When you hear "thunder" you're actually hearing the air molecules slamming back into each other because the lightning actually drives them apart. When lightning is close enough to you, or in this guys case, ON YOU, you won't hear it because more or less you're apart of it.
Are you aware that this video is used in defensive driving classes? I just got a ticket last month and had to enroll in a Texas defensive driving class. This video is in the program.
0:09 I kept replaying it. It sounds like a gunshot. Pretty crazy shit. Where was the majority of the damage? By the way, I know it's not a laughing matter but I couldn't help but chuckle.
this may be one of the funniest videos on youtube. watching just once doesn't give it any justice, it gets funnier every time. oh yea glad your not dead by the way
When lightning strikes, most of the thunder goes out from the main shaft of the return stroke. If you or your car is at the bottom, most of the sound goes out over the top of you, and you don't hear it as a result.
Simple rule of thumb: if you hear thunder, the lightning's missed you.
once i was like holding a mike connected to my friends ps3 and then a HUGE lightning bolt struck right by his house and we all heard it, then i got like a huge shock in my arm like from the mike. hahaa.
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS SO COOL... I mean, I feel bad for you, that must have been SO scary... So, that was pretty odd. Talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time... Also, i showed everyone this vid; they will never drive in a thunderstorm again. By the way, were you chasing a tornado?
You don't hear thunder when you're this close to a strike. Thunder is generated from the huge expansion of superheated air which breaks the speed of sound, and moves out from that center point. However, if you're at the focal point (or near enough to the focal point) of a strike, you'll hear nothing, because the shockwave never hits you.

you cant hear thunder because it was right on top of him and it spreads out i guess. say if u were somewhere else you would of hearded it but just because it was on top of him he didnt hear. i hope that made any sense
my guess is because when u seee lighting u can count till the thunder and how many seconds = miles away the lighting was so since it hit u it prolly made the noise at the same time and u were to scared to hear it or reconizge it but idk lol but i love ur vid, i put on my facebook and myspace

Oh my f$cking god, this brought tears to my eyes - I was laughing so hard. Thank goodness my boss didn't see me watering up, woulda thought I was crying or hysterically sobbing. Your reaction is priceless. "OH MY GAAAAARD!" Love how you continue to freak out after you beep at the car ahead of you. Wish the video were longer so we could hear more reactions. :D Favorited.
Yes, that's the reason I freaked out like it did lol. The lightning burst the HAM radio antenna cable in four places, filling the interior with smoke.
good thing u were in a 4Runner. quality vehicle right there haha. we used to have one, they are still my favorite trucks. That must be the scariest thing ever gettin hit by lightning.
About a month ago, I was walking across my high school campus and a red bolt struck a tree about 50ft away. Knocked me down and blinded me for about 30 seconds, excessively loud too. Id hate to hit by something like that.
Look up how many people get struck by lightning in the US every year. It's a pretty decent number for something that is so rare. That's pretty much the same reaction I had when it struck my tent out camping. My ears couldn't stop ringing and I burnt my feet because thats where the lightning grounded.
I had lightning strike the neighbors gutter when I was outside watching a storm. The percussive blast knocked me off my feet. I would say it was 40feet from me. I was so freaked out I was hyperventilating rapidly.
Okay, how would you explain the flat tires, police car, fried magnet, and weld marks on the tire rims? There are plenty of hoaxes on YouTube, but I can assure you this strike was real :)
Dude your reaction is the best! The horn honking wins!
To anybody saying he overreacted: I've had lightning strike 2-3 blocks away and I can say even *that* kind of encounter pumps you up with much adrenaline you want to pop. I couldn't imagine it 3 feet away!
It's amazing how hundreds of thousands of volts at tens of thousands of amps can make a person continuously spew expletives.(especially the 4 letter ones)It happens to everyone. :) I saw alot of smoke and sparks. Was that the coax evaporating, or your equipment? maybe both?? Did you happen to survey the internal damage of the radio?
HAHA great video but do you think you overreacted a little? I mean I have never had my vehicle struck so I don't know how I would have reacted but still, you were quite hysterical! Also why did you keep honking? Did you think that would somehow cause your car to be unstruck...LOL!!!!!!!!
hehe I don't think anyone can really prepare for such an exprience. But the real reason I panicked is in the description... when the interior of the truck filled with smoke I thought I was caught between electrified doors and an engine fire. Looking back, I realize now the current dissipated quickly so it would have been okay to get out. It's just something you don't want to be wrong about ;)
They were the only folks on the road and I didn't know them... probably retired folks who wanted to get the heck out of there. I wonder if somehow a "step leader" might have gone up off their RV, sort of "setting up" my truck to be hit. I guess the HAM antenna was the tallest pointed object for miles around.
theres another video here on you tube on car struck by lightning, you actually dont hear the thunder only if you were about 15 feet away from the strike because of the sound barrier created by the heat wave of the lightning. very interesting.
''OMG!!! the car has just got struck by a FUCKING LIGHTINING!!%$#@^%$#'' lol dude that was HILARIOUS, you might have had upseted God, he reached a pointing finger at ya :].
Well done on the pause to catch your breath, followed immediately by more yelling. Haha. Course you never know how you react to get blasted by lighning until it happens to you...
hehe yeah that makes me laugh too. I don't use that saying much these days *nervously looks around* The insurance covered all the damages, thankfully! Lightning is covered under Comprehensive insurance.
Thanks for that! For a couple of months after this I was very scared of lightning, but after a while that went away. It was such a one-on-a-million event, I figure it won't happen again anytime soon, if ever. I guess I'm still trying to figure out if there's a reason why this happened, or if it was just by chance.
The lightning flattened three tires, took out the HAM radio, and also destroyed a chip in the truck's engine used to regulate cruise control. So, some electronics were damaged, but I was also shocked that the truck started right back up later on. There are also bits of melted copper in the upholstery from where the antenna cable burst in three places.
Did you fill out lottery after that? :)

the thunder can only be heard when you are further away from the lightning strike since the sound expands to the side not downwards

It's because the thunder is the lower frequencies. The farther away you are, the deeper sound you hear. Much like fireworks, except a larger scale. The sound of an exploding m100 is a "snap bang" up close, but 2 miles away you don't hear a snap but a concussion and boom. Because the lightning strike came from the vehicle and went outward, the snap explosion is audible.

theres another video here on you tube on car struck by lightning, you actually dont hear the thunder only if you were about 15 feet away from the strike because of the sound barrier created by the heat wave of the lightning. very interesting.

Good to know your OK, hope it went well with the insurance company.

hehe yeah that makes me laugh too. I don't use that saying much these days *nervously looks around* The insurance covered all the damages, thankfully! Lightning is covered under Comprehensive insurance.

I was struck in 2004 and was outside the chase vehicle holding the camera. Plenty of colorful metaphors will fly from you mouth at times like that!

damn that shit must have scared you. Now that you look back on what happened what do you think. I'm glade you were okay and escaped with no injuries.

Thanks for that! For a couple of months after this I was very scared of lightning, but after a while that went away. It was such a one-on-a-million event, I figure it won't happen again anytime soon, if ever. I guess I'm still trying to figure out if there's a reason why this happened, or if it was just by chance.

It's hard to believe your vehicle's electronics were not taken out.
