  • Elkie Brooks does a great version. Elkie had a European hit with this in 1978. Great singer.

  • Melissa's version is much better because she shows the wide range of her voice. Also, the favorite part of the song in my opinion is the trumpet at the end, which goes almost as high as she (Melissa) does. Awesome trumpet part, for sure.

  • Very twangy version

  • music is great here and i do not prefer slow- paced music . it is more somber.

melancholic backup singing with the wailing effect is stupendous. more of it was needed.

  • Wow! This one from Tokyo Music Contest in Japan. Yes, She got Grand Prize by this song. I actually remember this on TV. ありがとう。(Thank you)

  • He man

  • such a beautiful song.

  • que habra sido de la vida de esta mujer que canta tan lindo?

  • Nice , but I love the version by Elkie Brooks, a U.K. hit for her in 1978

  • The 70s and early 80s had some of the greatest music ever, you can not find music like this anywhere. I grew up with this music, awsome time in my life. Hundreds of friendships, and the hippy style way of life. Such long ago.

  • Xanadu, they're not the same song. Two different songs.

  • Wow, Rita & Stevie Nicks have to be the sexiest singers ever, what class!

  • why when trying to post does it show each time "Error, try again."

  • The best women voice i ever heard (ok after Streisand). i rediscovered her voice is amazing. Thanx for this video.

  • written by an Australian - Peter Allen

  • @MrNgawng With some help by the wonderful Carol Bayer Sager.

  • great voice and such a glow to her beauty, I love it.

  • Love the version by Elkie Brooks.

  • BAck before the Brittney Spears' cult of the school girl...when women were women

  • What a beautiful women with a special voice!

  • The singer and the song - just love it and pleasing to my ears .....

  • She needs ear prompts for her lyrics so now I wonder if the music is really prerecorded and she's just Lip singing.

  • I LOOOOOVE THIS SONG!!

  • This version is beautiful, it's very intimate and warm. I knew it from a solo album track by Yvonne Elliman, she's always great too.

Man, there were a lot of fine female singers around in that seventies era... I regret to say, but if I compare it to today... it seems yesterday was better.

  • @DaVooz Her sound is like velvet...

  • My ex-classmate won a singing contest with her own rendition of this song.

  • I had never heard any version other than Melissa Manchester's. thanks!

  • I thought this was written and originally performed by Peter Allen.

  • @gyrgrls It was . It was a hit for Elkie Brooks in the U.K.1978 Meliissa Manchester, in the U.S 1979.

  • This song brings back so many memories. Music had a purpose and a meaning then. Now its all about screaming & being naked. Boy do I miss music like this.

  • Rita is a beautiful singer, beautiful girl and a heart peirceing voice

  • What a beautiful voice. It is a joy to hear it.

  • i love tokyo..yo!

  • Yeah hold it all inside, become a self destructive druggie/alcoholic.

    Is this song for real?

    lol

  • She was a GREAT singer, what happened to her? Does she still sing?

  • @Getrealpeeps She is still singing and touring. Check her website for details.

  • @4205lr Thank's

    :)

  • In the mid 1980s, Rita found success vocalizing for movie soundtracks. In 1983, she recorded the song "All Time High" for the James Bond film Octopussy. The single was one of her two #1 hits on Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts. Coolidge also recorded the love theme from the movie Splash, "Love Came For Me".

  • In 1991, she recorded two Japanese pop songs, "Ame" (Rain) by Chisato Moritaka and "Rainy Blue" by Hideaki Tokunaga. She contributed vocals on the title track from the Roger Waters album Amused To Death, released in 1992. In 2004, Coolidge released an anthology covering her career, titled Delta Lady — The Rita Coolidge Anthology. In 2006, Coolidge released a jazz CD, And So Is Love.

  • This and the version by ELKIE BROOKS are the best.

  • I believed Dione Warwick sang this song also.

  • This is great! I would like to listen to non-live version of this song, too. Could somebody upload this song which was released from the album "All About Rita Coolidge"? I look forward to listening to it soon. Thank you for all!

  • This is great! Another good version has just been posted. Search:

---Jal Joshua Don't Cry Out Loud.---

The song is dubbed over a video but is the one from his album and is fantastic!!!!

  • PETER simplismente maravilhosa

  • Elkie Brooks version is amazing. Will always be my favourite.x.

  • Hi, do you have This Masquarade which was originally sung by her? I would really want to listen to it.. thanks..

  • This is so beeeaaayuoootifullll . . . I watch it heaps and is there anything better than watching RC singing this song? I think she and KK were at the end of their relationship too . . . soulful, rich, heartfelt . . . he tino ataahua hoki!

  • She looks so totally different here from her appearance in 1972. It's like two different people.

  • Learn how to hide your feelings .. Guys and Girls.....

  • easy to say...:-)

  • @pricechart2 Why should be learn to apparently be less human? Should we hide love, sadness or compassion? Why?

  • best version by far.............it's the sensitive interpretation. very soulful, very beautiful........makes it seem that this is a song about her...........no doubt was--her and kris- "they almost had it all........."

  • I know a few about them..but she was maximum..she's gret...nice voice and lyrics.

  • ehh reagge version what u on about elkie brooks and this lady did the best versions by far outclassing all potetential

  • No disrespect to this singer Rita, but there was a reggae version of this song and in my opinion was the best version.

  • She's awesome, voluptuous lady!

  • What a gorgeous woman and what a great voice

  • Great music.

    Joshua Spencer

  • ●I LOVE LITA! Beautiful Voice! From JAPAN 49 Years Old ♂

  • There's singing and THERE'S SINGING - what a rich soulful voice!

  • Rita ALL the way. Beautiful.

  • I like both Rita & Melissa, I think Melissa nailed it. Melissa's range seems to be better, at least for this song. Only posting 79 is sad. This song has been in many movies, TV shows & talent competitions, probably more than many #1.

  • amazing voice.............

  • i wanna die

  • i love it!!!!!!!!

  • Nice song, brings back memories of the 70's. Thank you for posting it.

  • Thank you all for those lovely comments on here. Just to keep you updated: Neither Melissa, Rita oder Elkie recorded the original - and of course not Shirley Bassey. It was done by the Moments in 1977 ("We Don't Cry Out Loud"). It charted only at # 79 on the r&b charts.

  • Elkie Brooks had a big hit in the U.K. and Europe with this.

  • "Don't Cry Out Loud" made it to # 12 in the UK (Elkie Brooks) and # 10 in the USA (Melissa).

  • Melissa and Rita were both AWESOME singers!

if only today's bitches had half their talent, i would be ecstatic!

  • Ha ha ha... thumbs up.

  • yeah! agreed

  • seems like yesterday... the video is quite clear...

  • Very good

  • well she is a very beautiful singer and very nice song as well thanks for sharing this

  • Lovely cover by Rita Coolidge, who covered in the eighties Peter Allen's smash hit "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love". I never heard this version of "Don´t cry out loud".

    Thanks for sharing it.

  • This is the first time I 've ever heard this song, it's beautiful thank you reddawg7246:)

  • I also like the version by ELKIE BROOKS.

  • her version is smoother than diana degarmo...

  • good job your my number 77.

  • has anybody got "Jealous kind " another great cover song by Rita

  • I LOVE "JEALOUS KIND BY RITA!

  • Great song, I also like Melissa Manchester's version.

  • thanks for this posting. I've never seen it before. Anything Rita sings, she owns! Love this lady and her voice!

  • que voz cada vez que escucho esa voz, es escuchar la voz de los angeles, pareciese que el cielo se abre y se escucha un canto y ese canto es la voz de Rita Coolidge

  • Peter Allen

  • Why are yiu telling me Peter Allen ???It was written by Peter Allen and Carol Bayer Sawyer.

  • By original version I understood the original version, sang by Peter Allen. Will you ever forgive me??? Oh please! I'm very small and weak!!! Snif!!! :(

  • I think i was written by peter allen

  • what a song sings by what a singer!!!!!!!

  • beautiful voice. does she has a video singing my crew and ladys not for sale?

if so, please let me know

    aloha

  • My father committed suicide in 1978 I had turned 10 y/o a few weeks later. This experience made me grow up faster than I wanted, so songs like this always made me cry. I remember it being such a touching and heartfelt song. I couldn't understand at that age exactly what the lyrics ment but somehow in my heart I understood the feeling behind it all. As if I could hear the soul behind the lyrics.

  • @davidscalling ....I cry for you, a little boy with a sad sad heart.....now your a man...

  • @davidscalling WOW....you hit me in the heart with this one...God bless you on emillion times over...Music soothes and helps heal.

  • A beautiful love song ...ty for sharing it with alllllll of us.

  • Kris,. you blew it

  • love rita coolidge miss her beautfiul voice

    angel

  • check out my singing version of this song!

  • She has a lovely voice I love her songs, Though I was born in 88, I seriously love alot of the 70s and 80's music sometimes more than my generation music. And interesting, it seems the Japanese called this song 'Anata shika mienai' which means:("I can't see anyone but you")

  • this song, you can sing as well as her only if it reflects your life,. and her life,. relationship with Kris Kristoferson was falling apart,. ending in divorce year later,.. just as she says in the song,. " we almost had it all,.." Kris's love for Jack Daniels destroyed it all,..although lyrics are not done for her originally,.they apply perfectly to her life,..

  • she really sings like she means every word,.

  • She wrote this song?

  • rita is da bomb!!! i have every album.

hope she comes to hawaii and perform

    love and aloha rita

    keiki

  • I prefer Rita's version of this Melissa Manchester hit to Elkie's version.

  • Vivofront!!!!! you are a SAD case you leave nasty comments ane then you close your account. This was a bit it in the U.K. for Elkie Brooks1978. She turned this song down in 1977. Too mainstream for her taste. Was convinced to record it...

  • Niiccee.....

  • Hi zinesilol88

I notice you declare in every youtube site how great Elkie's version of DCOL is compared to other great & talented singer/songerwriters like Melissa Manchester, Dame Shirely Bassey, Rita Coolidge etc. I enjoy the different interpretations of each of these great singers of this song and I hope you will also listen to them with an open mind. Elkie is also a talented singer and I do enjoy her songs but not her version of DCOL. For this song, only Shirley & Melissa are the best.

  • britmusic, Not on every site, only those with this song on it. For me Elkie Brooks version is the best. O.K. Manchester is too cabaret , Bassey over the top.

  • I love Melissa Manchester's version the best. Her's is the definitive version. As much as I like Rita's lovely voice, she wasn't able to supply the powerful vocals needed in this anthemic song. Her take was so laid back that she didn't really go anywhere with the song.

  • This song was very popular in Japan (1979's)

Is there Japanese version of this song?

  • i love you rita....... please have a concert here in then philippines...

  • I am also a singer, and have been for over 15 years. I didn't mean it in an insulting way, sorry you took it as such. I just don't particulaly like Elkie's cover of it, that's all. I am sure she's phenomonal singer, just a preference. Same with my opinion of Rita's cover.

  • Shirley Bassey's and Melissa Manchester's versions are better, but not bad. I like Rita Coolidge too, just not on this song

  • whereas I think Elkie Brooks is too bubble gum sounding for it. I think Melissa's is the best because of that sound

  • Bubble gum what a stupid comment, with No foundation. Elkie Brooks has a GREAT voice. I am a singer, so a good judge.Try to make a educated comment.

  • Beautiful song and beautiful lady.

Rita's face and voice seem to radiate grace and warmth and a fragile kind of tenderness.

  • ..haven't heard this version before, the original always sounds good but this one sounds more relaxing..more mellow

  • Very nice...but Shirley Bassey does it much better.

  • Two great version's by ELKIE BROOKS on You Tube.

  • many many thanks for posting it - beautiful!!

have you all heard "All Time High"?

  • PREFERE THE ELKIE BROOKS VERSION.

  • In 1979 I was at this Tokyou Music Fes,

    and 29years past, now I'60years.

    sound is so good.

    Thanks for posting .
