  • She is the best Carmen I've ever seen!!! BRAVO!!!

  • I can't beleive this, how the fuck wasn't she 1.000.000 times more famous?!?!?! and we have some other completely untalented Carmens that everyones pay or have paied attention to! WTF!!! LOVE HER VOICE!!!!

  • Wow! That slight but ever so dramatic change in her facial expression in the 1st 10 secs speaks volumes about her talent, independent of her magical voice. What a beauty! And does anyone notice her foot tapping at 0:09 s? Notice how the heel hits the ground right on the downbeats but rises with a sort of rubato haste, just ahead of the tempo of the orchestra. She's basically dancing a rubato and it's so appropriate! Such subtlety is the mark of a born musician! They feel music from head to toe.

  • Its amazing how comfortable she is lying down and sitting while singing the way she did! Wow! Going from Mezzo to Soprano was a verry wise choice!

  • Sexy as hell!

  • I found the Medea interesting for Callas 's performance but can't help wishing that if she had to be filmed why not her Norma, her Forza, or Trovatore, her Tosca, her Lucia all roles I would have much rather heard and seen her in on film than the rather archaic film of Medea and why not recorded live performances? The woman was an incredible presence on stage and fed off the energy of an audience. It is unfathomable that so little of her work was filmed and preserved.

  • BRAVA. absolutely stunning. And whoever said she doesn't look "gitana", please watch the film "Latcho Drom", from India to North Africa to Ireland to Spain, the Roma Diaspora is gloriously beautiful and diverse. One love.

  • Maria Callas has spoiled me... No Carmen sounds great after Callas. Good. But not great...

  • @Rhopoe I agree Callas was amazing as Carmen what a pity that she did not do the role on stage. What a shame she did not film Carmen instead of the Medea film. Callas could have sung Carmen late in her career and also Dalila and Santuzza and put away all the pyrotechnics of the coloratura, bel canto, days and concentrated on these Mezzo roles and been active and astounding. It's criminal that so little of her Operatic work was preserved on film.Thank God for recordings.

  • @intelegentable I don't regret Pasolini's "Medea" at all– wasn't Callas such a fine non-singing actress in it? But the "Carmen" movie would've been spectacular. (The idea was explored in a sloppy Zeffirelli movie, "Callas Forever") Let's face it, her powers waned by the '60's, but you're right, her tackling the mezzo- roles were still better than most soprano aria recordings, of this and that time.

  • @intelegentable Actually, I find that even in post-60's voice, her coloratura was still solid. The color of her voice was darker– the chest tones supreme!– but her high notes were often wobbly, cringe-worthy. If you wished she'd done "Carmen" on film, I wish she'd recorded Baroque– Handel would have loved her!– or Bizet's piano & voice, or Italian art songs... I hurt thinking about the many possibilities that would have been easy for Callas!

  • @intelegentable OK, I'll stop bugging you after this but, if you haven't checked out Callas's "Callas à Paris" double-album, YOU MUST! It is 1960's Callas-voice, but it showed no signs of slowing down whatsoever! In conclusion, we're agreed, Bumbry was good, cute, and well-suited as Carmen– but after hearing Callas in the role, we know how much better Bizet's opera, musically, could have been better. Callas just trumps all...

  • Magnificent in every way. She's stunning of face, form and voice.

  • If Karajan WAS conducting, that explains the deadly tempo. GOD. But it's nice to hear her singing well, I never heard her sing well even once.

  • @MuscleDaddyCMH ANYONE who states that they never heard Bumbry sing well is suspect in my book. Grace was one of the most impressive, important ,outstanding ,operatic ,voices and personaliies of the 60's 70's 80's. Even on into the 90's she did admirable work in recital and Concert. The woman was internationally famous and critically acclaimed for her Mezzo and later Sprano roles. maybe you diid not like her but she sang very well.

  • Wasn't Karajan conducting this? I could be wrong, but if this is his, I think it's great that he gave Bumbry the liberty to perform this quasi ad libidum. Great stuff, about as sexy as opera can get. :-)

  • She doesnt look much like a gitana, but who gives a damn... what a voice....

  • Bumbry did not see Carmen as a "a positive person"and did not perform the role very much except early in her career. A pity as she was great in the role. She and Vickers are terrific together. This is my favorite version of Carmen on film.

  • It's amazing how this is actually my Aunt Grace!!! :) I'm so honored!

  • THAT IS REAL CARMEN! One and only GRACE BUMBRY!

  • SHE'S VERY BEAUTIFUL AND HAS A GREAT VOICE.

  • Too slow!

  • I've loved her voice since I was a child and unfortunately had the opportunity to hear her live, which must be unforgettable. The record I played over and over was of de Falla songs. I haven't seen any of them on line yet.....does anyone have any to post???? please!!!!!!

  • damnit there is no "love" button...

  • Do you notice how much slower it was done here. Listen and compare the tempo to some of the other recordings.

    Beautifully done.

  • Trop belle!

  • completely amazing!

  • not bad, but the jose sucks. maria ewing still rules carmen!

  • If I hit it while she is old, will that be like a tribute to her previous sexiness?

  • She truly is a sorceress in this film. I watch her, and I fall into a trance at her beauty. Her voice stuns me and her lovely figure reflects the same. How can one watch this and not lose themselves to her?

  • She is sexy and has a great voice!

  • My favourite movie-opera from childhood! Grace is flawless as Carmen!

  • Oh she looks so sweet while singing!

  • God, she is so beautiful! She sings beautiful, but her smile is intoxicating!

  • I love these easy with which she sings this. Often mezzos sing this so heavily. The characterization is just so perfect and the voice as well. Brava.

  • Sexy , sultry and at times regal woman with beautiful voice.

  • Beautiful AND talented.

  • Sexy but elegant! It's Great! Thank you Grace Bumbry.

1964 in chicago!

  • A unique Carmen.Splendid.

  • @TravellerFellow Damn right she ain't- and thank god for that. She is a mezzo.!

  • I cannot hear another Carmen since I heard her :)

  • she fits her part perfectly! Her voice + the way she moves and looks is SO Carmen :)

    I love it!♥

  • I love Grace's wigs!!! Too bad her real hair is short!!!

  • The best Carmen interpretation, i think her voice is so soft and strong at the same time...

  • Pretty and vocally accomplished.... but rather more coquettish ingenue than impetuous seductress.

  • Whoa - Jon Vickers too!

  • My first opera was Bumbry in Carmen in SF in 1967... she was perfection... I was kinda disappointed years later to read her comments that "... Carmen is the same sickness for the Black Mezzo that Aida is for the Black soprano." Alas.

  • She is hot!

  • her voice is so carmen. She really delivers the role of carmen bcoz, aside from her voice, but to her sensuality.

  • O iubesc!

  • Her voice is just so wonderful in this role!

  • Lord have mercy she is wonderful and beautiful. I can't stop listening to her sing. *mesmerized* Thank you so much for upping.

  • O voce mare, lejera!! Interpretare superba! Intr`un cuvant MINUNAT!

  • someone knows where & when?

  • There's some great cosmic injustice in someone being so talented AND so beautiful. Harrumph.

This is awesome. I even like the tenor!

  • @suedeltica Funny, I love her as Carmen, but she is definitely not pretty to look at, she moves well, though.

  • @nichtsleezy A waste of a comment! Those who have no musical acumen make such ignorant observations.

  • @hfsaadiq Excuse me, but I am quite accomplished as an opera singer! And no, I do not find Ms. Bumbry the least bit attractive, but I did love her mezzo voice and I love how she committed to her roles!!! She is quite the artist with a great mezzo voice.

  • @nichtsleezy I'm sure that you perceive of yourself as a fine vocalist, and you might very well be. Nevertheless, your remark about someone's physical appearance cheapened your credibility, at least with me. Yes, inhabiting the role/stage in body as well as voice is important, but in the end, it is the craft that should be focused upon. What is 'pretty' and 'handsome' in art? Have any of your performances been uploaded to this venue? Are you anything to look at? Surely you are! We all are!

  • @hfsaadiq I understand now that you are in your alter ego state-the one that tries to be intelligent. I have deduced from your comments that you must be quite physically ugly.

  • @nichtsleezy Just as I thought. Good luck in your career.

  • Pardon my french ...But this is Fucking Awesome !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • ms. bumbry has a very powerful and beautiful voice. that's an understatement.

  • Bravo!!!!!!! Awesome

  • omg, she was so young, beautiful, charming, attractive!!

    such a great singer!

  • She was fine....

  • recipient of the Kennedy Honors this year - you can hear why! thanks

  • wow. she is amazing. i wish the kennedy honor thing would have lasted a bit longer. Springsteen got 1/2 hour and she only got about 12 mins but they do that every year to somebody

  • I love Springsteen, but the sheer talent of those who sing opera should have been offered at least one more piece. Ms. Bumbry's segment ended much too abruptly.

  • Totally agree. And furthermore the whole racial aspect of it really had me saying wow I'd love to hear more about this courageous, beautiful, amazing woman and singer. They do do that every year to one person but it never gets easier to watch one person get snubbed while another gets so much time. I thought maybe a girl's choir singing this little light of mine would have taken what? 4 mins more? ah well. I never heard of Grace Bumbry before tonight so it's a good thing for me she was on!!

  • I was sooo thinking the same thing!!! I was actually expecting them to give her the same time and recognition as the others. Needless to say, I was highly disappointed.....

  • @GrissomLovesSara It's all in line with classical Grammy awards being announced quickly but pop grammy winners getting the royal treatment - in the U.S. democracy classical artists are sidelined.

  • qqéé mezzo0oso0oprano0o dramattiiica!!!!!!!!!! =O geeneeaaL!!! =')

  • wow!

  • Simply gorgeous and also such a lovely woman to watch.

    Friedrich

It makes me happy to see what a good taste such a young man like you has!

  • SHE PLAYS THIS PART BRILLIANTLY

  • as if the world of opera is ever realistic. there are obese 45 years olds playing young ingenue's. it's all about the voice.

  • haha, but Mrs Bumbry is here in the movie still young and very slim. This is not Jessye Norman.

  • Actually the director was wrong in one thing : in that time, there were no black people (not meant to be a racist comment)

  • @isabellanova007 Actually, there were. Especially in southern Spain, where there was a significant Muslim influence from North Africa for quite some time, it wouldn't surprise me if some had managed to remain. Also, the opera was written in 1852, rather late for there *not* to be black people in Europe.

  • @isabellanova007 There were no black people? You mean we black people came into existence around 1900? I'm dying laughing over here.

  • CARMEN BUMBRY!

  • bravo !

  • Grace Bumbry was a terrific Carmen, right seductive! John Vickers was also very good. I dont know whether its a filmed performance or just a TV film. I first saw it in German TV in the second half of 60s.

  • She is one of the best singers.I love her voice!

  • What a gorgeous voice! Why don't I hear more about this singer. Lovely.

  • What a sensual body and powerfull voice together!!!

  • She is the best black-operatic singer I've ever seen

  • Love the Sabrina heels!

  • A sensual Carmen!

  • you judge a portrayal by what comes out on stage.......

  • Grace is one of the sexiest Carmens ever. LOL! I love it.

  • @musikenergy

    i agree completely

  • @musikenergy

    yeah, even better then Beyonce.

  • what amazes me is she hardly looks like she's opening her mouth very wide or taking huge breaths yet this grande sound emits form her!

    props to her =))

  • I dont think she's actually singing since this is from the movie. I could be wrong though.

  • This is an opera film and she is lip-synching herself.

  • yeah, that's why she doesn't have to open her mouth the way she would if she were actually singing. That's what I meant. I know sometimes they sing while acting, which visually makes more sense to me. but whatever, this was a really good version.

  • Many opera singers are really bad lip-synchers, but Grace Bumbry does a quite good job here :)

  • Not sure what your statement's purpose is, but the performance is lipsynched because this was recorded in a studio (obviously) and engineered to perfection as Karajan (the conductor) preferred.

The voices and performances are no less real.

  • It's an OPERA... People in OPERAS don't lypsynch... IGNORANT

  • Yes, beautiful voices (Bumbry and Vickers) and very good interpretation. But it remains very pity that Karajan shortened the last scene of the opera and used the music of l'Arlesienne Suite in this filmproduction, only to have a longer dancescene in it.....

  • This is a lovely rendition and yes, 4:22 is a big WOW. She has a great range and nice color of the voice.

  • wow - she was really beautiful

  • Exhausting performance.

  • One of her best roles

  • The tenor is the spectacular Jon Vickers!!!

  • As per usual!!

  • oh my goodness...Ms.Bumbry was absolutely wonderful...I Loveeee the color of her voice.

  • maravillosa Miss Bumbry lastima que no sea usted cubana.

  • Bumbry is so easy, like it's simpler than blinking. Her legs are spectacular. She's like the Tina Turner of opera, but her voice will out last her legs unlike Tina. -giggel-

    Apologies Ms. Turner.

  • Well, I don't know if it is right or wrong, but I enjoyed it.

  • Her voice is beautiful, but her pronunciation of this terrific French libretto is totaly wrong.

  • Terrible!

  • why are most of the people who listen to opera such snobs and so critical...better take some musical classes!

  • I am not gonna reply to such a low conduct from someone who pretends to listen to opera! Go back to your village, simple person, stop being pretentious!

  • I am kinda getting impatient with you - u look so much like a 15 yrs old, enough said...

  • Don't even bother with this chick. I looked at her profile and she picks fights on all the videos. She likes the attention since I'm sure she doesn't get any in real life.

  • That's the idea I got too, it's really a shame that a comment can't be noticed with respect, but well that speaks for some people. I wish her happy valentines, as I'm sure I don't want to be in the shoes with whoever she is with...

  • @operagodess78 Oh, my God!!! You appear not only to be from the low socio-economic structure of society, but you are also stupid, jealous and very angry!!! Why even bother to listen to such beautiful music? You will never add any beauty to this art!!! Go back to your simple and miserable existence!!

  • Spellbindingly beautiful! she takes musical pleasure to a diferent level.

  • They are both amazing. Grace is so wonderful, it's unexplainable.

  • she is so beautiful! i love to see it when a singer has the person they are singing with compelled and at their finger tips..lol..it was fun to watch! thanks!

  • Grace, I just want to take the time to wish you a Happy Birthday today. I hope that you can come to South Carolina and perform sometime.

  • Well, I don't know about you but... I certainly believe them and I believe in their singing!

  • The best Seguedille I have ever heard...an she is very very sexy

  • Incredible voice. Long live mezzo-sopranos! :D

  • you know what? They make a cute couple.

  • baltsa the best

  • I agree. But grace Bumbry's very good as well, and she's absolutely gorgeous!

  • yes, besides her voice and performance, in contrast to some other singers, she is pretty enough for this role and she also looks somewhat Spanish.

  • La più grande Carmen di sempre!

  • the best

  • E che acuto finale...!

  • she have a graet voice and she's acting carmen very well.

I saw her in a gala concert when she was old I didnt like her voice there but now that I hear her I know that she had a great voice and she sounds a light mezzo ...

  • She had one of the greatest mezzo voices ever! For me she's the best Eboli and Amneris!!! I love her!

  • Grace is absolutely wonderful in this role !!!! She is such a beautiful woman with a voice and artistry to match. Those cheekbones alone are to die for !!!!! She was compared a lot during her career with another fantastic singer, Shirley Verrett, but though they performed both the Soprano and Mezzo repertoire, they each possess special qualities and gifts that have garnered them great careers in their own right. Much applause to Grace on her fantastic Carmen !!!!

  • What a wonderful voice! So powerful, so beautiful!!! I'm ... astonished! Sublime!

  • Why having posted this beauty in te category "Humour"? :-)

Karajan's film is funny, that's true, with all these people around listening to the secrets deals between José and Carmen, and this terrific stereo amplification, but...

  • Grace is absolutely fantastic! Can you post her "Les tringles des sistres tintaient", please? - I'd like to hear her version of this!

  • Haha, I do have got it.But it is difficult to upload because of the awful network. But inspired by your enthusiasm, maybe I can have a try~~~

  • This is the ultimate Carmen - vocally perfect and absolutely seductive. A stunning performance!!! Only Jon Vockers as Don José or rather his voice appears too heavy and too prosaic for this role - I think that Nicolai Gedda was the best Don José, but Vickers is OK.

  • La Carmen più affascinante!

  • Grace is stunning here. OK, so the hair is a bit bouffant, but what a gorgeous woman with a gorgeous voice - and she comes up trumps by playing Carmen a little bit cool and playful, not as a sluttish maneater. She has Jose (and us) in the palm of her hand - even is she has her wrists tied!

  • ...cool and playful, not as a sluttish maneater. Mmm..I really agree with you`~~

  • Bumbry is in her prime here! Vickers sounds good, too.

  • My favorite carmen..
