I can't beleive this, how the fuck wasn't she 1.000.000 times more famous?!?!?! and we have some other completely untalented Carmens that everyones pay or have paied attention to! WTF!!! LOVE HER VOICE!!!!
Wow! That slight but ever so dramatic change in her facial expression in the 1st 10 secs speaks volumes about her talent, independent of her magical voice. What a beauty! And does anyone notice her foot tapping at 0:09 s? Notice how the heel hits the ground right on the downbeats but rises with a sort of rubato haste, just ahead of the tempo of the orchestra. She's basically dancing a rubato and it's so appropriate! Such subtlety is the mark of a born musician! They feel music from head to toe.
I found the Medea interesting for Callas 's performance but can't help wishing that if she had to be filmed why not her Norma, her Forza, or Trovatore, her Tosca, her Lucia all roles I would have much rather heard and seen her in on film than the rather archaic film of Medea and why not recorded live performances? The woman was an incredible presence on stage and fed off the energy of an audience. It is unfathomable that so little of her work was filmed and preserved.
BRAVA. absolutely stunning. And whoever said she doesn't look "gitana", please watch the film "Latcho Drom", from India to North Africa to Ireland to Spain, the Roma Diaspora is gloriously beautiful and diverse. One love.
@Rhopoe I agree Callas was amazing as Carmen what a pity that she did not do the role on stage. What a shame she did not film Carmen instead of the Medea film. Callas could have sung Carmen late in her career and also Dalila and Santuzza and put away all the pyrotechnics of the coloratura, bel canto, days and concentrated on these Mezzo roles and been active and astounding. It's criminal that so little of her Operatic work was preserved on film.Thank God for recordings.
@intelegentable I don't regret Pasolini's "Medea" at all– wasn't Callas such a fine non-singing actress in it? But the "Carmen" movie would've been spectacular. (The idea was explored in a sloppy Zeffirelli movie, "Callas Forever") Let's face it, her powers waned by the '60's, but you're right, her tackling the mezzo- roles were still better than most soprano aria recordings, of this and that time.
@intelegentable Actually, I find that even in post-60's voice, her coloratura was still solid. The color of her voice was darker– the chest tones supreme!– but her high notes were often wobbly, cringe-worthy. If you wished she'd done "Carmen" on film, I wish she'd recorded Baroque– Handel would have loved her!– or Bizet's piano & voice, or Italian art songs... I hurt thinking about the many possibilities that would have been easy for Callas!
@intelegentable OK, I'll stop bugging you after this but, if you haven't checked out Callas's "Callas à Paris" double-album, YOU MUST! It is 1960's Callas-voice, but it showed no signs of slowing down whatsoever! In conclusion, we're agreed, Bumbry was good, cute, and well-suited as Carmen– but after hearing Callas in the role, we know how much better Bizet's opera, musically, could have been better. Callas just trumps all...
@MuscleDaddyCMH ANYONE who states that they never heard Bumbry sing well is suspect in my book. Grace was one of the most impressive, important ,outstanding ,operatic ,voices and personaliies of the 60's 70's 80's. Even on into the 90's she did admirable work in recital and Concert. The woman was internationally famous and critically acclaimed for her Mezzo and later Sprano roles. maybe you diid not like her but she sang very well.
Wasn't Karajan conducting this? I could be wrong, but if this is his, I think it's great that he gave Bumbry the liberty to perform this quasi ad libidum. Great stuff, about as sexy as opera can get. :-)
Bumbry did not see Carmen as a "a positive person"and did not perform the role very much except early in her career. A pity as she was great in the role. She and Vickers are terrific together. This is my favorite version of Carmen on film.
I've loved her voice since I was a child and unfortunately had the opportunity to hear her live, which must be unforgettable. The record I played over and over was of de Falla songs. I haven't seen any of them on line yet.....does anyone have any to post???? please!!!!!!
She truly is a sorceress in this film. I watch her, and I fall into a trance at her beauty. Her voice stuns me and her lovely figure reflects the same. How can one watch this and not lose themselves to her?
My first opera was Bumbry in Carmen in SF in 1967... she was perfection... I was kinda disappointed years later to read her comments that "... Carmen is the same sickness for the Black Mezzo that Aida is for the Black soprano." Alas.
@hfsaadiq Excuse me, but I am quite accomplished as an opera singer! And no, I do not find Ms. Bumbry the least bit attractive, but I did love her mezzo voice and I love how she committed to her roles!!! She is quite the artist with a great mezzo voice.
@nichtsleezy I'm sure that you perceive of yourself as a fine vocalist, and you might very well be. Nevertheless, your remark about someone's physical appearance cheapened your credibility, at least with me. Yes, inhabiting the role/stage in body as well as voice is important, but in the end, it is the craft that should be focused upon. What is 'pretty' and 'handsome' in art? Have any of your performances been uploaded to this venue? Are you anything to look at? Surely you are! We all are!
@hfsaadiq I understand now that you are in your alter ego state-the one that tries to be intelligent. I have deduced from your comments that you must be quite physically ugly.
wow. she is amazing. i wish the kennedy honor thing would have lasted a bit longer. Springsteen got 1/2 hour and she only got about 12 mins but they do that every year to somebody
I love Springsteen, but the sheer talent of those who sing opera should have been offered at least one more piece. Ms. Bumbry's segment ended much too abruptly.
Totally agree. And furthermore the whole racial aspect of it really had me saying wow I'd love to hear more about this courageous, beautiful, amazing woman and singer. They do do that every year to one person but it never gets easier to watch one person get snubbed while another gets so much time. I thought maybe a girl's choir singing this little light of mine would have taken what? 4 mins more? ah well. I never heard of Grace Bumbry before tonight so it's a good thing for me she was on!!
I was sooo thinking the same thing!!! I was actually expecting them to give her the same time and recognition as the others. Needless to say, I was highly disappointed.....
@GrissomLovesSara It's all in line with classical Grammy awards being announced quickly but pop grammy winners getting the royal treatment - in the U.S. democracy classical artists are sidelined.
@isabellanova007 Actually, there were. Especially in southern Spain, where there was a significant Muslim influence from North Africa for quite some time, it wouldn't surprise me if some had managed to remain. Also, the opera was written in 1852, rather late for there *not* to be black people in Europe.
Grace Bumbry was a terrific Carmen, right seductive! John Vickers was also very good. I dont know whether its a filmed performance or just a TV film. I first saw it in German TV in the second half of 60s.

Bumbry is so easy, like it's simpler than blinking. Her legs are spectacular. She's like the Tina Turner of opera, but her voice will out last her legs unlike Tina. -giggel-
I am not gonna reply to such a low conduct from someone who pretends to listen to opera! Go back to your village, simple person, stop being pretentious!
Don't even bother with this chick. I looked at her profile and she picks fights on all the videos. She likes the attention since I'm sure she doesn't get any in real life.
That's the idea I got too, it's really a shame that a comment can't be noticed with respect, but well that speaks for some people. I wish her happy valentines, as I'm sure I don't want to be in the shoes with whoever she is with...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why are you looking at my profile. You said you don't bother but then I'm important enough for you to look through my stuff. Next time make sure your think before you write stupidities.
@operagodess78 Oh, my God!!! You appear not only to be from the low socio-economic structure of society, but you are also stupid, jealous and very angry!!! Why even bother to listen to such beautiful music? You will never add any beauty to this art!!! Go back to your simple and miserable existence!!
she is so beautiful! i love to see it when a singer has the person they are singing with compelled and at their finger tips..lol..it was fun to watch! thanks!
she have a graet voice and she's acting carmen very well.
I saw her in a gala concert when she was old I didnt like her voice there but now that I hear her I know that she had a great voice and she sounds a light mezzo ...
Grace is absolutely wonderful in this role !!!! She is such a beautiful woman with a voice and artistry to match. Those cheekbones alone are to die for !!!!! She was compared a lot during her career with another fantastic singer, Shirley Verrett, but though they performed both the Soprano and Mezzo repertoire, they each possess special qualities and gifts that have garnered them great careers in their own right. Much applause to Grace on her fantastic Carmen !!!!
Why having posted this beauty in te category "Humour"? :-)
Karajan's film is funny, that's true, with all these people around listening to the secrets deals between José and Carmen, and this terrific stereo amplification, but...
This is the ultimate Carmen - vocally perfect and absolutely seductive. A stunning performance!!! Only Jon Vockers as Don José or rather his voice appears too heavy and too prosaic for this role - I think that Nicolai Gedda was the best Don José, but Vickers is OK.
Grace is stunning here. OK, so the hair is a bit bouffant, but what a gorgeous woman with a gorgeous voice - and she comes up trumps by playing Carmen a little bit cool and playful, not as a sluttish maneater. She has Jose (and us) in the palm of her hand - even is she has her wrists tied!
She is the best Carmen I've ever seen!!! BRAVO!!!

Bumbry is so easy, like it's simpler than blinking. Her legs are spectacular. She's like the Tina Turner of opera, but her voice will out last her legs unlike Tina. -giggel-
Apologies Ms. Turner.

Her voice is beautiful, but her pronunciation of this terrific French libretto is totaly wrong.

Because I can be! So shut the fuck up.
And I don't understand why people act all whiny, when a singer is criticize. Dont' listen to music if you can't accept peoples' opinion. ASSHOLE!!

Why are you looking at my profile. You said you don't bother but then I'm important enough for you to look through my stuff. Next time make sure your think before you write stupidities.
operagodess78 3 years ago
@operagodess78 Oh, my God!!! You appear not only to be from the low socio-economic structure of society, but you are also stupid, jealous and very angry!!! Why even bother to listen to such beautiful music? You will never add any beauty to this art!!! Go back to your simple and miserable existence!!

yes, besides her voice and performance, in contrast to some other singers, she is pretty enough for this role and she also looks somewhat Spanish.

I saw her in a gala concert when she was old I didnt like her voice there but now that I hear her I know that she had a great voice and she sounds a light mezzo ...

She had one of the greatest mezzo voices ever! For me she's the best Eboli and Amneris!!! I love her!

Njamh 3 years ago

Karajan's film is funny, that's true, with all these people around listening to the secrets deals between José and Carmen, and this terrific stereo amplification, but...

This is the ultimate Carmen - vocally perfect and absolutely seductive. A stunning performance!!! Only Jon Vockers as Don José or rather his voice appears too heavy and too prosaic for this role - I think that Nicolai Gedda was the best Don José, but Vickers is OK.

La Carmen più affascinante!
