If you really want to hear for yourself take a song from power metal before phil started putting that growl in his voice and speed it up you will identify very quickly that this is still him just sped up a touch, not to mention you can hear it easily in vinnies drumming. Really, I guess something happened with Phil back in late 80's. His voice really changed. I don't mean his later drug addiction — he just really began to sing very different. Though I like both of his voices, but this one's just great!

This is the best live version of Cemetery Gates ever. Phil Anselmo has never, ever been this good. His voice is just so clean. It might be even better than the album version in my opinion. Amazing. Pantera was, and still is the seed that every metal band from Lamb of God to Mastodon grew out of.

its not tuned higher, for some reason the recording is being played faster that what it was recorded at so it does the chipmunk effect and makes everthing sound higher.
no i dont think thing that this is sped up, i think since phil's voice was still higher pitched at the time, they tuned it closer to E or right on it, cause right after recording CFH did they tuned just slightly above E flat.

Does Terry glaze sing on this one ? Because, in every video I have watched, Phil does not sing the last great part ("gates!"). Anselmo is a good metal vocalist but just check Dream Theater's cover of Cemetery Gates...Labrie nails the end but I do not think that Phil could do it.
Listen to the demo of this song phil nails everything. the vocals that phil started doing on Cowboys From Hell were very harsh and demand a lot from the vocal chords There for making it hard to hit clean notes in his upper register from the hoarseness cause by all the screamy thrashy kinda vocals. actually, this is an old tape. over time it's been ruined so it's running like a fifth faster than normal. enough to only notice a higher voice, if you slow this down a tad in speed not temp, the voice will deepen to normal. this voice is un-naturally high, if you look up 'pantera 1989 live' you can tell, he had a normal voice back then too. his CFH era voice is his pre-CFH era voice

yeah something aint right with the pitch...another way you can tell is by the speed...its a little faster...almost as if the recorder was running out of battery power...either way the band sound great...Phil rules with the high notes!

Phil's voice changed as Hetfield's one did, and Pantera was a "Party band" backstage ... they all were hard smokers/drinkers as we all know. There was no way Phil could preserve his voice unfortunetly, because of their way of life and the "strengh" of his lyrics

For those who still doubt this is Phil singing, this is definitely him. It's sad he lost this pure voice, but we've got to remember that many lyrics had to be "shouted", and the same thing happened to James Hetfield ... the difference between Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All is incredible.

It is. The old recording got messed up a bit, and thus making the whole thing play at a higher pitch. It is Phil, allright.
Notice the guitar/bass is tuned higher than usual as well.

actually, this is an old tape. over time it's been ruined so it's running like a fifth faster than normal. enough to only notice a higher voice, if you slow this down a tad in speed not temp, the voice will deepen to normal. this voice is un-naturally high, if you look up 'pantera 1989 live' you can tell, he had a normal voice back then too. his CFH era voice is his pre-CFH era voice
But yes, this is in fact Pantera

bullshit ive listened to terry glaze in his early years with pantera, dosent sound nothing like phil here! one of the reasons phil became the singer was because he was better phil was an amazing vocalist when he was young.
