When his "little girl" decides to marry a meathead that shows him absolutely no respect, he STILL allows them to live in his home free of charge. And when they have a child, he is the epitome of a doting grandfather.
Actually, if you bother to watch any interviews with the cast or creators, Archie Bunker was supposed to be a unlikable character. And they went out of their way to portray him thus. They were shocked that the American public gravitated to the figure and loved him.
There were no intentions of shades of gray. The writers purposefully were pushing a progressive agenda (again, read/listen to what they had to say) and were befuddled by America's willingness to embrace Archie.
Yes, you are correct. But why were they forced to grow Archie in the direction that they did? Because the people loved him. He may have been ignorant. He may have been bigoted (NOT racist, there is a difference). He may have been lots of things. But ultimately, he was the guy next door. While the intention was to lampoon and disparage the archetype, the reaction was the exact opposite of what they expected: America loved him.

Despite having limited education, Archie worked his way up to a position of responsibility at his job. When his job abruptly ended, he pulled himself up and created his own job. He paid off his mortgage and allowed himself only simple pleasures: bowling, beer, cigars, the occasional ballgame. The Archie Bunkers of America make the country function.
It's only when he becomes the owner of a restaurant and bar that he demonstrates he has any initiative. And, it's even then is, when he: evolves into half-way of a human being. Then he is appealing enough to make substantial friends instead being stuck with nincompoops from his loading dock days.
But, in this scene, he still is the jerk that is a disappointment to what a man should be as a husband and father. Who could look up to him and be proud? I'd be ashamed of him.

RedEye, if you've ever bothered to read the bible, you'd know that Jesus was probably the worlds first socialist (ironic since conservatives claim him as their mascot). Whether it's Matthew 19:20, Luke 14:12-14, Acts 4:32-35, Proverbs 19:17, Proverbs 22:9, Luke 12:33-34, etc, the bible has 64 passages either spoken by Jesus, or spoken by God which make the point that the meek of the earth (the poor) are Gods children, and to turn your back on them is to turn your back on God...
...In essence the bible says throughout that if you have possessions, then it means you're not doing everything you can to help the meek of the earth (which is your ticket in to heaven). Given, most Christians kind of ignore this line of thinking because to give up all your possessions is to give up power, and you need power to forge an ideology (including Christianity - you can't maintain a church if you give your rent money to the poor). It's one of those tricky contradictions in Christianity.

We've had older systems in place that were capitalism driven (driven by the individual in society with the most gold and guns to keep the peace if it was in their benefit, which it often was). Actually, if you bother to watch any interviews with the cast or creators, Archie Bunker was supposed to be a unlikable character. And they went out of their way to portray him thus. They were shocked that the American public gravitated to the figure and loved him.
There were no intentions of shades of gray. The writers purposefully were pushing a progressive agenda (again, read/listen to what they had to say) and were befuddled by America's willingness to embrace Archie.

Yes, you are correct. But why were they forced to grow Archie in the direction that they did? Because the people loved him. He may have been ignorant. He may have been bigoted (NOT racist, there is a difference). He may have been lots of things. But ultimately, he was the guy next door. While the intention was to lampoon and disparage the archetype, the reaction was the exact opposite of what they expected: America loved him.
Carol O'Connor's amazing acting had a lot to do with it too.

Despite having limited education, Archie worked his way up to a position of responsibility at his job. When his job abruptly ended, he pulled himself up and created his own job. He paid off his mortgage and allowed himself only simple pleasures: bowling, beer, cigars, the occasional ballgame. The Archie Bunkers of America make the country function.

...In essence the bible says throughout that if you have possessions, then it means you're not doing everything you can to help the meek of the earth (which is your ticket in to heaven). Given, most Christians kind of ignore this line of thinking because to give up all your possessions is to give up power, and you need power to forge an ideology (including Christianity - you can't maintain a church if you give your rent money to the poor). It's one of those tricky contradictions in Christianity.

A few examples of socialism are: public roads, traffic lights, schools, libraries, firemen, policemen, regulatory agencies to ensure public safety, etc. Communism on the other hand is a system where the government controls all aspects of the economy to eliminate social classes.

We've had older systems in place that were capitalism driven (driven by the individual in society with the most gold and guns to keep the peace if it was in their benefit, which it often was). Various 3rd world countries still operate under mercenary rule and our European ancestors also used to operate under similar rule in the age of Monarchs, Earls and Barron's (whoever has the gold, makes the rules).
