I love that you guys brought up the stupid track decorations in this game. You said, when you know what these tracks really look like, it pretty much ruins it to see carnival rides, big domes, and strange NFS paraphenalia. It actually turned me away from playing this, it reminded me that it's an arcade game. I think if you set the wheel right, the physics are good but as you say, the tire physics and steering aren't right. I'm really hoping shift 2 doesn't have all the stupid track decorations
This game is CRAP,all cars behaves like they were on ice, you are not steering the car but you are sliding with the back, even front wheel drive. I am so disappointed cause the graphics and courses are amazing.You should have the bumpcamera for best experience(not cam from the back).The car in the games behave so far away from a car in reality. It is a shame, like shift 1 i throw in the garbage. Just try forza 3, that is how a car behave, mix forza3 with nfs_shift2 graphics and courses.

In shift one of the things that sucks about it is when you go very fast everything gets blurry and you cant use the mirrors. I race cockpit for everything and it was kind of stupid :\ .
Personally I would think people that are serious racing simulator fans would choose to use a PC rather than a Console, PC has just so many more options, being able to use 3 monitors, for peripheral vision, the 3D Shutter glasses for Stereoscopic 3D, and the Headtracker, among other things.
just seems like a more suitable and advanced platform.
Also, third and final comment. An example of the Real Mod 2.0 i mentioned can be seen at the youtube video "dd8cYRYCYZY"

Using the mod it feels much more accurate. When you combine these improvements with already stunning graphics and environment, this can potentially be one of the greatest sims.

Thanx 4 the quick RE: My comment was more a remark on the plethora of things wrong with Forza (your high score that is justified under your rating system) whereas it should have recieved a high mark, but Forza 3 can not be compared to true (PC I guess "hardcore sims". Both NFSS and Forza need to satisfy the sim and arcade market for revenue. It is impossible to satisfy both within a game unless there is a huge gameplay scalability. Does the average player want to ajust camber to the milimeter?
As an arcade game (which is what Forza and NFSS are) Forza falls way short and as a sim as well. So... Well call it an above average sim/arcade game...which leaves both enthusiasts short. I am a flight sim racing sim and go way back with both but, (you did adress this) on inside"sim"racing (limited games to rate...unless this were the 80s and PC sims were still king)... (no I can not bring myself to wear racing booties in my own place.. that's a little too far) Forza 3 has the passion of driving someone's mom's station wagon around a corner. Sorry.. Physics come first to us and NFS Shift lacks compared to others in this category.. It is fun.. I have a blast racing it..Just like I do Dirt 2.. They're all great track day titles.. If I want a real sim, Im on iRacing, rFactor or Richard Burns Rally.

I think you gave a great review. Although I'm barely getting into sim racing, I'm currently welding my own first pod to mount the seat, wheel, and pedals.
Therefore, I've been playing Shift on PC with a 360 controller. It runs flawless at 1080p max everything on my current setup. Let's hope their next title excels.
Dirt 2's physics are just as good as NFS Shift or better in my opinion.. Shift's physics are pretty good..You can overdrive the cars too much and do un realistic things. Forza 3 or any of the serious PC sims set the benchmark that Shift hasn't hit in my opinion. Great/ fun game, but not a sim like iRacing.
Also.. not sure how you can judge the physics with a 360 gamepad. :-)
I actually follow you guys and agree with your opinions most of the time but, as far as your review of NFSS and Forza 3, you are way off. If its more track, shiny cars, better physics, car tuning and slightly better resolution then go with Forza but, what happened to game enjoyment, passion and immersion? Cockpits, presentation, GAMEPLAY, sound, sense of speed and FUN are what keeps me coming back in NFSS. Your pts weighting scale awards too many pts for less important categories.
I have one of the best steering wheel, a high end computer and all the recommended settings, but I still don't like the driving in any racing game available, they all feel so unrealistic. Take for example this game... just driving straight requires medium corrections and for someone who drove an Audio RS2 with 292KM/hour I know it's simply unrealistic.
i got shift for xmas, was abit disappointed.. i went to blockbuster and rented forza, i beleive i like forza better. graphics are better, but howeer more static.
Why did you give the car segment of the rating scale a 9/10 when this game has only a fraction of cars as Forza 3? i think it deserves like a 6 or maybe a 7. It could be just me though. That's the main reason for what LFS don't like to people, it is a simulator don't has arcade mode.
Your fun is do better laps, or race with other people and go to limit. If you don't test it never will like LFS. But if you like racing and try to go for a very good lap you will love LFS and hate rFactor and so....
RBR is fun, but not realistic, and less on asphalt
If you install the TechAde ffb update from RSC you get a big forcefeedback enhancement, surpassing current simtitles....
Second trip is to lower your steering lock ingame (NFS Shift only uses about 270 degrees rotation ingame) using a huge lock gives the weird steering...

I can NOT believe that this game gets high ratings and good reviews everywhere. Did EA send out some sort of spezial review-version? Because the version I've played has to be called Need for Spee: BUG and is some kind of beta-test-version. There are so many bugs in it, to fix them all it would need several patches. But since the next Need for Speed is already coming in 2010 EA will not put much effort in this game anymore. Thanks for nothing
What bugs? I finished the game and the only issue i noticed during th egameplay is a bit of grass on the track. No lag, no glitching, and it does not quit itself.
I remember first trying this on PC w/ Fanatec GT3 RS and I felt very disconnected from the road at times, and the car seemed easy to sway back and forth, almost uncontrollably at times (even when tryin' to go down a straight fast). I haven't had this problem in any of the other sims I've played. Do I need to tweak some settings? I'll give it another shot since I'm a little more experienced with sim racing now.
I can't say Shift is perfect. I hate the short races and the unskippable intros. But they did something right.
The sound in NFS Shift: it is amazing. It's far better than any other car game or simulator. It rocks everything in my room when I press down the accelerator.
That they simply ignored the sounds in Shift is a shame, it really indicates a very rushed review.

Actually I haven't driven any of those cars in NFS Shift and still am able to tell with ease which games are realistic or not, and how. If you've ever driven a real car and a go-kart, It's not that hard to be able to tell that most video games are arcadeish whereas most pc sims are, well, simulations.
GTR2 is excellent, much better than any video game out there in terms of driving realism. Despite it being what I call an 'entry-level'' sim, GTR2 is much better if u really want to drive realistically.
Have u tried Live For Speed or iRacing? These are probably the most realistic sims ever.

I know it isn't a sim, (It's as far into arcade as a game can go), but have you guys ever tried the Trackmania series? Trackmania Nations Forever is free on steam and if you like it there's a lot more car styles and track styles and such in Trackmania United Forever. It can be great fun.
Forgot to mention: Trackmania can be played with a keyboard or gamepad. I don't know how well a wheel works, but I doubt it's going to be useful at all for most of it.

But after I played Grand Prix Legends back in 2002 and then got my first steering wheel and pedals a year after, I simply can't imagine playing anything even slightly worse than most of Simbin's titles, which are kinda of a Simmer's entry level game make
I remember the first game too. I used to have it. It really was probably the best way to go. But then soon after they started going "Cartoonish" and it all went wrong. Now with shifter they might be coming back to the original in terms of physics realism and graphics, although I doubt it really. It's probably just eye-candy and no more realism, not even usual arcade racers like it as much as they're "supposed to".
Yeah, it went like the right way with "Porsche" with all the features etc.
Except not long after that the tuner-hype came...
I actually do think they'll go quite realistic with "Shift" and its successors.
Because now they deliberately split the franchise into two branches because of the divided fans.
Except, like the more serious fans, they don't like it's become pro-racing (tracks etc.) and, while I'm open to stuff, for "NFS" specifically I do agree.
And it looks like they're having a proper reboot of the franchise.
However, to me, that still doesn't justify how they ruined the original concept (non-urban streetracing with exotics mainly) and went with the arcade tuner-hype and now since a couple of games and more and more into track-racing.
In most cases copying other games.
This isn't 'Need For Speed' as it was anymore, the actual 'Need For Speed' is dead.
As per the performance problems in Shift I didn't have any, but I heard it's got horrible ATI optimization. I was able to run in fine without a hitch at my native with with 8xAA though, granted I have a pretty new graphics card.
Yeah they didn't bother to optimize it for ATI, and one would suspect it's because they got a paycheque from NVidia as they seem to have sponsored it.
I just bought the p.c. version yesterday. Still can't play it though. It won't recognize my Logitech G25 wheel (even though they say it supports it). Also, I've found that their is no way to exit the game once your race starts, hitting esc. takes you too the menu, but the 'Quit' option is gone. Ctrl Alt + Del doesn't work here either. The only way out is to do a cold boot of your computer (shut it off without shutting it down). In short, $50.00 totally wasted!
The controllers in the game are preset. In options / controls you have to slide through the Preset menu. Logitech G25 is preset number 6. I also recomend that you download realmod 2.0 or 2.6, it makes the game a lot better. I hope I could help you, tough I have no sollution for the quit problem.
I've only played the demo for NFS Shift, but there's a reason for it. I spent a solid hour just messing with the wheel settings and i never could get it to feel right. After that, i found the physics to be really bland. Nothing about it just felt right. The demo is supposed to convince me to buy it, but it did just the opposite. It convinced me that i still don't need a NFS game.
Last three minutes are a blast.. NFS shift could be great but I agree there is something wrong with the physics feel and doesnt work well at all with ATI cards. Check NFS forum at EA also at nogripracing for the FFB settings.
Not a bad game, but the input laaaaaaaag is almost killing it. The faster cars are very hard to control.

Also, i highly recommend you guys review this game on the PC using the Real Mod 2.0 created by Dario Morelli. It includes but not limited to:
- New tire models rewritten for all cars with three separate "slip curves."
- New AI model, more competitive, less aggressive, and make fewer mistakes.
- New Chassis model, all data from the chassis of all the cars are now correct.
- New Cockpit Cam, now it's like a real "on-board camera"
- New Track Surfaces, all surfaces are now correct.

I have one of the best steering wheel, a high end computer and all the recommended settings, but I still don't like the driving in any racing game available, they all feel so unrealistic. Take for example this game... just driving straight requires medium corrections and for someone who drove an Audio RS2 with 292KM/hour I know it's simply unrealistic.

Why did you give the car segment of the rating scale a 9/10 when this game has only a fraction of cars as Forza 3? i think it deserves like a 6 or maybe a 7. It could be just me though. Not trying to go against what you guys are saying i just thought id give my opinion. Great show by the way. Excited to see the review on GT5.

That's the main reason for what LFS don't like to people, it is a simulator don't has arcade mode.
Your fun is do better laps, or race with other people and go to limit. If you don't test it never will like LFS. But if you like racing and try to go for a very good lap you will love LFS and hate rFactor and so....
RBR is fun, but not realistic, and less on asphalt

If you install the TechAde ffb update from RSC you get a big forcefeedback enhancement, surpassing current simtitles....
Second trip is to lower your steering lock ingame (NFS Shift only uses about 270 degrees rotation ingame) using a huge lock gives the weird steering...

I can NOT believe that this game gets high ratings and good reviews everywhere. Did EA send out some sort of spezial review-version? Because the version I've played has to be called Need for Spee: BUG and is some kind of beta-test-version. There are so many bugs in it, to fix them all it would need several patches. But since the next Need for Speed is already coming in 2010 EA will not put much effort in this game anymore. Thanks for nothing

What bugs? I finished the game and the only issue i noticed during th egameplay is a bit of grass on the track. No lag, no glitching, and it does not quit itself.

I remember first trying this on PC w/ Fanatec GT3 RS and I felt very disconnected from the road at times, and the car seemed easy to sway back and forth, almost uncontrollably at times (even when tryin' to go down a straight fast). I haven't had this problem in any of the other sims I've played. Do I need to tweak some settings? I'll give it another shot since I'm a little more experienced with sim racing now.

I can't say Shift is perfect. I hate the short races and the unskippable intros. But they did something right.
The sound in NFS Shift: it is amazing. It's far better than any other car game or simulator. It rocks everything in my room when I press down the accelerator.
That they simply ignored the sounds in Shift is a shame, it really indicates a very rushed review.
You do need a sub-woofer to appreciate it.

Actually I haven't driven any of those cars in NFS Shift and still am able to tell with ease which games are realistic or not, and how. If you've ever driven a real car and a go-kart, It's not that hard to be able to tell that most video games are arcadeish whereas most pc sims are, well, simulations.

GTR2 team concentrated their efforts exactly where it counts - on the driving itself.
Need for Speed shift has EXCELLENT GRAPHICS but VERY LOW driving quality.
That's why GTR2 is 10 times better in my opinion.
Note: I have both GTR2 & Need for Speed Shift.

GTR2 is excellent, much better than any video game out there in terms of driving realism. Despite it being what I call an 'entry-level'' sim, GTR2 is much better if u really want to drive realistically.
Have u tried Live For Speed or iRacing? These are probably the most realistic sims ever.

I know it isn't a sim, (It's as far into arcade as a game can go), but have you guys ever tried the Trackmania series? Trackmania Nations Forever is free on steam and if you like it there's a lot more car styles and track styles and such in Trackmania United Forever. It can be great fun.

Lol, I really can't figure out which title that is. If it started with NFS........ though, I'd be able to tell right away, lol. I guess if I were in a buddy's house and he had a video game and also an NFS title, I'd play it against him, no prob. But after I played Grand Prix Legends back in 2002 and then got my first steering wheel and pedals a year after, I simply can't imagine playing anything even slightly worse than most of Simbin's titles, which are kinda of a Simmer's entry level game make

Too bad it went with the hype as I mentioned before, only luckily not as bad as something like Burnout.
I also loved to play F1-games and such and play it as realistic as possible.
But that was years ago, and today I just don't have the extra money for a good system and controller-set. -_-

I remember the first game too. I used to have it. It really was probably the best way to go. But then soon after they started going "Cartoonish" and it all went wrong. Now with shifter they might be coming back to the original in terms of physics realism and graphics, although I doubt it really. It's probably just eye-candy and no more realism, not even usual arcade racers like it as much as they're "supposed to".

Except not long after that the tuner-hype came...
I actually do think they'll go quite realistic with "Shift" and its successors.
Because now they deliberately split the franchise into two branches because of the divided fans.
Except, like the more serious fans, they don't like it's become pro-racing (tracks etc.) and, while I'm open to stuff, for "NFS" specifically I do agree.
They should've made realistic streetracing.

"Shift" looks beautiful.
And it looks like they're having a proper reboot of the franchise.
However, to me, that still doesn't justify how they ruined the original concept (non-urban streetracing with exotics mainly) and went with the arcade tuner-hype and now since a couple of games and more and more into track-racing.
In most cases copying other games.
This isn't 'Need For Speed' as it was anymore, the actual 'Need For Speed' is dead.
Now it's only a brand...

As per the performance problems in Shift I didn't have any, but I heard it's got horrible ATI optimization. I was able to run in fine without a hitch at my native with with 8xAA though, granted I have a pretty new graphics card.

Yeah they didn't bother to optimize it for ATI, and one would suspect it's because they got a paycheque from NVidia as they seem to have sponsored it.

I just bought the p.c. version yesterday. Still can't play it though. It won't recognize my Logitech G25 wheel (even though they say it supports it). Also, I've found that their is no way to exit the game once your race starts, hitting esc. takes you too the menu, but the 'Quit' option is gone. Ctrl Alt + Del doesn't work here either. The only way out is to do a cold boot of your computer (shut it off without shutting it down). In short, $50.00 totally wasted!

The controllers in the game are preset. In options / controls you have to slide through the Preset menu. Logitech G25 is preset number 6. I also recomend that you download realmod 2.0 or 2.6, it makes the game a lot better. I hope I could help you, tough I have no sollution for the quit problem.

I've only played the demo for NFS Shift, but there's a reason for it. I spent a solid hour just messing with the wheel settings and i never could get it to feel right. After that, i found the physics to be really bland. Nothing about it just felt right. The demo is supposed to convince me to buy it, but it did just the opposite. It convinced me that i still don't need a NFS game.

Last three minutes are a blast.. NFS shift could be great but I agree there is something wrong with the physics feel and doesnt work well at all with ATI cards. Check NFS forum at EA also at nogripracing for the FFB settings.

AFAIK, the tire model in Shift is more detailed and realistic than the one in GTR2.
However the AI is totally crazy and there's no qualy, you will be hit a lot by the AI drivers.
So the label: "entry level sim" seems totally accurate.
I'm installing the mod that makes races 10 laps instead of 2, to see how it improves the game.
