  • BUYA!

  • Thank you very much for pointing out that depression is a serious condition...I really like your channel, but I'm still new to it (hence, watching this video almost 13 months after you posted it), and I was worried that you might have a more cynical view of depression.

At some point, if you haven't already answered it, you should tackle why men in the Netherlands are so freakin' HOT! ;)

  • Where is Serotonin?

  • ... 0:49 excuse me, what? o.o

  • Hmm i think youtube is finally giving relevant adds now, theres a add about depression to the right of this video for me, and this video is indeed, about depression...

  • So many hand movements.....

  • harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban is about depression actually lol. think about it....dementors...happiness...fight them by remembering your happiest memory ^^, there you go

  • WHERE IS ATHENE?

  • I got 1 week depression cause i lost a 1vs1 fight in paintball -__- explain that shit !

  • how to reduce kortyzol lewel (after i subscribed;)

  • MY FAVOURITE CHANNEL!

  • I'm not sure if your super smart or if you are extremely confident in what you say.

  • @MrEvan58 he is just well documented before making a video

  • I feel depressed for not understanding what you just said.

  • you recommended Harry Potter as a remedy for depression (kind of) this is why you are my favorite youtube person :) (and your helpful/ insightful videos)

  • Well how do you know if you are truly depressed as a Teenager? What is the distention between "depression in teenagers" random sadness. Just a thought.

  • What happened you and Athene?

  • well lot of peoples who r not nrof english speaking land face problem to understand ehat ur saying

  • can u plzz speak slowely??????

  • @9210604659 can you listen faster?

  • I have suffered with depression before. At least, in my situation, I know exactly what it was!! Everytime I have ever been depressed in my life, I have been surrounded in an environment where someone close to me was dealing with depression. The thing is... the first time this happened, it was my mom when I was growing up. So, I didn't have a choice. IF I DID... I would have run fast! I NOW somewhat stupidly am attracted to people who are depressed. I stupidly think I can help them. =(

  • Yep fuck this shit throwing myse

  • Oh my gosh! I love you even more know that I know you also like Harry Potter!

  • why zebras don't get ulcers!!! hahahaha I gotta find that

  • YOU talk too FAST!!! i, as a not English person, find it hard to understand what you say.

Would be great if you talk slower or make lyrics heeh... v_v

  • I subscribed, show me the kitten you will take care of.

  • Hm. So this is very textbook. Do you have personal experience with depression? Just as a little constructive criticism -- you should site whether or not you've had personal dealings with these issues because it will help whatever your opinion/view point is coming from. I could've read all that on Wikipedia or something (but you are enthusiastic 2 listen 2) But I don't have these stress triggers and I've always had periods of depression. Later on I had the triggers but I'm naturally..down. A lot

  • @vindemiatrix The way to deal with it is actually being conscious of the fact that you're down and look for the cause. Which is hard to find, because people like to blame other things for their own problems. The way is to actually look for a cause of your sadness inside you, and start being awesome.

  • @vindemiatrix Honestly, does Dean seem like the kinda guy who would be depressed? If i had knowledge like him, I'd take over the fucking world, not be depressed

  • Ok, moved from the negative thoughts video to the depression video, fifteen seconds in and I have a very enthusiastic, somewhat loud (in a very happy way) let me know that what I feel is a chemical...thing. I should feel reassured, but not really. You are very happy. Must be nice. Did you not have life long stress of some sort that your body was incapable of dealing with?

  • Would you please give the titles of the dutch books? Der zijn Belgen geïntresseerd ;)

  • hippo campus... te he

  • thanks for the stalking invite, I definitely feel more comfortable doing that now!

  • just when i though you could not be any more awesome, you reveal that you like harry potter!

  • HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER

  • Depression is fuckin' bullshit !!

  • Could you please tell me which Dutch books you have/had?

I am Dutch myself so I might be able to get something from them.

  • @Escott013 Well, I have both . Yay! I'm a statistic.

  • So you're Dutch! Lol figured the accent out

  • I came to learn about depression, but I paused the video to go research lion fighting techniques.

  • When in danger, Or in doubt, Run in circles, Scream and shout :)

  • I reckon he looks like Reznor too.

  • Nice

  • i still cant belive this is og furious

  • 5 FAGS watched this video

  • i don't necessarily think that depression is 100% genetic, but i would definitely agree that it is very likely to be passed on. for example, my grandmother has anxiety. no one else in my family does except for me. also, when i was a little kid i had panic attacks but no traumatic experiences to make me do that.

  • Hey Dean, Top Stuff Man! Would ya consider doing a video on exercise and its metal and physiological affects?? ;)

  • OMG xD 'i think snape is depressed.'

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks , man.

  • Lion=Fight.

  • It makes me depressed when people click the dislike button. =(

  • I FUCKING LOVE TRENT REZNOR

  • YOU DUTCH!? WHATS THE BOOK NAMES DUTCH FOR THE WIN....!

I'm from Holland Where the F*CK you from?

  • "he looks like trent reznor" - ha i always thought that xD

  • So, if I've been dumped twice, knocked back from a girl I've been trying do hard to get, my grandparent's diagnosed with cancer, schools stressing me out, people in general arent good. Is that depression or teenage sandess I get 5/7 times a week? I'm 15.

  • @TheSoulreaper25 Lol, do you have any idea how generic and unbelievably common that situation is for teenagers. If you can't handle dating, you should even try. School stresses everyone out. If you weren't busy worrying about dating you could spend time with your grandparent and school. I think your teenage sadness is keeping you from fixing a problem that's completely capable of being fixed.

  • @TheSoulreaper25 highs and lows

  • umm...... what??

  • It's Athenewins ..and this guy

  • Awesome, hij kan ook nog nederlands :o

  • did you know that lab animals have been modified genetically to be depressed? and that these animals stary depressed no matter how ideal the enviroment? and these animals have been put in dozens and dozens of diff. environments and yet they remain depressed? I tell you what, if your positive that something in or about the environment is still causing their depression - then tell me what it is or your just guessing and wishing.

  • cont... & their genetics can be modified & then they r no longer depressed? so how could that be if it was the environment ? IOW the env. didn't change.. I really don't understand what the problem is here 4so many ppl that cannot accept that UR state of mind has 2do w/both genetics & environment. & some people's genotypes r so bad that they're gonna b dep. no matter what & others r so good that all but the most hostile env. will make them dep. & the ppl in btwn have varying lvls of suseptability

  • Wait... is he Dutch?

  • @JuliefromNeth He's from Belgium

  • Dean is talented and he's brilliant and he's right about a lot of things, but he doesn't have the experience or education needed to understand such a large & complex body of science. Scientists draw their conclusions based on avail evidence & facts and reading a book or two doesn't even come close to touching on this subject.

  • Comment removed

  • you could tell something about the connection between dopamin, soretonin and depression that would be awesome too.. but very informative love this channel

  • @klavsen22 youtube.com/watch?v=NOAgplgTxfc

  • I hate when people comment on dislikes.. but seriously whoever disliked this video must have serious issues.. Like depression.

  • @soondooboo1 that is 100% truth don't even have to think twice..

  • how does marijuana affect the hipocampus?

  • Where do you live in belgium? Xd

  • I was wondering why you didn't mention serotonin and norepinephrine.

  • Are you dutch?

  • When I'm depressed, I suck on a jolly rancher, and think about life.

Not the grape ones though. Almost killed myself doing that.

  • poor severus!

  • For your convenience, the book mentioned in the video is:

Why Zebras Dont Get Ulcers - Robert M. Sapolsky

  • R u Belgian or Dutch?

  • Your dutch?

  • isn't a hippocampus a Greek fish horse thingy??

  • @lalalalalalala494 It belongs to the limbic system and plays important roles in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation.

Also it means seahorse, not greek fish horse thingy.

  • @mrpops123123 look up your Greek mythology hippocampus is a horse with a tale, gills and scales, so yes seahorse, but thats just boring

  • @lalalalalalala494 So,its a seahorse ><

  • @mrpops123123 ahh but not a boring sea horse

  • @lalalalalalala494 Its a horse.That lives in the sea.

    Therefore,a seahorse

    :D

  • @mrpops123123 yes xD

  • Hahaha I'm glad you noticed that Snape looks like Trent as well. I like this video.

  • You look a bit like Jacob from Lost in this video, and speak a hell of a lot more sense.

  • @BarryDong LOL yes.

  • Maybe we can all agree on one thing and that is Deans videos always help relieve depression. ;)

  • I guess the only think there is that's left to say to those who do not believe that Genetics causes depression or is perhaps even a cause of depression is "what kind of evidence do you need? What would be acceptable to you? IOW, what would prove it to you?" I'd really like to know.

  • Hey Dean, you said that this depression is not to be confused with teenage sadness. Well, what is teenage sadness? How is it different?

  • well u can see a psychologist or ...

i was depressed but i was happy when is started waching these videos

  • So, I thank you for your video with a nice explanation and all. My depression had to do with loads of things, but especially with how I viewed things.

Now ofcourse there are people out there with a seasonal depression disorder, switching their state of mind will not be sufficient.

If you however suffered from external influences and your own mind fucking with you and you need help?

I am approachable. Send me a pm. A psychologist can tell you interesting stuff, but YOU have to fix it.

  • @Zalzyn SHUT THE FUCK UP!

  • @XxL3m0n4d3xX Thanks dude.

  • being tired. I got really deep into the negative emotions, but I also realized that my health was in danger because of it. Eastern cultures believe that no physical disease exists without mental attributes to it. I think they are right.

So I thought it was nice to know what was happening to me. But I changed my way of thinking. Nothing from then on mattered to me than except feeling peaceful. And I have that as a purpose now. To reach and keep that peacefulness. And help others reach it.

  • I have been depressed for 7 years and I did see a psychologist 4 or 5 times. This gave me a new insight and this is the way I found out about my intellectual giftedness and that the main problem really was with identifying myself and my sense of purpose in life.

I however found out, that your attitude towards things influence your direct state of emotions. I stopped seeing the psychologist and I was really busy at the time. Then my face got paralyzed due to stress and

  • my hippcampus!!!!

  • 4 zebras got ulcers

  • wtf u got a shirt on, and where the fuck is ur hat????

  • @JewleBrews ur thinking of OGFurious this is his other channel where he is much more serious (DeanLeyson= entelectual, OGFurious= comical) atleast in my opinon

  • mmk i got a request. do a video about dual personality disorder/split personality

  • Wow..........I started watching your videos from your "alter-ego" account I guess, and thought it was hilarious but a little dumb, now I discover this account and I'm blown away ! I love this shit, keep it up on both sides ! :) and can you please do one on bipolar? Always been confused about it

  • Could you post a list of your favorite books somewhere? You've sparked the reader in me ^^ Also, I believe your IQ must be insanely high?

  • Very interesting way to describe depression from an endocrinological perspective.

And I do appreciate the fact that you make the distinction between genes as only increasing susceptibility, and unlike with bipolar disorder, depression isn't significantly seeded in genetics.

    LOL @ Snape comment.

Your movies are awesome, and as someone planning on working in the mental health field, I can really appreciate the topics you speak of

    Keep it up! ;D

  • serious q - when cortisol eats away @ the hippocampus, is the damage permanent or temporary?

  • @LanLanW permanent. but dont worry, its not something that happens short term. degredation of the hippocampus would take years and years of cortisol eating away at it

  • man, you must have a massive right hand hit by now lol

  • it's 3am where I am right now and I'm actually revising stuff on depression for a psychology test I have tomorrow! it was nice 'revision' to be able to watch this video and be like 'I know exactly what he's talking about' and be able to fill in all the gaps :D

  • funny the very same thing that should actually save your life ends up killing ya ;)

  • wow cool! Did you also know that cortisol burns fat but destroys your bones and nervuose systemon the long run... boooyaa!!!

  • Do you do research before making a video?

  • Can you tel me the oder boeks as wel?

  • I think you should talk about stalking next. Like why do stalkers stalk and how to deal with them. Just a suggestion.

  • @ Rose...all your argument proves is that you needed to find a reason to make the fact you are depressed ok. Genetics say that it is ok to be ok, too. Study THAT!

  • @Rorman212 and all you've proven is that you can make attacks by pulling them out of your ass.

  • dutch goed man

  • ogfurious ftw

  • THIS IS FOR ALL THE OGs OUT THERE! R KELLY! RESPECT YO!

  • does furious get depression :)

  • ive had it for 4years, ujelly?

  • Can u please speak faster? that way i could understand u better :)

  • Do one on learning musical instruments.

  • @GOOSESTEPIN1 btw nice profile picture

  • @GOOSESTEPIN1 thanks apology accepted

  • i hate depresion, i had it but i kicked its ass, becuz ima badass..duh?

JUST THINK POSITIVE IF YOUR BEGINING TO BE DEPRESSED :D if its major than it sucks >.>

  • oh you can speak normal?:P :O

  • @GOOSESTEPIN1 heres a suggestion... stop watching his videos... your annoying

  • im dutch...and i think im not alone(duim omhoog)

  • Zebra book arrived today!

  • Got depression? smoke pot. problem solved.

  • @MustBeFiend Agree, pot >>> pills

  • @MustBeFiend But that's not resolving the issue it's avoiding it, eventually you will run out of pot and may be faced with both a huge wave of depression and an craving due to an emotional addiction to pot.

  • @AstroJalepeno a craving*

  • @AstroJalepeno or pot might not even help u avoid it to begin with and just leave u depressed besides what are u gonna smoke 24 7?

  • LOL @ Snape = Trent Reznor. My friend says that too.

  • I think you're talking more about anxiety than depression here. There is some crossover but they're still different conditions.

  • @Dabby2 From my experience anxiety and depression seem to go hand in hand, in many cases.

  • This man is a genius!

  • please do a vid on how to deal with stupid people who pisses you off

  • is furious and serious same person??:o

  • @TheSara90 yes

  • Funny as hell. Very informative too, but WRONG on one important point. Genetics plays a huge role in depression as proven by numerous studies.

  • @RoseCG interesting! The info I have definitely isn't complete so could you elaborate on that?

All I know about is that scientists know the SLC6A4 gene that regulates the increase of serotonin in the brain plays a big part in depression. Simply cause there's a long and a short version of this gene and those unfortunate enough to have the short one are less efficient at regulating their serotonin levels, leaving htem more susceptible. But genes can't make depression inevitable is all I mean.

  • not enough chars allowed 4me 2answer. Ur smart. think where I'm going w/this. Wut if there was acombo of Genes that cause ppl 2develop depression if exposed 2beyond certain level of anxiety/worry./stress? We already agree on that. Change way you look at it. Wut if it was certain level of exposure 2say, "Water"? Well then U can still say, "see it was the environment! They were exposed 2too much water". If UR genotype so weak that even slightest bit of water, then wut is cause? H20 or weak brain?

  • I didn't want to answer in two blocks, but I must clarify. I don't think people with depression have a weak brain. Even the strongest of us can become depressed if exposed to enough, "Water". LOL, I mean worry/stress/anxiety/torture, etc. Point is though that some people do have weak brain (areas) that exposure to even the smallest particle of water, I mean, stress will cause them to become depressed. And you can not avoid exposure to water in this life. Cr*p, I mean stress. Get it?

  • @DeanLeysen Sapolsky himself, the guy who wrote the book that you mentioned, explains in this lecture why genetics play a huge rule in depression - /watch?v=NOAgplgTxfc

  • @DeanLeysen Yeah, genes are more correlation and not causation.

  • @DeanLeysen "genes can't make depression inevitable" and you know that for sure? Dean, you cannot know that and you certainly cannot know that for sure.

  • @DeanLeysen ... look how often u point 2 "genes" when u explain depression. hey i understand why people are desperate 2downplay the significance & effect that genes have on the way we think. The genetic component makes ppl feel helpless & doomed to be depressed, or mentally slow, or crazy. It takes away their hope. But for some... there is no hope. Disagree? Go find an extremely ignorant person.. if their mental state is due 2environment -then ucan educate them -but if its due 2genes. gd luck

  • @RoseCG Maybe it's not the genes that cause depression? Maybe it's depression that activates/triggers those genes?

  • @nielss4, U have a point, however, that's another question/point. Basically, the question was did environment cause depression or was it genetically inevitable? Unfortunately this is too big a topic to go into an in-depth discussion on YT. The simple facts are that people w/certain genetic makeups are more prone to become depressed whereas others with certain genes or combo's they ALWAYS develop depression. As proven by a huge body of evidence concerning genotyping & Twin studies.

  • @RoseCG I agree, but those who ALWAYS develop depression, might that also not be an environmental/societal factor? Maybe there's something wrong with society that the people with these depression genes - when exposed to society - simply cannot with. I'm simply saying ALWAYS is a huge word and people rely too much on genetics. It's not healthy. For example: - "Hey, why is this guy always so aggressive?" - "Hmm, he appears to have a genetic disorder." - "Ok, better give him some pills then."

  • @RoseCG Another thing is that I believe science is way too departmentalized/specialized and this is causing loads of misunderstandings. For example, I believe a biologist/geneticist who doesn't understand the first thing about psychology is a fool. I don't care how big his career is. This is because the physical and mental are always intertwined, it's called the bio-psycho-social nature. If you want to know more you really need to see this new documentary Zeitgeist Moving Forward (on youtube.)

  • @RoseCG i dont think genetics play a role right there as the studies may say

    here's what i think:

your mother or your father are in depression state, the house looks sad, fighting and arguing, or simply pure sadness, so that enviroment will obviously make the son depressive because in most cases the son first wish is to make their parents happy (at least the good ones)

thats just my point of view on how the things work

  • @Poneivanfa I agree with you. who could argue against your conlusion that such a terrrible life would make a lot if not most or almost evernyone depressed? but why do you ignore the obvious conclusion when the situation (concerning depression of course) is the reverse?

  • @RoseCG No he is right, it is the exact same concept with cancer, while you cannot inherit any cancers from your parents you can become more susceptible to possessing cells that will deviate.

  • @blashyrhkRAAA you prove youself wrong in your very statement. Yes, you're correct people inherit a susceptability 2cancer. And that my good man is due to GENETICS. Boom! Now pls admit that Genetics plays a role. Now 4 sum fun. i hav 2go becuz my neighbor & i r going 2climb a mountain. He comes from a small weak family & he is the twin of the brother who died from exhaustion trying 2keep up w/me last time i climbed that mountain. if this 1 dies, of course genetics had nothin 2do w/it. LOL

  • @RoseCG 1. My statement is correct. 2. Nobody can read your comment because you type like a mongoloid. 3. The previous statement is also correct. Questions?

  • @blashyrhkRAAA U lack the guts to cite the research that you so clearly misunderstand. I abbreviate because there's not enough space allowed to rip you the new asshole that you deserve. You are a moron. A moron who lacks any semblence of an understanding of science. And I'd be more than happy to engage in a civil debate with but it is not possible because you lack the courage to back up your twisted generalizations. You brain must be so small that it rattles around like a bb in a box car.

  • @RoseCG You sound pretty mad. Where is the research backing up your claim?

  • @RoseCG I don't think though genetics is causation, it is more correlation.
