AH, the song that spoke what my heart was saying way back when I was 16 & he was 26. I haven't heard it since then & brought back the love I felt. Wonderful times. I'm 54 now & have lived several lifetimes, but music from my youth stil runs thru my veins
Fond memories of Wheatridge HS in the middle '60s and life with my bride in the early '70s in Colorado. Judy Collins was a favorite back then, remains so today.
I stumbled onto this watching an old Smothers Brothers video. Wow! The tune alone is a complete gem I wish I had wrote. Her performance is an excellent marriage of performer to song. As a man this is my secret shame.
Brings back memories of seeing a girl in Massachusetts in the early 70's when I lived in NY and going to see her every weekend,, I wonder if she thought of me this way
Canadian Ian Tyson wrote this pearl. I grew up first hearing Judy sing it...have you ever heard American Suzy Bogguss sing this. Definitely the best rendition in my opinion!!!!! Thanx for this incredible post!!!!!!!!!
It's a sweet sweet song. It's always held a special place in my heart. Something about the sound / her voice. The beautiful romance of it. The record is the best way to hear it. Live is good but does not carry her voice as well.
There's a sweetly naive young woman who lives inside me and sings this song. I strive to keep that troublemaker knocked SMOOTH out. GREAT song! Thank you for posting.
This is not as crisp or sweet as the record-studio version but that is what makes live performances so interesting (I am presuming it IS live and she isn't miming). Every rendition is subtlely different. If we only wanted studio quality versions, no singer would ever give a live performance. I could listen to Judy Collins all day.
@MusicMadMaurice You are correct, anytime a tune is performed live, there is a difference in that rendition. As a musician this is something that just happens, it depends on the room , the audience, and the musicians. Listen to Kris Kristoffersons CD "THE AUSTIN SESSIONS".Bill Haley said the difference between him and many other recording artists was that he could perform his tunes live and so it is with Judy
oh man i was watching "junior bonner" on TMC and this song popped into my head. judy collins has the sweetest voice. this is a classic performance. thanks for sharing.
@jaguarxj61000 Also saw her do this at Ravinia A popular Chicago area venue, while i was playing in ;old town; the chicago equivalent of Haight Ashbury ( not sure of spelling.)Would like to get one of the local girl bands here in the phil. to do this.
Judy Collins was BIG with us "hippies" back in the 60s. You can't imagine it today, but her music was IMPORTANT to a lot of people. What a beautiful voice she has, and she picked some of the greatest songs of that time to sing. She did Leonard Cohen songs better than anyone else, for example.
We had some great music back then, and we knew enough to appreciate it at the time.
I can hardly believe that Sweet Judy Blue Eyes is now 72 years old (May 1939). I remember so well, just back from Vietnam in November 1970 and by June of 1971 I was sharing a terrific apartment with my bud, Mike, in Seal Beach, California and playing this 45 RPM single until the needle fell off my turntable. I was 24 then and Judy was 32 ~ I fear we have fallen victim to The Circle Game but this lady's voice was the sweetest thing I ever heard, back in the day.
@MrRonnieG It was 1969, and I was back from Vietnam. This song sounded like the soundtrack to what was taking place in my life back then. Trying to figure out just what the hell had happened and which way my life was going to go. Peace, brother.
I've got a vinyl version of this. It's glorious! My favourite Judy though, is Mr. Tambourine Man. It's that beautiful ringing tone in her voice that gets me every time. Melts my heart!
@gordbard I didn't know she did a version of Mr. Tambourine man. I love the song and looked it up and you are so right-just beautiful ! Thank you for the comment, otherwise I would have missed her version !
Beautifully said Mr. RonnieG.

The song was a favorite of my best friend Ray, who died tragically in a boating accident in 1987, while doing what he loved best: fishing.

She's so good, amazing tonal quality, breath support... Good soulful music like this doesn't know age, era, class, gender, race...so timeless.
