@jpeditor um, these people weren't born when Hitler was aligned with Stalin. And really nice going with godwin's law with inovking Hitler, when Hitler has nothing to do with those statements attributed to ole marty.
I'm a Harvard student. I've read quite a bit of Peretz's more controversial quotes. I haven't seen anything "racist" in them. Controversial? Yes. Debatable? Of Course. Larry Summers got into hot water because he remarked that women may have a lower aptitude for math. Yet, there is plenty of real evidence to suggest he was right. This is the same. I think my progressive student colleagues are more concerned with attacking dissent using ad hominem charges of bigotry rather than debate the truth.
the quote about Palestinians contributing nothing but terrorism to civlization is vile. it's just nasty, rancid shit that adds nothing of value to serious debate. maybe the quotes about the blacks arent inherently racist, but so much of what the man says about Arabs and Muslims is fucking disgusting. If you took Arab and Muslim and switched it with "jew" you would think you were reading Mein Kampf.
I started reading The New Republic in 1981 as a Student in Ann Arbor. Over 30 years I have never seen a better written, researched or topical magazine. Marty Peretz is one of my heros.
The young people chanting and marching obviously don't read much and were recruited by the wacky, Shehan, Left.
If Marty Peretz is a racist, then just about everyone is.
Yes, I know, everyone is a racist. But these folks are making a huge mistake with this attack.
You can disagree with a religion without condemning all of its adherents. Using the word stupid does make you borderline bigoted, but condemning a whole group of people is way over the borderline.
What I really hate is the OP's need to put in a soundtrack. This is all-too-common on YouTube, but in 99.9% of all videos, the soundtrack actually DETRACTS from the point that one is trying to make! I was much more interested in hearing what the protestors and others were saying and chanting, than listen to that old 50's song over and over again until I wanted to vomit!.

This is so great... Unfortunately there are still a lot of blacks that think the majority of whites are racist. Seeing this video of a diverse group of students that are predominately white standing up for what's right and condemning racism really gives me hope and I will be sure to show this video to the black friends of mine that think that way about caucasians.
Interestingly how Nick Kristof, the person who first publicized Peretz' anti-Muslim slur, agrees with Peretz about how shameful Muslim support and/or silence about Sudan, persecution of Bhaihs in Iran, Indonesia's "cleansing" of East Timor, etc. is. Can we make a youtube video for that or do you have a kegger you need to get to?
Racist? Well, yes, Peretz' statement about Muslim life was racist. So are 99% of his hypocritical, rich white critics, who couldn't lift a finger to write (let alone protest) about a legion of true human rights atrocities. Because they first took the time to press Harvard to, say, divest from Sudan? Because 400,000 dead and who knows how many more raped and wounded is a lot more important than one cranky professor? Right. Upon graduation they'll be whoring themselves like all the rest.
These quotes are supposed to make him seem wrong? Even out of context they all seem somewhat reasonable based on the what we have seen in the world over the last decade.
Here we have a bunch of ignorant, privileged brats whipping themselves into a self-righteous frenzy over nothing. Still, it makes them feel morally superior, and that's the real point of this shabby little demo.
@gordyl Who's acting morally superior? You just cast snide, malicious aspersions over people trying to do some good. And you're accusing THEM of feeling morally superior?
I'm a longtime New Republic subscriber and I learned to really hate Marty Peretz for turning that revered journal into fishwrap that published The Bell Curve, Camille Paglia's ravings, Betsy McCaughey's rancid "journalism", and dorks like Fred Barnes. If you're a right-winger (i.e., a bigot), you'll love Peretz for his Islamophobia and racism. Then you'll deny that you're even bigoted. Kinda like Peretz himself.

Here’s how Islam works (source CIA: The World Fact Book (2007)).
As long as the Muslim population remains ~1% of any given country they will be regarded as a peace-loving minority and not as a threat to anyone. They will vote to the liberal left pushing larger amounts of Islamist teaching through the schools through textbooks. In fact, they may be featured in articles and films, stereotyped for their colorful uniqueness:

@hexag1 Firstly, you're completely missing the point of the protest. The protest was not simply to denounce a bigot (there will always be bigots), but to protest Harvard University's decision to honor a person (in the name of all it's students) with such reprehensible views.
@hexag1 Secondly, let me refer you to the 2003 case where a gift of $2.5 million was made to Harvard University's Divinity School by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates. When it came to light however that he had a history of associations with holocaust deniers, protests ensued, leading to the eventual return of the money by Harvard. Case in point: Harvard University students are in fact equal opportunity protesters of bigots.
@hexag1 By the way, people like you really should go out and get to know people of other cultures and religions. You'd be shocked to realize that they actually happen to be human too.
Despite the nasty things the man said, as a liberal, its hard to be proud of a large mob surrounding somebody and scaring the shit out of them. it reminds me of the angry mob hunting frankenstein, or maoists harassing their victims. This is what progressivism looks like? I'll go back to bong hits.
