  • Oh, you did a good thing...

  • good riddance News of the World

  • i always think the first line says, "and masturbate there hair."

  • @metallicjohn hahaha i thought he said "masturbate his head."

  • I am 45 and seeing the Police twice on their reunion tour was a big, big thrill for me back n 07, 08. An even bigger thrill would be to see Morrissey, Marr, Rourke, and Joyce on stage for a series of reunion tours. It would be great to hear that they have put aside petty differences and realize that all four could make a boatload of money. Great songs like this one and even greater albums prove that we the fans are the big losers in not seeing them together again.

  • how did I live almost 25 years and not hear this song?

  • Brazilians listening to The Smiths?! That made my day!! :D

Nos gostamos do que eh bom!!!

  • " I'm not happy and I'm not sad" thank you mozz and johnny for ....everything!

  • this song has been on and off in my head all day and right now, i dont know if this song is actually playing or not... maybe i just had one too many...

  • Sou brasileira, comento em ingles

    e curto demais the smiths.........

  • @VanSanc the smiths are the best, you listen...the dream has gone but the baby its real...

  • @Jessy1122100 , im from toluca, méxico...

  • @VanSanc The smiths or Legiao? Both!!! hhahah

    Valeu lindaaaa!!! ;)

  • @asilvestr eu te pego y toda esa mierda... all that kind of shit!!!

  • wow i live my life without this song.......

  • "The dream has gone but the baby is real."

Such a powerful sentence, capturing the essence of the working class. (From the play "A Taste of Honey")

  • <3

  • Smooth as a razorblade.

  • holy shit this song is good.

  • I always get chills when I listen to this song.

  • Wonderful, still.

  • took me back to mid 80's manchester, morrisseys biting lyics came flooding back.

the power of music to jog bygone feelings is mindblowing

  • Probably one of the best songs they ever did.

  • when I first heard this song I thought when he said the news of the world I thought he meant all the troubles in the world because she abonded the kid so the kid is all alone

  • She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool! - what! Bam! Yeah, he wrote that POW!

  • My favourite by far. Oh drums! X

  • My comment asking what the News of the World was is a joke... because the paper folded recently with a scandal, etc.

  • thats crazy...i just happened to hear this song for the first time ever while my roommate is going to have an abortion tomorrow morning...true history.

  • News of the World is a newspaper in UK

  • @STLCTY69 Not Anymore..lol

  • News Of The World is newspaper in UK.

  • ooooooooooooooo how I like this :)

  • I'm always amazed that every time I listen to a Smiths song, I hear something new. "Oh, save your life because you've only got one." Morrissey isn't just using the old cliché 'you've only got one life, so live it well.' The girl literally had two lives when she was pregnant -- the baby's and her own. Now that she's had an abortion, she only has one. Genius lyrics.

  • "Wrap her up in the News of the World". What's the News of the World?!

  • Comment removed

  • @speranza91986 From the context I would think he is referring to wrapping the child in newspapers.

  • Google it. It's a British newspaper. Well, it's not any more...

  • @CodedRhythmTalk Yeah, that's a great double-meaning lyric by Morrissey.

  • can everybody just shut the fuck up and focus on enjoying the music?

  • @ciccarello923 so, why dont you ?

  • <333

  • ahhhh Morrisey your a true master of your craft. BRAVO!

  • this is about abortion?

  • @mrpelon1000 based on a play called "a taste of honey".

  • this sounds like...at least in my ears...kinda about abortion?

It could apply to alot of things, that's the genius that is Moz and The Smiths...but it sounds like that's what it could be too.

  • d(-_-)b - The Smiths ♫

  • abortion.....tough shit. fuck them with easy answers.

  • @bmbenblog tru q's, hard answers homie. lots o love to u.

  • He said he'd cure my ills....he didnt and never will......bastard

  • "And i'm not happy,and i'm not sad"...best line in this song

  • thegoodteacher(dot)com

  • So reminds me of my ex. She was Bi polar. The words fit exactly. How I felt etc, even down to her poetic insight in times of lucidness & outright lunacy or foolishness when in a manic phase. Her ability to make me laugh out loud but also how she could have me in tears through sheer frustration or hurt. Me sitting down one night realising I had to leave her or end up either going nuts myself or even ending it all! I know the song may have a different meaning but for me thats the meaning!...:)..:(

  • @stevobath just because shes bipolar you left her whatevr

    yeah its a good song

  • @marinarodrigues07 I didnt leave BECAUSE she was Bi polar. I left because I could do nothing to help her & for both my & my Daughters sake.

Dont criticise what you probably have never & hopefully will never have to deal with. Leaving her wasnt easy. There is a difference in leaving someone BECAUSE they have an illness. My altruistic tendencies only stretch so far.Anyone who knows what living with a Bi polar sufferer is like will understand the difficulty.

  • @marinarodrigues07 Just as I thought. Youre a kid.Only naivety about life would lead to such a crass comment.Im old enough to be your Dad & then some!

  • @stevobath Ridiculous your comment. I dont know his comment, but how long you have been alive doesn't says who you are. How many years do you think I have?

    14. This is a beautiful song from The Smiths, a genial band. Fighting here, is like prohibited, you are agressing the musicians.

  • @matadorzx1 LIFE EXPERIENCE COUNTS. If someone replies to a comment I left, which incidently was about the memories this song gave me,then I have a right to reply. Whose aggressing anyone? Who says its not a great song? Your comment is ludicrous. Who we are CHANGES through lifes experiences. Its not a static thing- you WILL change as you get older & thats inevitable, though obviously character traits are formed early in life. Now go do your homework or you wont get your pocket money!

  • @matadorzx1 As for The Smiths being 'genial', I suggest you take a look at more of Morisseys lyrics. If youre so knowledgable about them, youd know that Morissey was/is famous for his ascerbic wit & observations along with his far from 'genial' personality. I really think you should read the thread of a comment before shooting youre mouth off. How can you objectively criticise?Leaving dumb messages 'IS LIKE PROHIBITED'.Youre parents shouldnt have left the U18 child lock off!

  • @stevobath With a word I can screw your trash coment. "Stupid".

    Go read some philosophy.

  • @matadorzx1 Who do you suggest in your FINITE wisdom that I should read? How am I agressing the musicians? Go hug a tree.Oh I see youve 'aged' some 8 years! Do you think that appearing older will give your views more kudos?I remember when I was 22.Thought I knew all about life.As I said originally. You should have read the thread before your crass comment.I wasnt agressing anyone, just relaying a life story. So SHUT THE FUCK UP & do your homework like a good kid.

  • Can't stop listening to this <3

  • This song its just like life, best parts are in the begining and in the end

  • b e a u t i f u l

  • 13 ppl still have their eyes closed!

  • @xanatos137 or ears.

  • doing something and feeling regret. The conflicting mind.

  • Needs more bass.

  • Hatful Of Hollow is the shit

  • @TheWheels777 Dont listen to it then!

  • @stevobath It's a compliment man! Saying something is the shit means it's brilliant. I love Hatful of Hollow, it's my favorite Smiths album.

  • @TheWheels777 Sorry. I misread..Thought you said it was shit! :)

  • Great song and a great band!

  • Incredible bass line, that first note is SO GOOD! Andy Rourke has to be up there near the best...so creative

  • OMG, I could listen to this song like a thousand times and I never get tired, is just amazing!!

  • Works on all levels. Contender for best Smiths song.

  • I think the title is actually called "The Night I Openend My Eyes"

  • @MsLunaLullaby 0:19 "This night has opened my eyes"

  • @zanizone45 Just because they SAY something in the song doesn't mean that it's the title. I own the album, I looked. "The Night I Opened My Eyes" Not trying to be a dick...but the album doesn't lie.

  • @MsLunaLullaby I'm sure you're not a dick. But it must be a misprint.

  • @MsLunaLullaby

No, "this night..." source = lyrics

  • @Samzonish I was just saying, I own the album and that's what it said.

  • @Samzonish Maybe I own a shit copy of the album...I dunno jeeze

  • what does this song mean?

  • @johnnboy77 The girl and guy were young and ended up having a baby, which they drowned in the river.

  • vocals are so gorgeous

  • the dreamy romantic vocals

  • that grown man of 25 didn't cure any of that girl's ills. never did. never will.

  • Music of thinking, of reflexion.

  • She could have been a poet or she could have been a fool <3 I could listen to this over and over again

  • I saw there wasn't a lyric video to this awesome song so I made one. Look on my channel to watch it.
