Oh he will live and die with us like any of our pets. If i did want to rehome any of my pets, itd he free to the most scrutinized home and good hearted person. A good cockatiel can be bought from a private breeder (which is best) for 60-80 dollars easily. A store who sells less quality birds sells them at 130. Stupid. A sancuary/shelte can adopt out all kinds of teils, sexes, ages, tame or talking. Thats really the best way to go.

@ReemROXXX I bet your cockatiel is a female! Most of them wont talk. But they sometimes will copy whistles and weird sounds. Try recording a wolf whistle or something. And try to teach that, see if it works. Sunny by the way, has stopped "learning". I have NO idea why. I know he is capable of more. Way more. It's really frustrating. I'm sorry your birdy doesnt talk. But Sunny is super exceptional. I just got lucky.

Hi, i have a 1 1/2 year old male cockatiel as well his name is Zeus. I've had two cockatiel's, both from the same person and they'd die a few months after I 'd get them I loved them and they were very sweet, but I should've known not to purchase them because the birds were all bunched up in a cage and they were missing feathers in particular places. I was a beginner, but now I'm reading up on how to purchase a bird and to make sure they're healthy before I buy them, I never want that to happen again.

@CKALLY oh I ABSOLTELY know what you mean. I have a budgie and parrotlet barely tame at all. Then I have my too who is sweet. But ... I dont know, something like Sunny who always preferts to be with you 100% of the time and interact with you is just different. Nothing like it. Tiels are known as velcro birds (so are toos actually). And they are calm. get a baby get a baby ... did I say that enough? Lol Get a hand raised baby.

"Bad kitty! Meow!" that was hilarious. Our cockatiel talks but he doesn't respond like that much... he just says his phrases and that's it. About the only real responses he gives are when you bring him his water he'll say "Here's your water!" and sometimes respond to Good morning and Nite nite. Oh and mimicking the creaking cabinet door. xD

@OkMistahJ I don't know a thing about whether old birds are apt to talk less or more. But I bet you could teach him the trick!! If your bird does that wing thing sometimes ... like clockwork, say "bat bird"! Every single time. Then later one when you think he's sort of registering it, but he's not doing it, you can sort of drop your hand a smidge real quick so he has to put his wings up .. then you say batbird again.

It's more that he doesn't like us very much. He was used to his previous owner, but I don't know how old it is because he only got it a little while ago but it doesn't seem young. I think that's party why it's so antisocial. Also, the guy had pet snakes and big dogs that already killed his parrot (the tiel was a replacement for it) and his sugar-glider. I think it's kinda traumatized and I try to be nice and it just hisses and snaps like a snake. He'll do the wolf whistle, but that's about all.

How did Sunny learn to speak so clearly and articulate the words so well? I've seen many other birds who muffle or whistle their words. How long did you work with Sunny? My bird muffle his words.

I attribute it to several things. 1) I got him as a weaned baby that was hand raised, not just hand fed 2) i was just lucky .. he was born with an ability. and 3) a friend told me that when talking to a bird to never use a high voice, especially if you are female. Keep it low so they dont learn to be squeeky and whistley.

Just make sure you get a cockatiel book, and read up about them. They require you to take them out about 2 hours a day, and you to be able to clip toes, or wings, on a regular basis. Make sure you have someone who knows about cockatiels, like a vet or a friend, to help you out! good luck!

I had a white and yellow cockatiel, but he died just as he were getting tame.

He didnt have feathers(or whatever it is) on his head, but the shop owner said that

it would grow it again, it was just the other cockatiels that have picked him in the head.

They never grew out, so we took him to the animal doctor, and they also said that he were fine.

But after he was dead they said that it was because of the missing feathers

I really love your videos. You said your husband would have a serious breakdown if Sunny ever got out and flew away. I know that pain. My cockatiel Sammy was a lot like Sunny and he flew away March 7th. I have cried everyday for a month now. We did everything together and its one of the hardest losses I've ever had! A lot of people dont understand the bond you form with them. They are like little children and they offer unconditional love. Thank you for showing how special cockatiels can be.

i got my polly from petco. he looked so sad and lonely that i couldnt leave him there. he wasnt loved at all there and was cage bound and mostly mute. it has taken almost a year of me talking to him and giving him tons and tons of love to some what trust me. i want to get him a cage mate tho do u think that i should wait till he trust me more or do you think a bird friend will help? please if you can comment back i cant find anything that goes over this :/ thanks!!

Awe! You know it's to the point that I won't go look at animals at a pet store other than fish for that very reason lol.

I would not get a bird if you are wanting him to be a close buddy. If you have lots of time to give him, can give him lots of out of cage time, and you want him even tamer I would not do it. If you don't give him a lot of time, if he is in a cage and with no other birds in the house all day every day of his life ... sure. It would be a natural and happy thing for him.

I don't know anything about introducing and matching up cagemates, so do your studying so you don't buy another bird only to result in a failed relationship though. :)

But be prepared for the fact that he may bond with his buddy more than you. That scenario is bitter sweet. They are so happy, but you don't have the intimate friendship.

Yah, I know. And you are right. My too is almost flighted. My budgies can fly 25 feet. But Sunny can just float to the ground. Did that for a couple of reasons. Sunny travels with us everywhere, every day. So in order to do that, thats what we did to be safe. The other reason is because his owner, my hubby, is an emotional mess about his animals lol. He would have a serious breakdown if Sunny ever got out adn flew away. Luckily, Sunny is unqiquely happy with us though as you can see.

Get a big wide cage (as big as you can), they move horizontally.

Pick the bird that you connect with, looks healthy, is friendly. Let them pick you lol.

Spend as much time as you can with them. Work on the BOND right away.

These guys don't get neurotic if you cant' spend every waking second with them. But if you can? Thats okay too. They are velcro birds and are ecstatic just to be with you.

Anyway, yes, lots of tips. We got Sunny at 17 weeks of age. I'd not go younger than that. He was still whining at that age and bobbing his head. Just do your research on how they should be handfed, and ask the people how they did it and how long okay? It really makes a diff on the health of the bird and everything.

that was a nerve wracking thing ... we used baby clippers (human). Finally, we got a good wide perch with colored sand all on it for birds (really find sand). And put it where he uses it constantly. We've not had to trim claws now in two years!!!!

Maybe its not really a "him"? I mean how "sure" are you? the girls often wont talk. Either way, go to the main movie, the Sunny the talking Cockatiel or whatever, and read the side. I go into detail of how to teach them how to talk.

Another idea ... just teach him to whistle something simple to start with. A charge call (no speaking). Or a sound (a kiss). Go from there. Non speaking birds often mimic "sounds"

That was he easiest thing of all. Easier then teaching him to talk. You know how cockatiels get excited and flap their wings? Or they'll throw up their wings like sunny randomly? Anytime your bird puts his wings up, flaps, or heck even stretches big ... say something like "Airplane", "Superman" or batbird. EVERY single time he does it.  Over time, a lot of time, next thing you know, you'll be able to say the word and he'll do it! Who knows maybe even say it too.

You know, I tried doing what I did with Sunny on TWO budgies before him. And I had no luck. They don't say a single word. They are supposed to be rather prolific. I dont get it. I have a cockatoo and she is speaking a "little". Sunny is rather unusual. The only thing we did diff with him that might possibly be the reason for such a success is that he was/is out of his cage and with us all day every day. Very bonded. Lots of time involved.

aww..my tiel lilbird looks the same and my other one says what u doin too! infact i think hes startin to say give me kiss and a few other words. my oldest tought him come er..and they sing pretty songs too! and now my 10yr old female keet is sayin it too.lol that ferret song is adorable. can i ask how u got him to not be afraid of camra? cuz mine are terrified of my web cam.good tips by the way..i ll have to try that. how many birds do you have? thought i saw a amazon..and hurd a cockatoo.

GOOD question. It took me a YEAR for him to do this. What I did was distract him with other birds. I put Tika on my shoulder. She's not scared of it, so then he's not.
