most good jazz musicians can play other styles of music usually better than those doing such styles as blues, metal, rock, pop, clasical music, latin etc so if your gonna play or learn music better get it in your soul(jazz that is)
And quiet as its kept its really not all that difficult. I do it alot of times without meaning to or when Im just feeling it. And by the way Im a left handed drummer so its quite easy for me. Chambers is a beast and has been for a long time. Virgil Donati will prove that this is a very simple thing to do as he demonstrates doing it separately with both feet and then both together.
Hell of a song , iI first got hip to Scofield, when he played with Miles ,and Cobham,he is to me the badist blues gutarist with lots of theory under his belt: eat your heart out Eric Clapton...
@beantown28 I'm with you on that one. Was introduced by mate when the cd came out, then saw the dvd (actually, I think it was a video). Played them both death. Peace & love of the good muzic.
Have any of you critics heard or seen what Dennis is playing with his single bass-drum pedal? Most metal drummers would gladly be able to play that on one. They never will because they just don't get it. That is why double pedals had to be invented, so the wannabes might come close to sounding as good as Dennis. Sad isn't it? RESPECT!!
@StarTrekGorilla Thanks to you for supporting my comment. We are obviously reading from the same score. Really sad that the detractors will never get it:)
@daverow49 the use of two pedals was pioneered in the 30's by a jazz legend. So what if you want to play more notes with 2 feet? It was invented because it's cool; so cool even Dennis uses one. Don't judge it's use on metal drummers who don't practice enough, it's totally possible. At least the top metal drummers (ex. Derek Roddy) perfect their left foot far beyond your conventional drummer.
Hey, what exactly does the colour of the drum have to do with the artistry being crafted, my friends? Anyway, we know people that have the "gig" are going to be criticized. We wish we could have a thousand dollar per drum rig. Wouldn't we, guyz? Oh, well how is that Holiday Inn wedding gig working for you?
Man do I miss the kick ass fusion comps like these. Sco, Stern, Chick, Herbie - why did it have to go away? This cut is such an excellent representation of the great wrting and grooves this period produced.
also, i don't really get scofield's playing. it's like he's constantly going, "kay, this note? naw, naw, wait... oh, this one! no, not that..." it's like he's just really tired and doesn't quite have the energy to fully commit to playing the notes. not saying he's not a good player, i just don't get his style. never have.
Well 25 years, I know it feels like it was yesterday :(
Back then he was soooo coooool and groovy, these days he is less groovy, he is more into the "impossible" (speed & odd time signatures) rather than a good groovy/funky beat
@y2rock maybe he's trying to "keep up" with today's generation of drummers, with the speed and everything, since a basic groove doesn't seem to excite most people these days. sad, but what can you do?

Dennis seems to have himself very balanced and centered, doesn't sacrifice the rhythm just to satisfy any ego he might have; like if the other guys told him to come in and just wail away, he would still insist on holding the groove and playing what's appropriate. I like he isn't full of body-english and faces when he decides to go off, either. he just lets his hands and sticks do the talking. all business when he's playing. joy to watch.

Does they keyboardist's (I'm blanking on the name) equipment look like one of those flimsy Casio keyboards you can buy in the JC Penney catalog? It just looks oddly cheap....
yeah man. Dennis Chambers plays his part within the band perfectly. He keeps the groove flawlessly and when it is his turn, show's his awesome skill while STILL maintaining a groove. This man is unreal
most good jazz musicians can play other styles of music usually better than those doing such styles as blues, metal, rock, pop, clasical music, latin etc so if your gonna play or learn music better get it in your soul(jazz that is)

Keyboardists' name: Jim Beard, mystery solved.

Does they keyboardist's (I'm blanking on the name) equipment look like one of those flimsy Casio keyboards you can buy in the JC Penney catalog? It just looks oddly cheap....

when the bass begins to slap with the kit, the result is so funky! the space makes live! and the triplet unison bit at 1 20 ish! pow!

Dennis Chambers leaves enough space for Gary Grainger to fit into, and the result is soooo funky. :D

Its not the drummer who wants to be in the spotlight.
just support the music as best as he can most drummers forgotten that important rule along time ago.

yeah man. Dennis Chambers plays his part within the band perfectly. He keeps the groove flawlessly and when it is his turn, show's his awesome skill while STILL maintaining a groove. This man is unreal
