That was sweet. I loved it that she was 'flirting' with him and insisted he dance with her. :) No matter how much she was in awe, just like Bette, she was in control. Whattagal.
@GlitterFreakify Haha. I guess she really knocked him off his feet that night, huh?
I heard Elton John talk about his own fall. He said, "I'm the only guy I know who can sing about 'I'm Still Standing' while falling from a 20' stage." lol
cherfan97 I like this song and agree it is better than some of the things we sing but its all good now because we are singing no air and i got a solo(:
It's interesting to see that Bing's microphone is apparently non-functional. Bette's voice miking doesn't change when he is late moving the mike over to her mouth, nor when she looks away to sing to the wings.
Guessing they both had hidden lapel mikes, and the visible wireless mike was a prop.
Bette and Bing would have loved and understood each other because they both came from the tradition of American show business that has sadly become just an 'industry'
@StoneyEnd444 From Gonzaga Uni website: " In 1910, he received the nickname "Bing", a shortened name of his favorite comic strip character "Bingo" from the "Bingville Bugle," a popular section in the local newspaper. Everyone, except Bing’s mother, would call him “Bing.”"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Pairing Bette Midler with Bing, is like sprinkling dandruff on a perfectly cooked piece of meat. Too bad one of your last times on stage would be with her, Crosby. Sorry fans, just my 2 cents.
Well your two cents doesn't buy my vote on your comment. Obviously Mr. Crosby was enjoying himself, and Bette Midler was a really big fan of his and respected him. Perhaps you might not care for her, but the fact that Bing did is all that matters.
Thanks so much for this gem! Great to come across these fabulous old duets! How lucky for Bette to sing with this legend! Now, Bette herself has become a legend.
Its amazing to stumble across stuff like this, I had no idea Midler did so much mainstream stuff in the 70's. She was kinda unheard of in the UK until maybe 'The Rose' and even then hardly a household name (other than on the Gay scene) until 'Beaches' and 'Wind beneath my wings'.
@burffle This was Bing's 50th Anniversary show business tribute. He was the one to fall offstage at the end. He spent time in the hospital recuperating. Later that year he traveled to Spain to play in a golf outing where he dropped dead on the course at the end of play. Ironic that he died the same year as Elvis, entertainers a generation apart. Crosby was by far a better actor and performer, yet Elvis has eclipsed him!
First off I am no lady. Second, when Bing Crosby died, more human ears had knowen/reconnized his voice then ANY other human voice on EARTH. I know, and I study entertainment as well as music. Ever hear of White Christmas? Silent Night? Adesta Fidelas? Or how about You are my Sunshine? All these singles outsold any single by Elvis and even the Beetles. Look it up yourself. Anyone can be trained to push a button on the air, it does not make you an expert in anything.
So again fool (Capt Chaos), what did Elvis eclipse Bing at? Rock N' Roll, well dugh! But what you implied, is Elvis outdrawed Bing, and outsold him!? Again I ask, at what? I like Elvis, I like him a lot. But you know what I heard? While he was doing those Vegas Shows, you could walk right up and buy a ticket. Never heard of ppl doing that for a Crosby Show. Did You? Oh hey, before becoming a nurse, I worked in a resturant for ten years. That must make me an expert at chickens!
@cliffshell Elvis borrowed from Dean Martin who borrowed from Bing Crosby. And all were great performers. Elvis the big, rock star. But Crosby and Martin, funny, consumate performers. Better in movies, clearly, then Elvis ever was. Bette Midler more like the last two, and a great, interpretive singer, in my opinion, influenced much by music of Crosby's generation.
@brelfan Now that's an honest and fair evaluation covering three generations of music. I entered the communications industry decades ago partially because of my admiration of Crosby, Como and others in their field. The only tunesmith that comes close this day in age is singer Michael Buble....in my opinion. I'm not quite sure what ThePattycake's ramblings were all about, but if he's a nurse, he better lay off the prescription drugs or quit posting while he's loaded!
You know, I think this might be the performance that Bette referred to when she said that her Dad only ever watched her perform once - and that was with Bing Crosby Her Dad thought Bing was a true performer, unfortunately he did not think the same of his daughter. This may very well be that performance! Well, I hope her dad was impressed - he should have been because his daughter is timeless.

Is Midler singing offkey or is that just her style for a song like this?
Crosby, like Elvis, could deliver a song right up to the moment he dropped dead.

"Lady" get out your little Webster's dictionary and look up the term "eclipse".
You'll find I used it in the right context. Having spent thirty plus years on the air
in both radio and television, I believe I know a bit more about entertainment trivia
than you do!
