WHAT THE?? The title says, 'How To Install the Rear Derailleur...', yet, when the video starts, IT'S ALREADY INSTALLED and the first words are, "After installing the rear derailleur.....". I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO INSTALL THE DARN THING!!!
i have a shimano slx in the rear. it was not switching properly so tried to adjust it. made it better but now when i switch down from eight gear, it does nothing and then pushes over the 7th gear to sixth. help?
How can someone as thick (the uploader) as that, have the right to call people thick? he don't even know what the title means, or what the video's about, so i highly doubt he has a dick.
Meant to say the derailleur hanger is designed to bend so your derailleur doesn't get bent or ruined. If you have a cheaper derailleur (my sram X.4 runs about $25) than usually you won't have the hanger as the hanger usually costs about $15.
Check the alignment of pulleys when making adjustments. It's easy to bump your derailleur and knock the pulleys out of alignment, which if this happens you'll need to replace the derailleur hanger in most cases. If you have an expensive derailleur you'll usually have a hanger (cheap part which will bend before your derailleur does). I found this out the hard way after seeing the top pulley lined up with my chain and not understanding why my rear derailleur was still slipping into higher gears.
The video title says 'how to install' so how exactly do you install one? I know the description says to just use an allen key to attach it, but how? which bit goes where and how do you attach the cable to the derailleur? The exact steps for installing one might seem blatently obvious to you and not worth explaining but how to recrystalise chemical compounds is just as obvious to me. Don't assume everyone knows how to do it just because it's obvious to you, because they don't.
thanks for the video you douche bag it helped a lot but knowing a i got it from such a prick who writes in the description about how think people are for not knowing how to do this is just gay as shit you sound like a stuck up biker piece of shit
Missing crucial beginning. Why do they start with "after installing the rear dérailleur"?.. I thought this video is "How to install and ajust"... But they miss the install part completely!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stormy, sorry, but I'll take the "out moded" systems that have worked beautifully AND SIMPLY for a century (who says it's unreliable?). I want something I can fix and maintain myself (who says it takes high skill?). A bike is elegant and needs little innovation beyond better materials (lighter/stronger) - the only ones who disagree are companies that want to increase profits with the next new thing. They're evil :)
Adjusting a rear derailleur for a hardtail mountain bike is easy like in this video. It's a different story for a full suspension mountain bike because of the rear suspension and rear frame moving up and down which can make it harder to dial in your adjustments. Just one of the reasons I love hardtails instead of full suspension and reason I ride one.
Derailleur's and the shifters that operate them are by their very nature prone to A) Rapid wear, which requires B) Constant adjustment. It's an out dated out moded system that'll be dead and buried within 10 years. The Vid presupposes perfect conditions, but informs I guess.
Right now you could use a Rohloff hub, the same hub the current world record holder used to cycle around the globe; Gone are the rear sprockets, front chainrings, both derailleurs and the chain, along with all the maintenance issues associated with this sort of setup. Essentially it provides a 525% range which equates to approximately 24x32 at the low end, and a 44x11 at the top
But theres plenty of innovation coming and its just around the corner, the old style chain and derailleurs as I said before have had the best of it, they are just plain unreliable and require real skill to set up. People dont want that, they just want something that works for long periods without constant dicking around with it, and frequent expensive replacement.
yeh but that rohloff hub costs £600 if i'm not mistaken. or was it £1000 (?). i work in a bike shop, and a guy who's plannin to do a 1-2 year expedition around south america got one of those. deyre very heavy....not sometin a commuter would want i think - not2mention how pissed of youd be if one got stolen. this applies to normal internal hubs too - sturmey's etc...they're expensive to replace. yes they r great, but their production costs have got to decrease in order to atract da mass market.
I was only talking about now re: the Rohloff , weight isnt an issue you save on all the parts you no longer need its similar in overall total weight. Initial cost is higher, but theyre good for 150,000 miles plus, youd have to buy an awful lot of derailleurs to cover the same and waste your own time buying, fitting, adjusting ( you need a bike stand to do that properly another £100) Other advantages no duplication of gears, who cares about cable stretch, stop suddenly in a hi gear np
@StormyTgurl They said that 10 years ago and the new options are just not good enough for all types of biking, a good rear mech is easy to fit and adjust (My 10sd XT) but today the SLX 9 speed is a class a C*** on my mates bike!!
ok fuckface - since you're so fucking stupid - i'll break it down for you by the numbers.
the video failed to demonstrate unscrewing the b-tension screw, properly aligning the derailleur so the screw is above the d.hanger and fastening the der. to the d.hanger.
there's a reason why my comment is 5+ thumbs shit for brains - it because your video doesnt do it by the numbers. beginners need to see it done by the numbers - which your video fails to do.
@unvise are you saying you learned how to use an allan key to attach the rear mech before you learned how to ride a bike? Cause I learned to ride a bike when I was like 6. . .just saying

missing Step 1...attached the new derailleur to the hanger and put chain on derailleur by removing the pulley wheel or breaking hte chain and feeding it through.
Why is there a soundtrack? It's a freaking derailleur.
