but if you squeeze 糸 and 色　into one character → 絶 disconnect

Add 命 and you have 絶命(zetsumei)　disconnect life → i.e., death not ok.

Technically his name doesn't mean "Death". The kanji for the name "Mikoto" means "life". But when you squeeze together the kanji for his surname (making it one character instead of two) and put it next to the kanji for his given name, it reads "death".
