@rykera69 ..The territory of nawdays Hungary was part of Dacia in that times.latter on slavic farmers immigrated there..Avarian had short lived state there untill taken by the Prorto Bulgars for few centuries..and late after that in 10th century Hungarians pushed by pechenegs and Bulgarians moved in Panonia..the time coincides when the gypsies spera in Europe maybe you are one clan of them .nothing to do with attila..They made very good servants to the Germans..and created their state after 1918
@AhzekAhriman1 Me too...it's as if he is laughing and saying "look to what has happened to all these poor civilizations and empires...they have failed...unlike our great one which will last forever..."
The Byzantines acknowledged themselves as the Roman Empire long before the destruction of the western roman empire. Other kingdoms however called them the Byzantines because the Western Pope crowned a German as the "holy roman emperor".
So the Byzantines WERE in fact the Remnants of the Roman Empire, they actually were the living body of the Roman Empire. It's citizens acknowledged it as so, they never called themselves the Byzantines, but that's what the rest of the world called them.
@DJBuckCallYo so this is what you learn in your college? So sad!Because the term "byzantines" was used after 15th century.Western Europeans, Arabs and Scandinavians called the empire "imperium Greacorum" yunanium etc. because of the Greek identity of the empire. The only Roman thing about the empire was the law, everything else was Greek not Roman. After the fall of Rome there was nothing Roman in the whole world, Rome and roman empire came to an end in 5th century.
@brennusduxgallorum Their allegiance was to Rome, the peoples' loyalty all to Rome, their central Government from Rome, their emperors of Roman Blood.
Just because their culture differed to Roman culture does not eliminate the fact that they bared the banner of Rome, and fought for it until the very end. It is no wonder that people started using the term Byzantines in the 15th century because by the 15th century the Eastern Romans Collapsed, while the western historians just snickered away.
@DJBuckCallYo After 6th century their allegiance was to Constantinopolis, the people's loyalty all to Constantinopolis, their central goverment from constantinopolis, their emperors mostly of Greek blood (and constantinopolis BTW was located in the heart of greek world). Also their customs and language was Greek, and the last but not least including constantinopolis the vast majority of the most important cities in the empire were Greek.about the name byzantine post me pm to post you source
@brennusduxgallorum Their language may have changed but they still called themselves citizens of Rome, I find it ridiculous that you would side the western pope in this Matter.
The Eastern Roman Empire IS THE BYZANTINES. They were the remnants, and still even though they changed culturally and socially were the only direct link to the Roman Empire. Look it up, they have always acknowledged themselves as Romans.
You really need to get your facts straight, try reading once in a while.
@DJBuckCallYo Pretty much since to them, when the Western Empire was crashing and falling the Eastern half plugged its fingers into its ears and looked away.
Then they shouldn't have split from the Roman Church. Had they remained in Catholic circles, then the other kingdoms wouldn't need a crusade to justify going there to protect the Byzantines.
@HolyknightVader999 That's true, I think that if they had remained 1 church the crusades would have taken place centuries earlier... saving the Romans from collapse. Who knows what it would be like if the Romans survived till this very day. ;)
@HolyknightVader999 the vast majority of their sources say "yunanium" which means "ionian"
I know that they also called it rum because the Greek population of the empire self identified as "romans" and considered themselves 100% seperated from inhabitants of Rome and other italians, and generally any other nationality in the world.Even today many old people in Villages use the term "romhaioi" for themselves and mean Greek.
@Graham6762 Yes they invaded Europe, not invented,my bad....you are right about the Huns...they were fearless warriros, but Attila was beaten by the Roman Aetius,at 451 if i remember well, and he stopped the Huns invension.... anywhay history is a great!!
@Gneisenau In fact they DID score a miraculous victory against Attila in the Battle of Chalons, which helped preserve the west for about 25 more years......
Thanks for the documentary, it's stuff like this that makes me happy the internet exists. Autodidacticism for the win!
