Could be the car was a bit cold to run hard, as with most old Ferrari's running them hard while cool usually leads to expensive repairs. That could also be the reason hes grinding gears as well since most exotics of the day require the gearbox to be warmed up to shift smoothly and correctly.

Lamborghini Mira's were notorious for not being drivable until the box is warm.
