....your pops must be a jazz god?...nice of you to comment back, nice to meet the son of the man who did keys for the god....hit me whenevers.....late
This was the greatest sax solo piece ever recorded back in the day. I was in high school then and I was captivated by the the funkiness of Grover and this song. It's still my all time favorite of instrumental sax pieces.
Man I am going to the closet and break out the stack heel shoes, the big apple hat, the long maxi coat, and guess what I am going to hit the town, this song make you want to do just that. GROVER FOR EVER!
still trying to replace Grovers music, how i loved him ,after a hard day at work what could be better to listen to.

From an era when musicians PLAYED their instruments without gimmicks.
Eric Gale's guitar solo is perfection and his rhythm groove throughout this record stands all on its own as a lesson.

A lot of the artists on Kudu/CTI did funky stuff just like this, for one, Bob James. Grover was funkier, definitely...

OK, I'm kinda trippin'. I wrote a similar comment on "Knucklehead" video and I swear I hadn't read yours.
Kinda funny when you think about where music can take you (back).
