  • The "frumpiness" comes from the plot of this episode where Patty and Cathy were quick changing clothes during the contest to do things the other coild not.

  • My first 1st. love.

  • United Artists had a version out by Janie Grant. They might have saved a few cents on the publishing rights since it was in-house song. Patty also recorded another song that Janie did : "Ribbons and roses". It's on Patty's 1st lp.

  • I always wanted to get with Patty Duke playing Cathy, watch her slowly strip, then tie her up and give her a tongue bath!!!!

  • Why in the world was this unreleased? They should've released it!

  • Poor Anna she was so over worked, I wanted more, if they gave anna a little more breathing room, the show would have gone to its eighth season granteed. What a shame.

  • she's not frumpy, she's very pretty

  • what a frumpy looking girl

  • @jamierourketen By todays standards you'll call that frumpy...she's not "frumpy"...she's adorable.

  • I remember seeing this episode...

  • Ive never heard of Patty Duke before. If shes the one singing then who is the girl standing with the boy just off stage who looks exactly like her?

  • @chanctonbury63 Patty Duke plays Identical cousins on this show, so the other girl is patty as well:)

  • @JoanCrawford1933 Couldnt they afford the wages?

  • @chanctonbury63 Patty Duke played identical twin cousins. I know sounds kind of funny but it was a cute show.

  • This was so funny! Patty and Cathy runnig back and forth. :-)

  • The nervousness she feels in the beginning of this makes her even more adorable.

  • How well I remember seeing this show and hearing this song.I always thought Patty Duke was a fairly good singer, but I have recently read that she never thought so.

  • yeah i loved the patty duke show..bring it back.. F that f troop crap though lol

  • I saw this episode rerun not long ago on LeSea Broadcasting Network (channel 578 on my U-Verse), so some of these shows are still being rerun in places.

  • Nick at nite FTW!! This and the mary tyler moore show and dobie gillis, the lucile ball show, the list goes on

  • I used to sing loud to this from beginning to end around 1988 1989,havent seen this in 20 years and seeing again is preciouuuus

  • what episode number and season was this... :P

  • This is cool, sing it Honey!

  • I am pretty sure this is a favourite amongst prisons

  • You're absolutely right about TV Land. It's pissing me off. I can hardly find the Andy Griffith Show anymore. Where's Gomer Pyle? Patty Duke? Mary Tyler Moore Show? The Addams Family? TV Land was supposed to be the one network where you can find older shows. There are plenty of places to find Everybody Loves Raymond. It's a good show, but that's not what TV Land is supposed to be all about.

  • Pattys' movements are so cute & interesting!!

  • Haven't heard this since 1982. Thanks so much for posting!!

  • Not to be confused with "Tell Me, Momma", written & performed by

Bob Dylan with the Band on tour

    in 1966.

  • Patty is such a cutiepie<3

  • CUTE!

  • Doesn't Patty's brother look like a young Bill Gates!

  • Yeah, I remember this one! Fantastic!

  • I wish TVLand would go back to it's roots & once more show classic programs like this from the 50's and 60's. Love it when they use to show "The Patty Duke Show" each evening. This is a cute song....Patty had a pretty good voice. THANKS for posting! What a delight to watch! You've made my day & my week! I hope ALL your dreams & wishes come true in 2010! :)

  • Aw :-) Yw, Jubal dahling...

I'm delighted I made your day!

    ;-)

The Patty Duke Show season 1 is now available at Amazon & other retail outlets & season 2 is coming out next month.

Now, if we could only get The Life of Riley (1953-1958) , December Bride (1954-1959), Bachelor Father (1957-1962), The Farmer's Daughter (1963-1966), Ben Casey (1961-1966), Please Don't Eat The Daisies (1965-1967), & Julia (1968-1971) on DVD, as well, we'd be in our classic tv glory! ;-)

  • @JubalCalif If you can find WHT (World Harvest Television) in your area-I get it on antenna but I also know Directv carries it-The patty Duke Show is on every Saturday . 2 episodes per week.

  • @katesgram

Thanks for the "heads up" about the WHT network, Kate! Actually I came across it recently & did indeed notice they show reruns of not only Patty Duke, but The Rifleman & other classic shows too! Too bad they only are presented on the weekends. Oh well....guess we should be grateful for what we can get! Thanks again, buddy! Mighty kind of you to share that groovy info with me! CHEERS !!! :)

  • @JubalCalif You are quite welcome! I love the old shows!

  • @katesgram

Sorry...I called you Kate because I mistakenly thought that was your first name. Now I realize your ID is a paly on words & that actually you're Kate's Grandmother! As Maxwell Smart used to say, "Sorry about that, Chief"!!! Hope the rest of your week is as NICE as you are!!! :-)

  • @JubalCalif I also do not care for TV Land these days but I have been enjoying a lot of old shows on hulu.com

  • @katesgram

I second that emotion! Well said & well put! I don't have access to the internet as much as I'd like, but I agree lots of groovy shows & movies are available for free at hulu.com. THANKS for your comment! :-)

  • @JubalCalif A network on many cable systems in the US, ThisTV, is showing the Patty Duke Show at 6 AM Eastern, 5 Central. I just got it on my cable system. ThisTV in my market is handled by WLBT-TV in Jackson, MS, and is on Channel 3.3 on TV.

  • @MrJayBBluejay

THANKS a million for the heads up in regards to ThisTV showing this classic 60's sitcom! CHEERS, mate!

  • Yep. WAY TO CUTE!! I like Patty's version of this song better than the original. Her voice fits the lyrics and content of the song better. It's a song that should be sung by a young girl. So she was perfect in every way! Thank you so much for posting!

  • Amen to that. United Artists should have released this version of her song on a record, perhaps backed either the song she sang on the "Jimmy Dean Show", "Love Makes the World Go 'Round", or "When Love Is Gone" which she did on the episode where she and Cathy wrote a song from a poem.

Patty's version of this song is cute and flirty.

  • Yah man! I agree with you. "The Song Writers" episode had that great song in it! I wish that a CD company had done a Patty Duke Show song collection CD. The show had so many great musical guest stars like Chad and Jeremy, etc. They should have done that!

  • @MrWerewolf1000 Yeah, even the simple background music when there's really nothing going on for example, when their in the shake shop, or just talking, I always hear some cool background music. I would love to have a soundtrack to this show.

  • Great idea. I definetly think that some of the background music, especially in the shake shop from season 2, was the BEST. Check out the episode Patty and the Cut Rate Casanova and hear the SWEET rock music that plays in the juke box in the opening before the credits! Sid Ramin and Harry Geller were the best TV SHOW music writers EVER!!

  • Yeah, those two guys were genuises! Too bad it's overlooked by "TV media historians" , but I like to see it as a hidden treasure, a diamond in the rough. I feel so fortunate to have found it!

  • TOTALLY! You too are a genuis! I ALWAYS get crapped on for liking and knowing about all these random 'old school' people and events in cinema. But like you said, they are diamonds in the rough. And you know what people say..."Diamonds last forever".

  • Bingo my good man... BTW I forgot to mention since we're on the subject, I just recieved my first season by mail today and I'm on a "Patty Duke Show High" lol. I owned the entire series before, but I sold it because it was a boot-leg collection (recordings from old Nick-at-nite airings) which were cut about 1 minute and a half per episode + sub-par quality. I'm trying to come up with some money for season two which is released on my B-Day (go figure) lol. It's gonna be tough though. I'm broke.

  • WEIRD! I did the same dang thing! I got the bootleg one from Louisiana or something like that. I actually pre-ordered season one last September and had it the day it was released! I did the same for season two! Season Two comes out February 9! Just thought I should let you know. Go to Amazon and get it for way cheaper. Ever since I first saw the miracle worker when I wsa younger, I've had a PDS high too for like...FOREVER now! What's your favorite episode from season one?

  • It's tough name just one. I'll give you a top five.

    1. Let' Em eat Cake

    2. The Perfect Teenager

    3. The Working Girl

    4. Authour! Authour!

    5. The Actress

Tough to leave out the others. I think the one greatest thing out of season 1 comes from 'The Continental' episode. There's a uncut scene that is done on one continued shot that last for about 3 1/2 minutes where Patty and Richard have their last scene in the empty house. It is by far the greatest scene of all 3 seasons. Patty nails it!!!

  • THAT ROCKS! The episodes you rattled off were ones that I was going to put down but youtube said that I "wrote" too many characters! I LOVE that scene where she follows Richard around the living room and stuff. His reactions are awesome too! I also really like The Working Girl, I watched it at college yesterday on my laptop between classes! YEAH!!

  • Cool! What's your top 5?

  • 1.The Genius

    2. Patty Pits Wits Two Brits Hits

    3. The Actress

    4. The Girl From N.E.P.H.E.W

    5. Patty the Chatterbox

I could watch them over and over again!! Some are from seasons two and three though.

  • @MrWerewolf1000 Nice choices! Well if you were to ask me which is my favorite of all three seasons, I would have to say Patty the Chatterbox. I think its the funniest, most clever, most charming, most entertaining episode they ever made. Funny that it would be a episode that she rarely says anything, but if you think about it, its right up her alley fresh off The Miracle Worker. I think I've seen that episode 10x more than any other. I'm glad it's atleast in you top 5! Well I'm saving $ for #2.

  • You are so on th ball man! Not saying much and only using body language and facial expressions was her trademark! Sweet man! Save that $ fast! I can't wait for the 9th! That's gonna ROCK!

  • Ah yes my first tv crush, none other than Patty Duke. She sure was a cutey. :)

  • I wish I had been alive and a teenager in 1964 (I wasn't born until 1968) because I would have done anything to date Patty because she was oh-so beautiful in this clip and I think the recent years haven't been kind to Patty in the looks department (no offense). However, Patty has survived all the problems she faced in her life and better Patty Duke the way she is now than being in a coffin.

  • Weird thing, but I have a girlfriend that I've had for the past four years. She looks EXCACTLY like Patty Duke! She's even five feet tall like her! Not kidding! She even has those same eyes and smile. I guess I didn't see it before now.

  • You lucky guy!

  • she was sooo damn cute !!!!

  • very pretty patty duke.

  • I first saw this when I was about eight years old, and remembered it all these years later.

  • Well I've always wondered ~ obviously PATTY DUKE recorded this song for her TV Show at the time, but it was never released as any kind of single by her ~ or WAS IT? Did the song TELL ME MAMA make the charts by any pop artist at the time?

  • Apparently Christine Quaite from Britain sang it originally & it reached a satisfactory number on the charts.

  • Frankie Avaalon i think has a version of this.even dean martin.. must have been a preety hot song back then

  • Janie Grant also recorded it.

  • Alright, because it was on Nick at Nite from 1988-1992, so it must have been on sometime between those four years....

  • Actually, I bought this set from someone on Ioffer, so I'm uncertain which year(s) these were recorded from Nick at Nite, but as I'd watched this when N@N had been airing the series, it was on Nick@ Nite's line-up from mid to late 1980s.

  • The song is corny, but Patty Duke is AOK!

  • Question LOLFanme, What year did you record this on Nick at Nite?(Just curious)

  • I remember loving this one,I waited nearly 20 years to hear it again,I used to watch the show on The Nickelodeon back in the 80s,thaaaaaaanks...

  • I waited years to get this to a cassette or CD, myself. I was disappointed that Tell Me Mama is one of Patty's more obscure entries, but I've loved this tune since I first heard it back in the mid 1980s while The Patty Duke Show wasaired in reruns on Nick@Nite. Long before it became the crap network it is today. Glad so many of you enjoy this song as well.

  • This is good.

Janie Grant's 1962 version on Youtube is New York pop music at its finest!

  • I saw on Nick@Night as a preview when I was about 12 and remember this as if it was just yesterday!

  • The British singer Christine Quaite recorded it and it hit the N. American charts about 1964. The 45 rpm recording here at You Tube..I think plays a shade fast...but she does a great job.

  • She's so cute and this was a nice song for her ~ it really should have been released as a single but to the best of my knowledge it never was. Not too long after this PATTY hit the charts with DON'T JUST STAND THERE ~ and had some follow up hit Songs - Primarily known for acting, I think she did pretty darn

well with Records at that time.

  • Thanks for posting this video ;)

I love me some Patty Duke for always & ever.

  • This takes me back, too! I was in elementary school when they reran "The Patty Duke Show" on Nick-at-Nite. I loved to watch it along with "Donna Reed," "My Three Sons" and all the other great shows that comprised the classic Nick-at-Nite line-up. Remember the Nick-at-Nite fairy? "For classic TV in every bite, make the switch to Nick-at-Nite Brand Reruns!" I also remember Patty singing Herman and the Hermits' "I'm Henry the VIII." I wish they would put it on DVD.

  • I remember my favorite Patty Duke was when Patty ate her mother's prize cake for the church bazaar & then after it was re-made by their maid Mrs. Williams, Ross took a bite out of it (accidentally). The poor way that Ross looked at Patty when she was chewing him out really took me back. I always felt bad for Ross, because the way Patty tortured him constantly, was the same way my sister used to treat me as well (but not as funny, though!)

  • I loved that episode! Patty did like to torture Ross, didn't she. He did tend to get annoying at times though.

  • I remember the fairy. I watched SO much Nick-at-Nite growing up. "Patty Duke" was my favorite. I also liked Mr. Ed.

  • Do you know what Nick at Nite's latest show is? Scrubs. This should let you know how far that station has fallen.

  • I agree, and TV Land is just as bad.

  • Considering that everybody who watches the older shows are getting older, Nick not showing the Patty Duke Show or anything else they used to show is understandable-they do have to make money, and achieve high ratings.

  • they are now showing TPDS on WHT look for it near the religous channels in your cable guide. it comes on $ p .m Monday through friday

  • "This" network shows The Patty Duke show 2 times in the morning during the week and once on Saturday morning.

  • Thank you for this post!!!

I have been looking for this episode excerpt for a VERY long time! (I saw it on commercials in 1990.) It reminds me of going to school in sixth grade, and I'm 29 now!

Patty Duke is adorable. You gotta love her!!
